My Lewis PATE b1791 TN was in Washington Co., Illinois by 1830. A Mathew PATE (the second) b1785 was there at the same time. Does anyone know whether Mathew was born in TN, or have anything that might prove them to be brothers? I do know Mathew had a son named Lewis. Lewis later migrated to Greene Co., Missouri. He was a Methodist minister. Chandra Dawson Martin
Hi list, Wanted to share the news that a mystery has been solved regarding my 3g grandfather's Civil War service. Before I do that, though - Julia Linford, if you are on this list, please send me your new email address. Now for my story: Charles W. PATE was b 1830 in Washington Co., Illinois and d 31 Jan 1894 in Hagarville, Johnson Co., Arkansas. His tombstone (at Annie's Chapel Cemetery in Hagarville) says only C.W. PATE Co. G 2nd AR Cav. I assumed this to be a Confederate regiment, but after looking online, I determined that there was actually a volunteer Union regiment with this designation. However, the only PATE on the muster roll was a Wesley M. Pate. I searched and searched for some reference to my Charles W., then considered that Wesley may have been his middle name. After all, he had a grandson named named John Wesley Pate. Further examination revealed that Wesley was even born in the right county in Illinois. Then I looked pension application records, which indicated that Wesley W.'s widow (the initial was incorrect on the online rolls) "Nancy" had applied for his pension after his death. My Charles' fourth and last known wife was named Eliza. I spent a matter of time wondering about this and not knowing what to do about it, until a (possible) cousin's inquiry spurred me on (Thank you, Susan!). I gathered my courage and my credit card, and ordered "Wesley's" pension records from the National Archives. About two months later, I received an inch-thick pile of papers. Lo and behold, near the top of the stack was an affidavit by my Charles' daughter, Caroline (Pate) OWEN), in which she said the recruiting clerk had incorrectly recorded her father's name, writing Wesley W. instead of Charles W. More affadavits from neighbors said he went by C.W. or Wesley, and explained that his last wife, though always caled Eliza, was actually named Nancy AnnEliza. The pension papers also included his second wife's approximate death date, the divorce decree from his third marriage and his and Eliza's dates of death, as well as information on her first husband and her son from that marriage. Although it didn't give me any leads on his father's family (Lewis PATE b1791 TN), I did get more than I expected. So I guess the moral of the story is, when in doubt, go ahead and order the records. Jinks, This is my family. Catherine King and John Pate were married April 22, 1869, at Seguin, Guadalupe Co, TX. I have not been able to confirm that this John Pate is the same John Pate listed on the 1860 US Census of Santa Clara Co, CA. Do you have anything that might confirm this idea? John and Catherine's son, Ben Davis Pate, was the only son to have issue. John Henry died young of typhoid. "Uncle Will" and Fanny [buried at Williams Cemetery] divorced and never had any children. Ben and "Amner's" had 7 grandchildren - 6 still living. We have only an entry in our Family Bible and a memorial tribute written by the retired Confederate Gen. Henry E. McCulloch to guide us. The Memorial said his parents were John and Mary Pate, but many people went to TX trying to evade their past. If anyone can place our John Pate [1836] with his parents and/or siblings, we would be forever grateful. Thanks for any assistance here. Mindy: The short answer to your question is "no". The overly long answer- The Elijah and Elizabeth Pate in the 1860 census of Monroe Co AL are Elijah Pate and (Martha) Elizabeth Gilland who married in Fayette Co GA 4 Oct 1850. This Elijah Pate can be found in the 1850 census of Fayette Co GA living with a much older women, also named Elizabeth Pate. Probably his mother. There were Gilland families in Fayette Co during the 1840-1860 period. Elijah and Elizabeth Gilland Pate were in Monroe Co AL in 1870 and Bastrop Co TX in 1880 and 1900. The 1900 census record reflects that she had given birth to 10 child of which 7 were alive at census time. They had been married 50 years per the census record. I have not yet been able to research graves in Bastrop Co TX, but if their graves are marked, there should be a record. It is my conclusion that Elijah Pate, the putative father of David Elijah Bemilec Pate and Robert Francis Pate, died before the 1850 census of Butler Co AL and his widow, Elizabeth, was enumerated as head of household.
