This will be a three parter -- all three of these families have ties to Washington Co, IL - but are they brothers??? Or how are they related?? And since these were before census records named the children - it's hard to decide which children belong to which family, and it seems some have attributed the same children to more than one family. Natalie: If I track on this correctly- Robert Francis Pate and David E B Pate had a sister named Mary Pate. Mary Pate married a man named Courtland Elwood. Mary Pate and Courtland Elwood had at least one child, a daughter probably named Mary Elizabeth Elwood. Mary E Elwood appears in the 1880 census of Escambia Co FL as g/dau to the head of house, Elizabeth Pate age 72 b SC. Mary E Elwood's uncle David (E. B.) Pate, a widower, is also in the household! In looking at the 1850 Butler Co AL census, it is your conclusion that 13 year old Bennilee Pate is Bemilec Pate or in point of fact is David Elijah Bemilec Pate. It is also your conclusion that 10 year old Robert Pate in that census is Robert Francis Pate. Mary Pate age 6, is the Mary Pate who married Courtland Elwood. I CONCUR. Can you point to citations that refer to David E. B. Pate? Joel, Here is another thing to wonder about Robert F. Pate. I have his death certificate. It states that he was 78 when he died in 1923, which would have made him only 5 in 1850. Until I received this note I have never read or heard any mention that Joel Bennett Pate 1806-aft 1870, who married Elizabeth Sloan 1828 in Thomas Co GA, was a younger brother to Abimileck Pate. Anything is possible, but I've never heard that one before. Where did you run across that information?
