    1. [PATE] Re: PATEs in VA - Samuel and Zilla (Broach) PATE
    2. Carol Tolley
    3. Joel, Whew - you knocked me out. Thanks for all the explanation! I guess I don't quite know how to respond - I have just begun to look at this line and now I will certainly look at it more carefully and from the bottom up. I have info from the booklet about Major Thomas Pate and his decendants. This info came from the Letters of Frances Shacklett Fast and Estie Stith Crabbe 1934 - 1966. I don't know how accurate this is as far as factual information. I use this kind of thing as a direction, but not as final proof. I have seen the info Jinks has on ancestry.com about Jacob and Zilla and realize he is unsure of some information, even though a dozen other people seemed to think it was fact. That is mainly why I asked if anyone knew anything about the line. If Jinks had some questions, I thought it was worth asking about. I think the thing that has attracted me is the naming pattern. Jesse is not a name in many of the Pate families and I find Jesse with a list of Pates in so. IL in the 1820's - Redding, Wm, etc. Names that fit in. I did find Redding and his brother Anthony Pate living with Elizabeth Thorn in Washington Co, GA in 1850. I am not sure yet who his parents were, but it might be another Redding Hamilton PATE. I am hoping to connect my Jesse Pate to one of the later generations of Samuel Jacob Pate - not caring so much about him - but finding the parents of my Jesse. I have no connecting point other than Sangamon Co, IL where I know he was, and Buncombe, NC which is where he said he was born. He married into the Zachariah Edwards family who came from Wake Co, NC to Robertson Co, TN and then to Macon Co, IL (by Sangamon) and Jackson Co, IA. The Pates and Edwards married in southern IL. I also was given some info on a John Bee Log PATE. Thanks for all your information. You made well thoughtout points on the research. Any suggestions as to where to go from here would be appreciated. 2. Joel Pate
    3. Carol I regret to inform you that you have found one of the most unreliable and error filled genealogical documents, relating to the PATE surname, that exists. What you present is the core of the 1917 work of John Ben Pate of GA. The principal figure in John Ben Pate's work is Rev William Pate who allegedly was a son of Jacob Pate and Zillah Broach. You present the 9 child list of supposed children of Jacob Pate and Zillah Broach. Others use an 11 child list. Two things are important in dealing with the children of Jacob Pate and Zillah Broach. 1. Jacob Pate was DEAD no later than 21 Nov 1752. His last will and testament was made and signed in Surry Co VA 15 Jun 1752. The LWT is recorded in Surry Co VA Will and Deed Book 9, pages 810-811. It was filed for probate on 21 Nov 1752 by Zillah Pate, wife and named executrix, and William Clinch, also a named executor, on 21 Nov 1752. 2. There is no evidence, reliable or otherwise, that Jacob Pate and Zillah Broach Pate ever owned property in or resided in North or South Carolina. The 1752 LWT of Jacob Pate specifically mentions property owned by him. This property, by specification was 1) "lands in James City County" (VA) and 2) chattel slaves "all of my negroes." By inference you might conclude that he also was a property owner in Surry County VA. It is safe and proper to conclude that Jason Pate b ca 1754 Elizabeth Pate b 1756 John Pate b 1760 Were NOT children of Jacob Pate who died in 1752. These errors puts all of the "facts" you report in to a questionable category. Finally, you report that John Pate b ca 1760 1st md Hester Green and 2nd md Nancy Cowart. John Ben Pate in 1917 wrote that John Pate b ca 1760 married an unnamed bride and had three sons and secondly married (ca 1794) Nancy Cowart. It was, in my OPINION, the sons of John Pate and Nancy Cowart that were the progenitors of the Washington and Pulaski County (Hawkinsville) GA Pate lines. Three names in these Pate lines stand out. They are John HAYNES Pate, Anthony COWART Pate and REDDING Hamilton Pate. In my OPINION the first wife of John Pate b ca 1760 was PERHAPS Betty HAYNES. A