    3. Atty. Jay A. Scherline, 61, of Allentown, died on Monday, December 31, 2012 in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He was the husband of Lorrie L. (Lipschitz) Scherline. The couple had celebrated 33 years of marriage on July 1st. Born in New York, NY, he was the son of Shirley (Dauber) Scherline the late Irving Scherline. He was a member of Congregation Sons of Israel, Allentown. He was the founding member of Scherline and Associates Law Office in Allentown. Atty Scherline was involved in many organizations including the Minsi Trails Council Learning for Life Career Awareness Program, Bnai Brith Senior Citizens Housing, Jewish Family Service, Citizens for a Better Allentown, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, Bar Association of Lehigh County and the Anti-Defamation League. Atty. Scherline was awarded with the American Hero for Arthritis Award in 1998, Philanthropist of the Year Award in 2001, the National Volunteer Service Citation in 2009 from the Arthritis Foundation, the Movers and Shapers Award, Whos Who in American Law, United States Presidents Volunteer Service Award in 2005 and 2010, Silver Beaver Award from Minsi Trails Council Boy Scouts of America in 2011, Eastern Pennsylvania Business Journals Spotlight Award for Prominent Business Executives, and many other organizations. Survivors: wife; mother; sons, Justin and Lyell Scherline; sister, Gerri wife of Art Rudner; brother Stuart Scherline and Alan Pate; and nieces and nephews.     3. Lorraine Tyndall Pate, 89, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, December 30, 2012. She was born in Jones County on January 12, 1923, daughter of the late Roland F. Tyndall and Carrie Reynolds Tyndall. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lindley H. Pate and brothers, Allen and Arnold Tyndall. Mrs. Pate worked with Avis Rent-A-Car for over thirty years and was a longtime active member of First Christian Church. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Charles Pate (Sharon Beasley) of Raleigh and Lana Pate Ezzell (Pat) of Spring Hope; grandchildren, Kristie Pate of Wilmington, Edwin Pate (Rebecca) of Leland, Darren Ezzell (Dawn) of Nashville, Kari Ezzell (Crystal Harper) of Decatur, GA; great grandchildren Adria and Harrison Pate, Cole and Conner Ezzell, Logan and Evan Harper-Ezzell; daughter in law Judy D.     3. Kate Pate Walker was born in Vidor, Texas on November 3, 1922 to the late Frank and Doris Thompson Pate. At an early age, her family moved to Sour Lake, Texas where she remained until graduating from Blackshear High School. She then moved to Port Arthur in 1940 where she met her future husband, the late G. W. Walker, at St. Paul Methodist Church. During WW II Kate Pate joined the US Army and served her country in France as a member of the WAC. After an honorable discharge from military service, she returned to Port Arthur and married G. W. Walker in January 1946 after his discharge from the US Navy. Kate Walker was a Sunday school teacher at St. Paul for over 40 years. She also served her community as a volunteer worker at the United Board of Mission for over 30 years, president of the United Methodist Women, served on District and Conference of United Methodist Women, member of the Senior Citizens Group, member of the Esther Wesleyan Joy Circle, member of the Community Flower Club, member of the Women Interdenominational Association, worked as Velma Closet volunteer for RSVP, register of deed for the Pride of Port Arthur, and a good friend to all who needed a friend. She leaves to cherish many loving memories her children, four sons; Frank (Cathy), Michael, Reginald (Virginia), and Raymond (Cora); two daughters, Valerie Marsh (Dunstan) and Janice White (Howard); three sisters, Bernice Williams, Ruby Hankins, and Dorothy Brailsford; one brother, James Pate; a special friend, Ernestine Lee; 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, friends and the St. Paul United Methodist Church Family. She is survived by her daughters, Joan Ivy Edwards and husband, Wayne and Judith Ivy Hawksworth of Chesapeake. She is also survived by three granddaughters - Elise Edwards Walthall and her husband, E. B., Kimberly Hawksworth Sowers and her husband, Mark and Leslie Hawksworth Elliott and her husband, Brad, plus, four great-granddaughters, Brooke Walthall, Ashley Sowers, Megan Elliott, and Lauren Elliott.     3. John B Pate, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 27, 2012. John Pate was born June 29, 1925 in Conroe, Texas. He graduated from Harlingen High School and worked in his father's men's clothing store in Harlingen. During World War II he joined the US Army serving in the 6th infantry division of the Sixth Army. He arrived safely in the Philippines after a 30 day crossing of the Pacific in a crowded troop ship only to be stricken later with Typhus, Malaria and Polio. He became a medic after recovering from Typhus. John survived multiple beach landings in the Philippines including the battle of Luzon where he was awarded the Bronze star. John received the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. Returning home to San Antonio after the war, he eventually opened his own men's clothing store, Pates Men's Wear. Following those years in business for himself, John also worked for Satel's Menswear. He later served in Stephen's Ministry where he ministered to so many people in need. He became close friends to certain individuals he helped in their time of need. Mr. Pate was preceded in death by his brother Robert, his wife, Edna Clark Pate, his daughter Robbie Pate Ward, and his wife Katherine Pate. John is survived by his daughter Cheryl Pate Zack of Atlanta, Georgia, and his granddaughters Karen Ward, Stacey Ward both of San Antonio, Sydney Zack of Atlanta, Georgia, and his faithful dog Abby. Services will be held for Mr. Pate on Monday, January 14th at 10 AM at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, at the columbarium. Mrs. VanTuinen was a resident of Miramar Beach originally from Dora, Ala. She was Methodist by faith and a member of the Hawthorne Methodist Church in Hawthorne, N.J. She graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham receiving her Bachelor's Degree in Education. She worked as a schoolteacher for 25 years before retiring from the Ramsey School System in New Jersey. Mrs. VanTuinen is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis Barbieri; second husband, William VanTuinen; one brother, Robert Hagood and one daughter Bonnie Lou Barbieri.
