    1. [PATE] Lucinda and Emanuel Pate
    2. Karen Borden
    3. Joel Yes, I know about those, but thank you for your efforts. Can't seem to get back any further than 1850. Family lore says that the Jeremiah Pate, in Knox County, on the Court Records from ca 1820 to 1849 is the father of Emanuel. However, the will recorded on those same records does not mention Emanuel or Lucy; it appears to be for another Jeremiah. Karen

    1. [PATE] Elizabeth Pate 1800 Tn and Henderson Clark 1797
    2. Richard Sheridan
    3. Dear Pate List People! Please think on the Dyersburg Pates and their TANGLED web. I have my Eliza. Ann Pate bn 1800, TN, who married Henderson Clark (e) 1797, KY. The marriage took place in the Huntsville, Madison Co, Al area. They move west to Dyersburg in 1827 with oldest son Charles P. Clark. Also in the group is Jane Milliken and her husband Stephen Pate who had married in Madison in 1814 and their son Andrew Jackson Pate bn 1815 (Madison Co Al and named after the houseguest-the future president Andrew Jackson-in the home and returning from the battles in NO). Stephen Pate's brother Mathew (who would later marry Jane Milliken Pate and have their only son E. Cain Pate bn 1831) was with this group as well as an older woman of sufficient age to be Stephen and Mathew's Mother and several young male and female Pates with both Mathew (and the older lady) and Jane Milliken Pate. (All of these are listed on the 1830 Dyer Co Tn Census). In the same group is Zachariah Ruc! ker and his wife, Susan Pate 1805 Tn who also had married in Madison Co, Alabama. Susan in town lore is considered to be the sister of my Elizabeth Ann Pate Clark. At the time time William Miller has come with his first wife. Later when he remarries after her death, he marries Mary Ann Pate (called Polly) who was bn 1823 in Al. In 1850 she is living with James Pate , son of Stephen Pate of the 1817 Madison Co Al will. Court documents in 1851 say that she and Mathew Pate (not the one married to Jane Milliken Pate) are two of the eight children of Stephen Pate deceased of Dyer Co. So you have in the 1830 Dyer Census 1)my Henderson Clark and his wife Eliz. Ann Pate, 2)Mathew Pate with older lady and other teenage and older males, 3) Jane Pate and more children than can be accounted for 4) James Pate, wife and blended family to include Mary Ann Pate daughter of Stephen Pate 5) Zach Rucker and his wife Susan Pate (( One thing all better remember is that the Rucker list continues to insist that Susan Pate is Susan Pope and forget that the same marriage list in Madison Al has Zach Rucker as Zach Burke. I have a copy of the letter from the Grandaughter where she states the grandparents names (Pate and Rucker)and that they were married in Madison Co Al. )) Any glimmer would help on this tangle. Meredith Back from wandering!