John Pate married a Betty Haynes in Bedford Co VA 19 Jan 1788. There is some evidence that a John Pate or John PACHT married an Ester or Hester Greene in Kent Co RI or Rennesalaer Co NY. Most evidence on Rev William Pate points to a birth date of 1770 to 1776 not 1750. It is difficult to accept the proposition that Rev William Pate was a Revolutionary War Soldier. It is equally difficult to accept the proposition that a Jesse Pate b in Buncombe Co NC in early 1800's was a descendant of Jesse Pate and Zillah Broach of Surry Co VA. 3. Hi everyone, I have mostly been a spectator the last few months, but I finally have something to work on with my PATEs. My Jesse PATE was born in Buncumbe, NC in the early 1800's. In the 1820's he is in and around Sangamon Co, IL along with Jacob, Riley, Wm, and Redding PATE - voting, marrying, etc. It is possible they are all brothers of Jesse. Jesse marries Loucretia EDWARDS and they leave the area for Galena, IL. They stay about a year and then move into the Wisconsin Territory of Jackson Co, IA, where they are among its first settlers. I have been trying to find his parents to no avail. But it has been suggested to me that the possibility of his belonging to this Matthew and Samuel line are a good possibility. Any takers? 3. Jinks, The Stephen who died in 1851 is buried in the Clark graveyard with Henderson Clark, Eliz Pate Clark and other members of the family. A small graveyard and only family members, it seems to lend weight to the idea that Stephen D who died in 1851 is a part of the family that included E Cain Pate and Eliz Pate Clark. It would take care of one of the stick figures. 1. Re: [PATE] Dyer Co, TN Pate's

    3. Jinks, There seems to be a problem. My notes say that Mathew D. Pate who is the son of Stephen Pate mentioned in the Gibson Co Chancery Court proceedings (sister is wife of William Miller) is married twice. First to Ann D. Sampson (bn 24 Feb 1831 and died 29 March 1863. Their son is Mathew Watson Pate bn 01 Dec 1861 and died 15 Nov 1934 in Ft. Smith Ark Second to Elizabeth Moore Davis bn 27 Nov 1834 and who died 20 Jan 1879. Their son is John York Pate bn 28 Oct 1877 and died 21 June 1961. Also it does seem that the 1860 mortality list includes the Stephen Pate bn Alabama in 1826 and living with James Pate in 1850. My current belief is that Stephen Pate bn 1826 and listed as an "idiot" is not the son of James Pate but one of the children of the Stephen Pate married to Jane Milliken. It is unlikely that she would immediately have one child in 1815 and then not have another until 1831 (Cain with Stephen's brother Mathew Pate). And it does seem likely that the Mathew Pate noted as one of the three children of Jane Milliken in the Dyer histories (and who declares himself the son of Stephen in the 1850s) is the son of Stephen. I tend to believe that for whatever reason (most likely the deaths of both Jane Milliken Pate (widow of Stephen Pate)and her 2nd husband Mathew Pate), James Pate took in some of the children of Stephen Pate and Jane Milliken. My Henderson Clark whose wife Elizabeth Pate is dead took in E. Cain Pate the one known son of Jane Milliken Pate and her husband Mathew Pate. There is no doubt in the Dyer mind that the three men, Andrew Jackson Pate bn 1815, Mathew Pate and E Cain Pate are brothers. Keep searching! 3. I found this posted and thought it might be of interest to those working on the Dyer Co, TN Pate's -- JUL 1907 MISS NAOMI PATE (of Heloise), whose sad death occurred at this place last Friday, an account of which was published in the State Gazette, has cast a gloom over our community. The true facts in the case are as follows: MISS PATE took the deadly poison at 8 o’clock in the morning and died at noon the same day. She went to the store, got the medicine and came back to her brother’s house (CHARLES PATE), took the medicine, then laid down and called her niece, MISS HOLLINGSWORTH, of Nashville, and begged her to stay with her mother. Her niece asked her why she wanted her to make such a promise, and the reply was that she was going to die. She said she had taken two bottles of morphine and wanted to