    3. Letter written by Johnson Pate to the William L Bebee, Editor of the Southern Baptist Messenger (Devoted To The Service Of the Old School Baptists], published Covington, Newton Co. GA. Pulished in 1 Sept 1853 issue. Coweta Co., Ga., May 15, 1853 [1st part is of religious nature... & is signed Johnson Pate].... [Johnson Pate continues writing] "N. B. As there is some room on this sheet yet, and as I have not put it in the ofice until this morning, suffer me to tell you some of my troubles. This year I agreed to serve two churches in DeKalb Co., Utoy and Camp Creek--the time of their meeting, at Utoy the second Saturday and Sunday in each month, and at Camp Creek the third. Well, this month when the time came to start to Utoy I thought I could not go; I had but two plow horses, and one of them was lame, and I thought I must run one plow, and if I went I must walk, and I was not able to do that, it being about thirty miles, and I did not start, and on Sunday one of my daughters fainted and fell out of her chair, and in the course of two days it was decided by all present five or six times that she was dead, but she is yet alive and on the mend, she was in very good health when taken. And when the time came to start to Camp Creek I decided about on the same ground, I could not go, I must stay at home and work or lose my crop, and on Monday my son who is with me got bit with a large Mocasin snake; we had just got out to work after dinner, when he called to me, O pa, I am bit, what shall I do? it seemed to strike me it was a judgement sent on me for not going to meeting. He started towards me, and I met him and took a suspender and corded his leg and put my mouth to the place and no doubt drew out some of the poison, for I soon took the toothache and have not been well since. My son is a little on the mend--two weeks gone and but very little work done. Brethren, my word is out to go to meeting if I have to walk. I have often thought what I heard brother Willis Norris say, that he went to meeting and how he saved his fodder, and the brethren, some of them, decided they must stay at home and save their fodder, and so they did not go and lost all their fodder, or a large part of it; but brother Norris went to meeting and staid until the meeting broke, and returned home and saved all his fodder. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole mattter, Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. Dear brethren and sisters, pray for poor me, that while I have to suffer here it may be for well doing, and not for evil doing. J. P. " This is from microfilm of "Southern Baptist Messenger 1852-1862." Lindy Hard

    1. [PATE] Roll Call - PATE, NC-IL-IA
    2. Carol Tolley
    3. Hi My deadend is Jesse PATE. He was b. in about 1814 in NC, probably Buncombe. Jesse married Loucretia EDWARDS in 1836 in Macon Co, IL. It seems probable that Jesse had several brothers in southern IL: Jacob, Redding, Wm, Riley. I believe Jacob followed Jesse and Loucretia when the family moved up to the mines in Jo Davies Co, IL where they stayed for a year or two before moving on to Jackson Co, IA. in 1838. Jesse died before 1850. Jacob PATE can be found in Jones Co, IA thru 1870. Jacob's wife's name was Emily, although I suspect she might have been his second wife. Anyone doing any research on these PATES? Carol

Willis is said to have been born on the day his father, Drew died. Descendants give his name as Willis JEFFERSON Pate, but all records I have found show him as Willis P Pate. In the 1860 Clark Co, MS census, the widow Elizabeth Jane Parker Pate, is md to S J Prickett, and the children are shown as Prickett's -- W R, age 9 (b. 1951); J L, age 7 (b. 1853) and Willis, age 5 (b. 1855). Elizabeth Jane & S J Pricket were in 1870 Jasper Co, MS and 1880 Nacogdoches Co, TX. Does anybody have answers to the puzzles?? Jinks

    1. [PATE] James David Pate 29 Jan 1817-28 Aug 1865
    2. Joel Pate
    3. Jinks recently posted information, from GenForum, about the E-Bay auction of a Civil War letter from Jane (Jincy) Moore to her husband, James David Pate. The 27 Oct 1864 letter read as follows ..My dear Husband, I received your kind and affectionate letter dated 17th of this instant on Monday last and was most happy to hear from you and to learn that you were still able to be up about I am happy to inform you that we are all well at present and getting along as well as possible considering the times, and I do hope and trust that these few lines may reach your safe and find you in the enjoyment of the best of health. I was sorry to hear that you had to leave Macon, I was sorry to hear that you could not get a furlough, but you must keep trying perhaps you will succeed some of these days I will put up the sugar cane as soon as I get done hauling in my corn, I have not done gathering corn but I reckon I will get done this week. There has been no cold here to hurt anything yet, no not enough to kill the gourd or potato vines. I have right smart of peas picked and will pick more as I get time, I have got up seventeen very nice meat hogs and will get more as soon as I c! an. I will take care of the potatoes I have seven pigs near about raised, and twelve more about the yard, and John saw twelve more in the woods, which makes 31 that I know of, and I will get up more as fast as I can You may be assured that I will take care of everything the best I know how. I will do what you say about the Davis and Rhodes places and get the rent home as soon as I can. I reckon that Jonathan Walker will help John get those two hogs out of the double run he saw them theres the other day. I was glad that Bennet got to stay with you some I wish you could be together all the time. I got a letter from Bennet at the same time I received yours and he was well at that time. My tax is paid already. Mr. Jonathan Smith paid it for me, he sold some of your steers and paid your tax and brought me the balance of the money. Your tax was 392.18 the war tax is not paid yet. I have done all I could to get you a detail, keep in good heart I will try again I want you to get a f! urlough and come home and get your clothes. Write soon and let me know where you are, if I had known that you had been in Macon all this time I would have sent you more provisions I sent you a parcel of sugar cane, five pounds of bacon, two chickens and a par of socks and some potatoes, and would like to know if you got them. Your Mother, Hansel and the children all want to see you very much and send their love to you. Sam grows finely. I remain, My dear Husband your affectionate Wife Jane Pate The letter seems to names four of their sons, i.e., Bennett, John, Sam and Hansel. His older son Bennett Pate served- Company B, 19th Georgia Cavalry, also Company G, 10th Confederate Cavalry and 5th Cavalry Battalion, Hillard's Legion. He, and later his widow, applied for pension in Wilcox Co Georgia. James David Pate died shortly after the end of the war. I do not yet know the cause of his death. Perhaps it was war related. I only hope the person who purchased the letter is a descendent and appreciates it. Joel

Matilda, Mary, Hattie, and James were children born to the union of James Marion and Caroline Roemer. Bertha, Jesse, William, Laura, Louis and Eustace were born to the union of James Marion and Emaline. I believe James Marion's mother's name was also Matilda as I have a letter in my possession address to her son (James Marion) and signed, "Your loving mother, Matilda". Somewhere I remember being told that she was an immigrant from Europe. If so she would not have been born in Ky. If anyone has anymore information I would greatly treasure it! Deborah Pate Salgado
