Wow, Joel, thanks for so much info! Sharlotte Where might I find a record of a man named William Pate Downs? William James Pate, the son of Mary Amelia Murrow Pate, born 1842 in Twiggs Co, GA died 1886 in Byran Co, GA. This William James Pate was enumerated, along with his sister Edna Josephine Pate, in the 1850 census of Effingham Co, GA in the household of John Murrow, his maternal grandfather. He was listed as William Pate age 8. In 1860 William James Pate was enumerated in Bryan Co., GA as William Pate age 17 in the household of J B Downs, probably Isaiah B Downs husband of Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs. In 1860 the sister of William James Pate, Edna Josephine Pate, was also enumerated in Byran Co., GA with her husband, Emmett Downs, brother of Isaiah B Downs. I have found no trace of William James Pate in the 1870 census of Georgia. There is a 10 Jun 1866 marriage license record in Bryan Co, GA for a William J Pate and an Ann Francis Lanier. I have found nothing further on this couple. There is a 24 Sep 1874 marriage license record in Bryan, Co, GA. for a William Pate and Susannah P Worley. In 1880 William James Pate was enumerated in Bryan Co, GA as William J Pate age 38, head of household. Others in the household were Susan Pate, wife age 36; Raymond Pate, son age 4; William Pate, son age 3; Susan Pate, daughter age 2; and Roberta Pate, daughter age 2m (DOB recorded as Sep 1879. Raymond Pate in this census record is Raymond Colon Pate Sr., 11 Dec 1876-20 Jan 1956 (Chatham Co, GA).Roberta Pate here is Roberta Ruth Pate b Sep 1879. In my OPINION William James Pate 1842-1886 did not use the Downs surname. Perhaps someone incorrectly attributed that surname to him at one time or another. Here is the census record profile for Raymond Colon Pate Sr , 11 Dec 1876-20 Jan 1956 CENSUS 1880 Bryan Co, GA - Page 409 ED 6, sheet 11, Dist 19, site 80/83 w/ Parents 1900 Bryan Co, GA - ED 3, sheet 9, GMD 1137, site 123/147 1910 Chatham Co, GA - ED 48, sheet 8B, Savannah, site 140/237 1920 Chatham Co, GA - ED 97, sheet 1A In 1918 he registered for the draft in Chatham Co, GA - abstract of card-- WWI Draft Registration, Chatham co, GA - 12 Sep 1918 Name: Raymond Colon Pate County: Chatham State: Georgia Birth Date: 11 Dec 1876 Race: White Reside: 68 Route B, Ogeechee, Chatham Co, GA Occupation: Farmer Employer: Self Next of Kin: Laura Pate (relationship not specified - presumably wife Residence of Relative: 70 Route B, Ogeechee, Chatham Co, GA Height: Tall Build: Stout Eyes: Gray Hair: Brown/gray Disability: None Raymond Colon Pate Sr 1876-1938 had at least one son, Raymond Colon Pate Jr 14 Oct 1902 Chatham Co, GA d 9 Mar 1972, Volusia Co, FL. I have not been able to research this family further, but if there is a Pate male descendant, it would be interesting and informative to have him participate in the Pate DNA Project Sharlotte, you had asked, in an earlier e-mail, what DNA analysis had shown about the family of Samuel Pate, supposed son of Rev William Pate. I suggest you search the archives of the Pate List Serve - Start with -http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/pate/2009-09/1251812157 I join Lindy Hard in her position on Joseph S Pate 1815-1868. I am not convinced that the Samuel Pate who married Mary Amelia Murrow and the Samuel Pate who married Mary Jane Carraway are the same man!