die. Dr J L HUEY was sent for at once and he worked faithfully with her till the end. It was a love affair, but all a mistake that they had quarreled. She had not seen or heard from him for three weeks. She was 18 years old. She leaves an aged mother and two brothers to mourn her sad death. (M14.3.6) She is the daughter of Charles Hall Pate & wife, Julia A (Kimbrough) Pate; a sister, Ona Frances Pate md Levi Hollingsworth and a brother, John William Pate married Minnie Hollingsworth. I'll also after painting the porch put some of the land and family intertwinings back on the list of Pates, Millers, Clarks etc. Plus go back and look at James Pate's numbers of children in 1840 and put the sticks with Jane Pates and they "seem" to indicate what happend to a large number of children living with Jane from 1840 to 1850 when she is dead. He jumps from about 6 to about 10. Ah life is amusing and confusing with these Pates. Meredith > >

    1. [PATE] Siota Bell stepdaughter of Andrew Jackson Pate
    2. Richard Sheridan
    3. Jinks, My note on Siota is that she is the daughter of Martha Susan Thurman Belle Jackson and of Solomon Belle. Solomon Belle is the first husband of Martha Susan. Mrs. Collins says that she married Sanford Marchant, her aunt's stepson. I guess the question is then--did she marry Wm McCoy after (or before Sanford) or not at all ? Meredith. Meredith

    1. [PATE] Siata Pate and Wm J. McCoy Dyer Co
    2. Richard Sheridan
    3. Dear List, Jinks has found that Siata Pate who was with Andrew Jackson Pate in 1850 has given her 1/8 interest in the estate of Stephen D. Pate to Mathew D Pate. It says that Wm McCoy and "Scota", his wife sell to Mathew their interest in the estate of the late brother Stephen D. Pate. Several questions??? It would appear that Mathew D Pate who was living with James Pate in 1850 is then not only the sibling of "Polly" Pate Miller wife of William Miller but also Siata kwho was living with AJ Pate. This would give three of the eight children claimed by Mathew D. Pate in the Gibson and Dyer court documents. Who are the others? Can someone pick others out of the 1850 families in Dyer. Can we consider the the "idiot" Stephen (1850 census) bn 1826, living with James is of the eight? He was bn in Alabama. G. W., male is bn 1815 AL. Jane 1822, RA 1834 (Male). When you look at the 1830 stick figures with Jane Milliken Pate Pate (married to the two brothers Stephen and Mathe! w), there are numbers of people unaccounted for! Another interesting fact is that in that most Southern and CSA of states, a W. J. McCoy of Dyer is with a USA Union unit. Are there any McCoys out there looking at Pates??? L. M. McCoy is living with Martha Susan Thurman Bell Pate (widow of Andrew Jackson Pate) in 1860. Ideas???? Meredith Also does anyone know if Mathew who married Jane Milliken Pate had been married before? I am interested in both family belief and proof. There has got to be a glimmer somewhere!

    1. [PATE] Dyer Co Pate's
    2. Jinks Lee
    3. Meredith & List - I didn't say the Siata Pate with Andrew Pate in 1850 census is one and the same as Scota McCoy in the deed - only that I WONDERED IF it was one and the same. There appear to have been two Matthew Pate's in Dyer - a Matthew D(aniel) Pate and a Matthew B Pate. In 1861 a John Halliburton deeds to the heirs of Matthew B Pate - but the heirs are not named. Also it appears there were two Stephen Pate's there - the Stephen Pate, age 24, listed in the household of James Pate in 1850 (as idiot) and the S D Pate, age 23, (Stephen D?) shown in the household of R H Goodlow. There were 5 Pate children living with other families in 1850 - COULD THEY BE THE CHILDREN OF JANE PATE AND/OR STEPHEN OR MATTHEW PATE??? Jane and Matthew Pate were both dec'd by 1850 M Pate, (male) age 25 (is this Matthew?) living with C P Clark S D Pate, (male) age 23 (is this Stephen D?) living with R H Goodlow E L Pate, age 20 (FEMALE) living with J E Anders Cain Pate, age 19, living with H Clark Siata Pate, age 17, living with A J Pate THESE ARE ONLY SPECULATIONS - sure wish someone could come up with the proof one way or the other Jinks
