Reverend Aubrey Pate (January 3, 1920 - October 13, 2012) Services for Reverend Aubrey Pate, 92, of Gladewater, will be held on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at 10 A.M. at First Baptist Church with Reverend Bailey Harris, Reverend Ken Brumley, and Bill High officiating. Burial will be in East Mountain Cemetery with Reverend Roy Taylor officiating. L. Aubrey Pate was born on January 3, 1920, near Center, Texas, the youngest of thirteen children of John Daniel Pate, a Baptist preacher, and Modenia Peace Pate. He grew up on the family farm. At thirteen, he worked on a ranch with four of his older brothers. At the beginning of World War II, they built barracks for English airmen training in Texas. Before the Pearl Harbor attack, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. After aircraft mechanic school, he was stationed in the Panama Canal zone on patrol for enemy submarines. While on furlough in Louisiana, S/Sgt. Pate met Norma Spinks. In 1941, they were married at Thomasville Georgia, Air Base. He was assigned to the 53rd Fighter Bomber Group. That year he received word that his brother, Elvie, an infantry sergeant, had been killed in battle in France. Later their son, Michael was born while stationed in Georgia. After Aubrey’s discharge, he worked for a while as a surveyor for Sohio Oil in Kaplan, Louisiana. They farmed and raised cattle near Ringgold, Louisiana. He also worked in construction with a brother and a nephew. Their daughter, Marla, was born in 1952. Ordained to the ministry by Bistineau Baptist Church in Heflin, Louisiana, Aubrey was called as pastor in Clarence, Louisiana, in 1955. The church, a former army chapel, was remodeled. Until a pastor’s home was built in 1957, the family lived in a former schoolhouse. God gave them two fruitful years in Clarence. They moved to Trees, Louisiana, in 1957, where he was elected to the State Executive Board. While at Trees, Aubrey earned a BS degree from East Texas Baptist College in Marshall, Texas, in 1961 and the MRE at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth in 1965. Aubrey moved his family to East Texas in 1965 to serve as pastor of East Mountain Baptist Church, where they ministered for nineteen years. Active in the Gregg Baptist Association, he served as moderator for a term and participated in the Encounter California Crusade. Both the pastor and church were actively involved in the Rio Grande River ministry for seven years. They also built churches in Ohio over the course of several years. In 1980, the congregation voted to build a new home. By the time Brother Pate retired in 1984, their new church building had been completed with no debt. Brother and Mrs. Pate joined First Baptist Church in Gladewater in 1985. He was called as minister to the Sr. Adults in 1989. They worked as a team in this ministry for seventeen years. Cooperating with GAP Project Missions in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, FBC completed a children’s home, a medical clinic, and a dental clinic. Brother Billy Ray Parmer, GAP director, and Brother Pate were devoted friends and worked closely together until Brother Parmer’s death. Brother Pate never tired of doing missions in Mexico. He was a craftsman with wood. He and his daughter, Marla, built a large bookcase and a china cabinet. He and his son-in-law, Bobby, completed several remodeling projects together. He preached many weddings and funerals during the years of his ministry. He loved his family and friends. He enjoyed good preaching, senior saints, old hymns, picking his banjo with other pickers, hunting, riding horses, plowing his mule, and picking and shelling peas. He lived a long and productive life, sustained by God’s grace. He is survived by Norma, his wife of 68 years; son, Michael Pate of North San Juan, California; a daughter, Marla Stewart and her husband, Bobby, of East Mountain; daughter-in-law, Pratiti Beldner of San Francisco, California; grandsons, David Blackard of Louisville, Kentucky; Frank Pate and wife Grace of Gladewater; Josh Stewart of East Mountain; Moon Pate of San Francisco, California; granddaughter, Joy Pate of North San Juan, California; great-grandchildren, Sami Rose and Jeremy Stewart; sister-in-law, Helen Pate of Ringgold, Louisiana; and several nieces and nephews. If so desired, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Retire the Debt, P.O. Box 1444, Gladewater, Texas 75647. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. on Monday, October 15, 2012, at Croley Funeral Home in Gladewater. NOTE: I will list his siblings at a later time. Right now I'm having a hard time logging onto my ancestry.com account, so I can't access my tree. There are two distinct Pate families from the Ringgold, Louisiana area. We have not been able to determine a connection. This man's family lived north of town; most of his family went to Bistineau Baptist Church. I refer to them as the Bistineau Pates whereas my branch of Pates lives south of town and went to Pleasant Grove Church, so I refer to us as the Pleasant Grove Pates. I'd love to be able to connect the two Pate groups.

