    1. [PATE] Thomas and William Paye in Tuscaloosa
    2. Linda Brunner
    3. A Beck cousin just pointed out to me that there is a land grant for Thomas and William Pate in Tuscaloosa, on March 30, 1837 for 159.6 acres. The deed mentions that the land is held in common and not as joint tenancy. Apparently this is the land on which the Pate cemetery is located: SW 23, 21S. 12W. While the deed doesn't state a relationship between the two men, it seems obvious to me that Thomas and William are either brothers or father and son. It just doesn't seem logical that it would be between uncle and nephew....to me anyway. Has anyone else seen this before or have any other information on it? I'd also like to hear others thoughts on the relationship between Thomas and William. Linda

    3. Jinks The Julian Pate b ca 1823 you have here is perhaps Julia Pate who married a James N Minor in Gwinnett Co GA ca 1850. Sarah Jenkins Pate was enumerated in the 1880 census of Gwinnett Co GA. See ED 118/29, PinckeyVille, 252/252, P435. Head of house is Julia MINER. Some Minor surname researchers hold that Julia Pate Minor is buried in Lawrence Co AL. See message #1 Minor forum and message #1 Pate forum at Genforum. 3. Jinks, The small entry in the court record of Dyer Co seems clear that Mathew is declaring himself to be the son , Polly Miller (mentioned as the wife of Wm Miller), as the daughter as two of the eight children of Stephen D Pate. It says that Stephen is of Dyer (and Margaret reminds me that Dyer is a town in Gibson Co) and although this is a Dyer Co Record, since it does not say Dyer Co but "Dyer" it probably means the town of Dyer. I have seen the original and entire record of the Dyer Co entry. It is the one I copied and placed on the net. It seems to refer to a previous document but the intent is clear that Stephen D. Pate is the father and Mathew and Mrs. Miller are two of the eight children. I believe that Mathew is trying to establish clear inheritance lines. This may be important since several of the original 1830 Dyer Co Pates are no longer living. Stephen (married to Jane Milliken)before 1830, Mathew (married to Jane Milliken)@1844-50), Elizabeth Ann Pate Clark(1848) are dead by early 1850s, and AJ is not long lived. (Mathew in the suit goes to Polly's husband Wm Miller (of the original generation) and to my Col Wm A Dawson (of his own generation) as securities.) I think that the Gibson land and property might settle the question. Anyone near Dyer and Gibson who could look for us? 3. Carol......you have a nice name! :-) I wanted to take a moment to THANK YOU for this posting. The DAR lookup I used before was many many years ago, and private..they were a bit overtaxed on the demand they had then. It is terrific that DAR is offering this service!! I know they mostly are volunteers, too...so if you are connected, please let them know how much they are appreciated. It's a generous slice of their life they are sharing with us, and aside from a donation to the org.....a thank you to the volunteer is, I am sure, welcomed. I think you must be a member to access that webpage, but Im not sure. I realized this was probably private when I saw http://member1.dar.org ...or something like that as it was launching in email. 1. [PATE] The Mystery of Madison Mayberry Pate
    2. Joel Pate
    3. LEGEND: Family tradition hold that prior to, or soon after, 1850 a PATE family, originally from TN, residing in MS lost several members to an disease epidemic, perhaps cholera. Lost were the father and mother and an unknown number of children. Four children survived. They were: G Henderson Pate b TN ca 1834 James Pate b TN ca 1836 Anna Pate Madison Mayberry Pate b MS ca 1853 These children were taken in by a Smith family and relocated to the White River area near Helena, Phillips Co, AR. The Smiths were millers and hired a man, perhaps named Hinkle, to build and open their mill. When Mr Hinkle moved on he took Madison Mayberry Pate with him. Anna Pate perhaps married a Mr Gwanty. G Henderson Pate and James Pate also married, but would soon die during the Civil War. They supposedly served in the same unit. 3. Dear Jinks, The only document is the one from the Dyer Co records which seems to be an extraction from another co.Then the Dyer Minutes 1852-1856 pg 163 Mar 3, 1851 say that Stephen D. Pate is deceased leaving no will. The administrators are Wm Miller (husband of Polly), Thos J Connell and William A. Dawson (son in law of my Elizabeth Pate Clarke and my direct line) security offered $8,000. I asked the other county to do a search but they were thrown off by the line that said the late Stephen D. Pate of Dyer. They said that there was no such document. I checked all the land documents in Dyer and in the library and the quote in the records was the one that said that Mathew (who brought the suit) was one and the wife of Wm Miller (that would be Mary Ann Pate) the other, two of eight children of deceased Stephen Pate of Dyer. (Remember that Polly Pate Miller was living with James Pate in 1850.) We need someone to go into the surrounding counties to check land entries and divisions and see what portions were divided between Mathew, Mary Ann (Polly) and other heirs. (Portions of Dyer Co are now in the other counties.) It will most likely be January before I can even consider that. I think we need to consider the children living with Jane Pate in one household in 1830. Also look at the family with Mathew Pate in another home and then the third household with James Pate. The histories say 3 children are connected with Jane. Andrew Jackson Pate bn 1815, Mathew D. and E. Cain 1831. Your friend had believed that Mathew was married before he married his brother's widow and that might account for some of the children in the Jane home but why are Mathew and Jane living apart in 1830. I have been gone or had houseguests since Aug. 1. I will try to post the 1830 census and see if we can jog someone's mind. Do we know anyone who could go into the surrounding counties? Especially Gibson. 2. Jinks, believe those listed may be related to your "brick walls" Joe/Joab/Josiah of Blount, AL. They were also in the Mobile Register "Tornado Victims" in an article in which David Pate and Daniel Pate of Auburn and Orange Beach, AL were interviewed shortly after visiting their parents (I believe Aaron Pate) on Scott Cemetery Rd. In Walker Co, mentioned that parents home leveled; they survived in shelter. However, their cousin across the street and daughter (the Alexanders) perished in the storm.
