The following information was recently forwarded to me for posting to PATE-L. Joel ETHNIC INDEX Bills of Sale of Slaves (1801-1825) Compiled by Robert L. Bailey 24 Oct 1807, Greene County, Tennessee. Bill of Sale from Matthew PATE to Jeremiah PATE . . . for a certain negroe man named Frank . . . Deed Book C-1, page 231. <http://www.roanetnheritage.com/research/ethnic/african/slave01.htm>
I have been going through this Matthew -maze for years now. I would appreciate having the 'source' for the children of M. Pate & Dabney...would anyone know of it? 1. I question why my maternal gr-gr-grandmother Margery (Elizabeth?) PATE, b. 1782-1783 was not listed with them. 2. According to handwritten notes of the Family Bible, Anna DAUBNEY (or some such spelling) is listed (without dates), and Matthew PATE listed of VA, as parents. I do not have the actual Bible, just notes made from it by one of my Aunts many years ago. 3. My maternal grandfather's name was Matthew Pate Sistler, grandson of Margery Pate, namesake of Matthew Pate. Any help that can be offered would be very welcomed. I was at the Texas State Library yesterday looking at Bell County cemetery listings and came across the following: Bell County Cemetery Records, Vol 3 PATE Mr. Jeff died 1969 at age 84 Margaret Lee Ann 1886-1960 Dyess Cemetery 9.5 miles Southeast of Temple, TX Hope this helps someone. Carol - Matthew was evidently a favorite name in the Pate's and was passed down in several lines - And as you know - none of these older records are absolutely correct - just the best guestimate So will just list what I can - and beware, most of it needs more verification (1) The Matthew Pate, father of Mary Pate who md Lawrence McGeorge was son of Matthew Pate (b. ca 1738) who md a Dabney (this from DAR records, which are not always correct) from Bedford Co, VA Mary also had a brother, Matthew Pate, b. ca 1780 who md Mary W Harrison. (2) Matthew Pate, b. ca 1700 md Jean -- This family was from Halifax Co, VA and a lot of info from the John Christian "Day Book:" They had a son Matthew Pate b. c 1735 and a son, Jeremiah Pate, b. c 1730 (among other children) This Jeremiah Pate, b. c 1730 had a son Matthew Pate, b. c 1762 md Drucilla Hobson, served in the Rev War. Drucilla filed for a Rev War pension (very lengthy) which gave a lot of the family info (3) Matthew Pate, b. c 1735 son of Anthony Pate & Sarah -- from Montgomery Co, VA No futher info (4) Matthew Pate, b. c 1755 md Elizabeth Cardwell - son of Jeremiah Pate and -- Bender - from Gloucester Co, VA Abingdon Parish Register info (5) Matthew Pate b. 20 Sep 1785 TN md Mary Meek - they were in Washington Co, IL until 1850's Maybe this will help Jinks
thanks, Sheridan......do you have any clue as to WHO Matthew's parents are or 'could be'?.....it does not have to be written in cement, just a clue is what I am looking for. Does anyone have any info. on a Sabra Pate (female) who descended through Thoroughgood Pate of NC?