Feild Pogue 1929-2012 Our sweet Dad passed peacefully at home Oct. 2, 2012. Born June 9, 1929 at his family home to Robert Herman and Edna Pogue in Burnet, Texas. Eight years later his beloved sister, Charlotte joined them. Pud, as his family fondly called him graduated from Burnet High School. After High School he and his best friend, Thomas Hullum, attended Barber School then set up shop in their hometown where to this day Thomas is the only Barber in town! Never forgetting his Texas roots, he and his small family moved to Boise in 1955. He worked several years for Harris Bros. Lumber Co. and later worked and retired from Brian C. Rambo Crushing Co. where he was foreman for many years. During the 1960's Dad was a hard working man and a courageous father raising three children on his own. He became a wonderful cook and was well known for his Pineapple Upside Down Cake! Dad married Evelyn Holcomb and in 1986 they bought the Haven Lodge in Lowman, Idaho with Dale and Karen Holcomb. They all fell in love with the community and were very successful until the forest fire of 1989 which devastated the Lodge and their home. Dad loved to hunt and fish. One of his favorite "fishing holes" was Deadwood Reservoir. Many Septembers were spent at Deadwood catching Kokanee. Years after the fire Dad was able to return to his "heaven on earth", purchasing a cabin on the Payette River in Lowman, where he retired to enjoy the great outdoors with many friends. He is survived by wife Evelyn, sister Charlotte Pate, sons Ken (Cheryl), Bob (Rebecca) and daughter Kathy Geach (Joseph), stepson Dale, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Our Dad was a man of few words but a friend to many. Although he didn't say alot you always knew he felt deeply. You could see a twinkle in his eyes. His quiet demeanor and love will be immensely missed. In respect to his wishes, there will be no service. State Historical Highway Marker “Gloucester Hall” To Be Dedicated —Marker commemorates the plantation where Gloucester Hall once stood, the first Virginia residence of Royal Governor Francis Howard, and where Nathaniel Bacon died in 1676 — —The marker’s text is reproduced below— RICHMOND – A state historical marker issued by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to commemorate the now-vanished 17th-century manor house Gloucester Hall will be dedicated in Gloucester County later this month. The dedication and unveiling of the new “Gloucester Hall” marker will begin at 1 p.m., Friday, October 26, at the sign’s location near the intersection of US 17/Va. 14 (George Washington Memorial Highway) and Bacons Fort Road, about 7.5 miles northwest of the Town of Gloucester. Keynote remarks during the ceremony will be provided by Dr. Warren M. Billings, a visiting professor at the College of William & Mary, and a historian, author, and editor of several books on early colonial Virginia history including The Papers of Francis Howard, Baron Howard of Effingham, 1643-1695 and Virginia's Viceroy, Their Majesties' Governor General, Francis Howard, Baron Howard of Effingham. Others speakers will be David Brown and Thane Harpole, archaeologists and co-directors of The Fairfield Foundation; A. J. Pate, sponsor of the marker; the Rev. Theodore H. McConnell, interim rector of Ware Episcopal Church in Gloucester, and a representative of the Department of Historic Resources (DHR). Gloucester Hall was built around the 1660s by Col. John Pate on his 2,100-acre plantation, which he inherited in 1672. In 1676, Nathaniel Bacon, the leader of an uprising of colonial frontiersmen and planters against Native Americans and the colony’s authorities, which came to be known as Bacon’s Rebellion, died at Gloucester Hall of a fatal illness that “effectively ended” the rebellion, according to the marker. The house also served in 1684 “as the first Virginia residence of Royal Governor Francis Howard, baron Howard of Effingham, whose wife, Lady Philadelphia Pelham Howard, died there in 1685,” in the marker’s words. Virginia’s historical highway marker program, which began in 1927 with the installation of the first historical markers along U.S. Route 1, is considered the oldest such program in the nation. Currently there are more than 2,200 official state markers, most maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation, as well as by local partners in jurisdictions outside of VDOT’s authority. Text of the marker: Gloucester Hall Near here stood Gloucester Hall (built ca. 1660s), where Bacon’s Rebellion effectively ended with the fatal illness of its leader, Nathaniel Bacon, in 1676. In 1684, this house served as the first Virginia residence of Royal Governor Francis Howard, baron Howard of Effingham, whose wife, Lady Philadelphia Pelham Howard, died there in 1685. Col. John Pate, a member of the Council of State, built the house on his 2,100-acre plantation, including 1,141 acres that his uncle Richard Pate had patented in 1650. Col. Thomas Pate inherited the plantation in 1672. Both Richard Pate and Col. Thomas Pate represented Gloucester County in the House of Burgesses. ### ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PATE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
