First, I want to mention that I am very gratified by the almost immediate response I have received from a number of persons from our Pate family wishing to contribute. Their generosity and interest are greatly appreciated. I have received assurance for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources that the Gloucester Hall marker will be installed before the planned dedication on Friday, October 26. This day will be the 336th anniversary of the death of Nathaniel Bacon at Gloucester Hall. So, we are now able to start finalizing plans for the dedication and unveiling ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 1:00 PM. The location will be at the northwest corner of the intersection of the George Washington Memorial Highway (Hwy. 17) and Woods Crossroad (State Route 610), less than ten miles north of the town of Gloucester on Hwy. 17. My great hope is that it will be a memorable occasion for all who will be able to attend. There will be three presentations by our speakers -- Dr. Warren Billings, David Brown and Thane Harpole, and me. We are very fortunate and honored to have Dr. Billings, the pre-eminent scholar on colonial Virginia, to be one of our speakers. If it was not for his scholarly books on Royal Governor Howard, the marker would have never existed (at least through my efforts). It was in his books that I first learned the name of the grand house on the Pate plantation and the extent to which it was the first Virginia residence for Gov. Howard and his family. You can read Dr. Billings very impressive CV at this link: http://history.uno.edu/faculty/documents/up-to-date%20cv.pdf David Brown and Thane Harpole are co-directors of The Fairfield Foundation. They are excellent historians and skilled archaeologists. It was their enthusiastic response to my initial contact in trying to locate Gloucester Hall that spurred my drive to provide an historical marker for it. They have provided invaluable advice and support throughout this process. Just last night, my wife, Martha, located a video on Youtube titled “Gloucester County, Virginia: Encounters in History”, funded by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Near the start, David Brown makes his first appearance as a commentator and then a number of times throughout the video. The video is very interesting and provides a nice historical context for our marker. You can find the video at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaIOmVxYQi4 The three presentations should be very informative and interesting. I will open with background on the Pate men who owned the Pate plantation and with as much information as is known about Gloucester Hall. David and Thane will place Gloucester Hall within an historical context of Gloucester County and other archealogical sites. Dr. Billings will discuss the fascinating story of the two very dissimilar men, Nathaniel Bacon and Gov. Howard, whose paths crossed so improbably at Gloucester Hall, wher they both faced death, Bacon’s own and Howard’s wife. The following day, Saturday, October 27, the 3rd Annual Gloucester History Crawl, sponsored by the Fairfield Foundation, will begin the day’s activities at 11:30 AM and continue to 5:00 PM. I encourage all who will attend the dedication to also attend this event organized by David Brown and Thane Harpole. Here is the link: http://www.fairfieldfoundation.org/archives/689 I also hope that the Pate attendees will be able to gather for a meeting that Friday evening, and perhaps the following Saturday evening. A good opportunity to meet and visit. While in the area, attendees may want to visit other Pate-related sites. There is the Cole Digges House in Yorktown, formerly known as the Thomas Pate House (which I still believe it to be). Then, on the same parcel of land is Grace Episcopal Church, the original York Parish church, where there is a memorial marker for Col. Thomas Pate in its historical cemetery, placed there by the Pate Genealogical Convocation in 2008. You may also wish to view the art of Ebb Pate, one of our own, whose work is shown in The Gallery on Merchants Square in Williamsburg and in The Yorktown Shoppe. If you have been wanting an excellent painting or prints of colonial Yorktown and Williamsburg, this is a great opportunity. He has produced several with the Thomas Pate House in the scene. Ebb is planning to attend the dedication, so we can all meet him there, and maybe purchase from him a great souvenir of this grand weekend. If you plan to attend the dedication, please send an email to my personal email address, a12j02@sbcglobal.net , and inform me of the names of all persons who will be with you, your home city and state, and your cell phone number. I will prepare a list of attendees and send it to each person who will be there. I was informed that the hot links in my earlier message were not working. Perhaps the ones is this message will not work either. In both cases, you can be copy the links and paste them into the Internet address bar or into Google, and either will take you to the websites. If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope to see many of you there at the dedication. A. J. Pate

Group, I apologize for this e-mail being sent to the Pate website. Too many irons in the fire today and I was careless with what I thought was my reply directly to A.J. Politics and personal replies have no place on this website. My apologies to all. Will be glad when this election season is over. Amazing how many "donation" lists one can get on without trying. :) We have donated more to this election than we have in probably the last 4-5 campaigns combined but never before has it been so important to get Romney and other Republicans into the White House, Senate and House of Reps. Not to forget the governors. Probably the most important election in our lifetime. Take care and enjoy this wonderful weather. Nita -----Original Message----- From: A. The marker will be shipped from the foundry to the Virginia Department of Transportation on October 5 and will be installed prior to October 26, the planned date for the dedication. I received the invoice for the marker on Saturday from Sewah Studios, the foundry producing the marker. The invoice was for $1,350, and my payment was mailed yesterday. As sponsor of the marker, I was responsible for the cost. Virginia stopped paying the cost of markers in 1976. You can learn more about the program at this link: http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/hiway_markers/hwmarker_article.htm This marker will be a great heritage for the Pate family. Despite its prominent role in the early history of Gloucester County (and even colonial Virginia), today no trace of the Pate name exists anywhere in the county. This family has been forgotten. But the day this marker is unveiled, the Pate name will be restored to the land which once belonged to these Pate men and so proudly bore their name. For all who wish to have a part in preserving our family heritage and marking the land, I will appreciate any contributions which you may wish to give, any amount from $5 to $100. All who give will be able to take pride in making possible this permanent memorial to the illustrious men who brought great honor to our family name in the formative years of our nation. Any funds received in excess of the cost of the marker will be contributed to the Pate DNA Project Fund. If contributions fail to cover the cost, then the shortfall will be my responsibility since I had committed to underwriting the total cost. After all contributions have been received, I will provide all contributors with a complete listing of the contributions and any surplus funds donated to the Project. If you wish to be a part of this memorial, please send me an email at a12j02@sbcglobal.net , and I will provide my mailing address where you can send your contribution. I know that unfortunately some of you may never see this marker, and the only time I will likely ever see it is the day it will be unveiled. But maybe someday our children and grandchildren will have the opportunity to see their family name being honored. Whatever may be the case, I believe we all can take great pride in just knowing that the marker will always be there. You can view a mockup of the marker at this link: http://www.markerhistory.com/gloucester-hall-na-10/ After it has been installed, a photo of the actual marker on location will be posted at this same website. I am certain that photos will be taken at the ceremony and made available to anyone interested. Everyone is invited to attend the dedication and unveiling ceremony.
