This is an obituary for Roy R. Pate, who was a member of the Pate DNA Project. BEARDSTOWN - Roy R. Pate, 78, of Beardstown died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born Dec. 14, 1931, in Moro, the son of Lawrence E. and Bertha Dale Pate. He married Mary Lou Birdsell on Feb. 11, 1950, in Cass County, Ill. Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Pate of Beardstown; one daughter, Carol Shilling of Canton; two sons, Roy Abby (wife, Dixie) Pate of Creve Coeur and David (wife, Kathy) of Beardstown; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Joe; and his sister, Marie Mayes. Roy enjoyed building things with his hands and was employed as a carpenter for Carpenters Local Union 904 in Jacksonville. He attended Beardstown Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed hunting with his sons and was especially fond of hunting for mushrooms in the spring. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at Beardstown Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday at Beardstown Church of the Nazarene.