    1. [PATE] Yancey Co NC Pate families
    2. Joel Pate
    3. Janice Pate provided the following. This message contains hyperlinks to the PATE-L archives. First let me direct you to the Pate-L archives: the two documents cover the Civil War records on file at the National Archives for the 29th NC Reg. I had Joel post the raw data that I had found. <http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/P/PATE+2002+175259674+F> <http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/P/PATE+2002+180268842+F> The George Washington PATE in Unicoi County, TN was either the son of Thomas PATE or John/Eason PATE. (There were no less than 3 George Washington Pates.) Right now I am working at a disadvantage. I am in the middle of moving and my filing cabinets are in storage. I have to work from a text file (not my genealogy program or original documents). First you have several families, all related in some way, but not all of them are siblings, nor are they all from Yancey. It's a shame that there is so much mis-information on the web posted as fact. I encourage everyone to double check my facts as well. Thomas PATE (b. ca 1815) and (first wife) Silva/Lila HENSLEY are the parents of John and Wallace (Cornwallace) PATE which moved to Searcy County, AR. Thomas' brother John (b. ca. 1835) married Elizabeth Mashburn on 28 Mar 1857 in McDowell County, NC. Thomas also had a brother named Wallace (b. ca. 1814) who lived in Cherokee County, NC. This Wallace married a Rowena (last name unknown) that was born in Jefferson County, TN (according to the 1860 census). They had one child, her name was either Jane or Irene (it's hard to decipher the handwriting). Jesse PATE was another brother (my great-grandfather) also living in Cherokee next to Wallace. In the 1860 census, Jesse was-down the road apiece-still in Cherokee. Living next to Wallace (born Yancey) and Rowena was a Wallace Pate and Terrance ROGERS (daughter of Dana and Telitha ROGERS). This Wallace was born in Iredell County, NC. (The census taker outdid himself by adding the county of birth.) One of the Wallace's sold their property to Jesse and it was recorded as William Pate. In 1850 Thomas' brother John Pate (b. ca. 1835) was in the household of John (Jehu) R. Patterson. It is believed, by some, that his wife Nancy is one of Thomas' sisters. In 1850 there is also a John/Eason Pate in Yancey County. No one has been able to provide proof that he is one of the children of John and Fanny. I have received some information that he is actually a nephew of Fanny's, but again, no proof. The children of John PATE (aka John RANDOLPH) and Fanny BARRETT were: 1. Wallace Pate (b. ca. 1814) 2. Thomas Pate (b. ca. 1815) 3. Jesse Pate (b. 8 Nov. 1820) 4. A daughter (Possibly, Nancy Pate Patterson(b. ca. 1822) no proof exists on this.) 5. George Washington Pate (b. 4 June 1824) 6. Catherine Pate Tittle (b. ca. 1826) 7. Naoma/Naomi Pate Rich (b. ca. 1831) 8. James Pate (b. ca. 1833) 9. John Pate (b. ca. 1835) 10. Marilla (Relia) Pate Mashburn (b. ca. 1835) 11. Bacchus S Pate (b. 8 Feb. 1836, never married) I have a copy of his memoirs written in 1858.

    3. Lucilious Green Pate, b. Nov 1826, d. 1910 md (1) Lucinda Badgley (2) 1897, Martha A (??)-Clariday Children: Mary Emmeline, b. 1849 Sarah A Pate, b. 1849 Martha Matilda , b. 1853 Serrelda Jane, b. 1855 Sarah Elizabeth, b. 1855 Cordelia, b. 1859 Martha , b. 1867 L G is said to have married 3 times, and 2nd to Mary E Payton - but according to the census record, he only married twice, and in 1900 and 1910 his wife is shown as Martha A - and quite a bit younger than he is. L G served in the Civil War and applied for a pension in 1890 from MO - his widow, MARY E PATE, also applied for a widow's pension in 1910. Did he possibly divorce Mary E Pate, and she applied for the pension after he died? The Civil War pension record would, no doubt, help on this, they are sometimes a goldmine of information. This family was in 1850 St Clair Co, IL; 1860 Williamson Co, IL; 1870 Washington Co, IL; 1900 & 1910 Jefferson Co, IL - I have not been able to find them in 1880, which would be a great help. There are several more children attributed to this family, but they do not show up in the census records, and should be there in 1870. Martha Clariday Pate evidently had only the one child by her first marriage, Mary Clariday, b. 1889. Does anyone have help on this family? Jinks

John S. Marmaduke and Maj. Gen. James F. Fagan [CS] Forces Engaged: Provisional cavalry division [US]; cavalry division [CS] Estimated Casualties: 1,300 total (US 100; CS 1,200) Description: About six miles south of Trading Post, where the Marais de Cygnes engagement had occurred, the brigades of Col. Frederick W. Benteen and Col. John F. Phillips, of Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton's Provisional Cavalry Division, overtook the Confederates as they were crossing Mine Creek. These Rebels, stalled by their wagons crossing the ford, had formed a line on the north side of Mine Creek. The Federals, although outnumbered, commenced the attack as additional troops from Pleasonton's command arrived during the fight. They soon surrounded the Rebels, resulting in the capture of about 600 men and two generals, Brig. Gen. John S. Marmaduke and Brig. Gen. William L. Cabell. Having lost this many men, Price's army was doomed. Retreat to friendly territory was the only recourse.
