    1. [PATE] Joseph S. Pate, Sr. at Find-a-Grave

    3. Hi, Joel and all Pate family genealogists, Because he is my ancestor, I would like to add a listing for Joseph S. Pate, Sr. (1815-1868) at the Find-a-Grave site (http://www.findagrave.com). I have a bunch of graves at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=mr <http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=mr&GRid=17213186&MRid=1919911 8> &GRid=17213186&MRid=19199118&. Before I add a listing for Joseph, however, I have some questions of the group. >Would it be better if one of you (a descendent of his second wife), rather than I (a descendent of his first wife), established the site? >Is the draft of what I have below accurate? >What other information should be added to the draft? Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr. was born about 1815 in the Bulloch County area of Georgia. On June 7, 1838 in Twiggs County, Georgia, he married his first wife Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs (buried at Liberty Chapel Cemetery in Bryan County, Georgia). They had two children: Edna Josephine Pate Downs and William James Pate. When the couple separated, and Joseph went on to remarry and leave the state, children in the family were told the lie that while delivering the mail between Savannah and Louisville, Georgia he and his horse disappeared in Shivers Swamp, never to be seen again. In fact on August 17, 1846 in Early County, Georgia, Joseph married Mary Jane Carraway (buried somewhere in Texas), and they had seven children: Martha A. Pate Derrick and William Jackson Pate, both born in Georgia; Charles Thomas Pate, born in Mississippi; and Rebecca Martha Pate Bass, Joseph Samuel Pate, Jr., James Benton Pate, and Nancy A. Pate Goen, all born in Texas. Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr. died in 1868 in Tyler County, Texas and is probably buried in an unmarked grave in either Campground Cemetery or Magnolia Cemetery in Tyler County, Texas. 3. Sharlotte, I am very much interested in how you know Joseph Pate was born in Bulloch Co Ga. This would really help in the search for Samuel Pate's 1st wife. I have not tracked them back into Bulloch Co, but have not looked in that direction. As you know, Samuel Pate supposedly 1st married to a Weathersby which may or may not be true. I know that the Samuel Pate who is said to be Joseph's father acquired land in Twiggs Co GA between 12 Nov 1808 and the 1818 Twiggs Co GA tax digest. The first land I have proof of him owning (75 acres of #46, 27th dist) was drawn by James Moore of Cockran's Battn, Jackson Co GA in the 1807 land lottery and granted to him (Moore) 12 Nov 1808. THE FOLLOWING IS OF INTEREST, BUT NOT A PROVEN CONNECTION TO SAMUEL PATE OF TWIGGS. In 1810, a Stephen & Mary Weathersby are in Twiggs Co GA, becoming members of Stone Creek Baptist Church. In 1812 a Judy Weathersby joins the church & in 1814 a Cathy Weathersby joins the church. This Weathersby (Weathersbee) family moved to GA from Barnwell Co SC after the 1800 census. Before that they are supposed to be from Martin Co NC (not my research). By 1830 census, Stephen Wethersby is in Houston Co GA and in 1831 or 1832 buys land in Randolph Co GA. He is on the 1840 census, Randolph Co GA age 60-70. He is old enough to have been the father of Samuel Pate's 1st wife, but this is not proven and is just a possibility. Stephen Wethersby dies in Randolph Co Ga before the 1850 census. More research needs to be done in Randolph Co GA for estate records, etc for Stephen Wethersby family. If Joseph Pate was born in Bulloch Co that changes the search strategy. My Stephen S Pate b 1823 Twiggs Co GA (said to be brother to your Joseph Pate) married Margaret McKinnon in 1846 in Randolph Co GA. They lived in Stewart Co GA 1850 and then settled in Randolph Co GA.