I would appreciate hearing from any PATE Researcher, who has a Mathew or Matthew PATE placed in their branch, prior to the 1800s. Exact identification, time and place is not an issue right now. Thanks in advance..... Carol

Lindy and list - the GA Confederate Pension Files show B F Pate srv Co D 8th GA, filed for a pension from Wilkinson Co, GA He also witnessed for a B F Morgan of Laurens Co, GA Does anyone have access to the GA Pension records?? Sometimes these pension records are a goldmine of info. Jinks
Jinks, THANKS for pointing out the difference. I had only made the note of the John Taylor household & didn't write down its members when I looked at the census. With Delann in her father's household in 1870, the 1867 marriage date has to be an error. One other thing about Benjamin F. Pate. I have him on the 1863/1864 Joe Brown Census still in Twiggs Co. 21st Senatorial Dist GA Militia enrollment dist #356 listed as Benjamin "P" Pate, age 16 yrs 7 mo, b GA. This is the correct district for Benjamin F Pate, s/o Samuel. A search of the Wilkinson Co Ga military records online at Rootsweb-archives yields a Benjamin F Pate, Co D 8th Regt GA Militia Wilkinson Co. I don't have the dates for this service but it could have occurred late in the war. Lindy - notice that in 1870 Wilkinson Co, GA Delana Taylor age 24 is still living with her parents, John Taylor & Amsa -- so the Martha, evidently wife of this Benjamin would not be one and the same -- Could the date of 1867 for marriage of Benjamin & Delana Taylor be in error?? Thanks Joel, I'm not questioning whether or not Samuel Pate had a son named Benamin F Pate, but whether or not the Benjamin Pate listed on Wilkinson Co GA 1870 is the same Ben F Pate as on the 1880 Wilkinson Co GA. I have reliable proof that Samuel Pate had son Benjamin F Pate b abt 1847, although I have temporarily lost the exact date of the newspaper. Abt 1851. Union Recorder. Twiggs Co GA. Lewis Soloman, ordinary applies for letters of guardianship on estate of Nancy J, Isaac, Martha M, Elijah, and Benjamin F, minor heirs of Samuel Pate, dec'd. Benjamin F Pate is on 1850 Census Twiggs Co GA age 3 in Elizabeth Pate (assumed to be his mother) household along with the same siblings listed as minor heirs of Samuel Pate in the Union Recorder notice; 1860 Census Twiggs Co GA age 13 in Eli S Griffin household along with brother Elijah. If the 1870/1880 Wilkinson Co GA censuses are of the same Benjamin Pate, then he must have had another child, Samuel Pate b c1869, and his wife must have had an expanded name including Martha (if the 1867 marriage date to Amsey Delaney Taylor is correct.) Thanks for the descendants. I notice in doing a search for Annie Pate Lavender (d/o Benjamin F Pate), there is a posting to the Lavender rootsweb board 30 Dec 2000 by Angela Kennedy akenn10527@aol.com who is stating that she has a picture of John Lavender, wife Annie Pate & daughter Irene of Wilkinson Co GA. I will look for an obituary for Benjamin F Pate if I can find his death date. Lindy John Ben Pate attributes Benjamin F Pate Sr b July 1848 to Samuel Pate and 2nd ux Susan Fort. Seems reasonable as John Ben Pate and Benjamin F Pate Sr b 1848 were in the same central GA area at essentially the same time. See insert following your inquiry. Carol, Jesse Pate who was born in Buncombe Co. NC (now Yancey) in 1820 was my great-grandfather. Jesse Pate spent most of his adult life in Cherokee County, NC. He was the son of John PATE (aka RANDOLPH) and Fanny Barrett. The Internet is full of erroneous information on this entire family line. One individual began calling him "Bee Log," even though he lived at Jack's Creek, and now it is perpetuated at the speed of "copy & paste." Likewise, another of the myths perpetuated about John is that he was an illegitimate child--his father was a BAKER and mother a RANDOLPH. There is no PROOF that can substantiate that claim. In John PATE's (aka RANDOLPH) War of 1812 pension file is an affidavit stating that John PATE was also known throughout the county as John RANDOLPH "...after the name of his step-father." Documented information on this John PATE shows: 1. He married Fanny Barrett on June 3, 1808 at "Bee Tree Church" - War 1812 Pension File 2 He was enumerated, as John PATE, in the 1830, 1850, 1860, and 1870 census. 3. He served in the War of 1812 as John RANDOLPH for which he received Land Warrants. 4. As John PATE he was one of the oldest volunteers in the C.S.A. having enlisted at the age of 75 - Compiled Service Records of NC. 5. He was alive on 9 Aug 1872 - War 1812 Pension File My personal opinion of much of the Genealogical information available on the Internet - it isn't worth the paper it's written on. If no sources are listed-discard it. If sources are listed-check it. Over the years I have found that it is easier to climb a brick wall than to go on a wild goose chase. Carol: First it was not my intent to knock the skates out from under you. Your enthusiasm and diligence in searching for your roots is commendable. My effort was to help you avoid some pitfalls and traps that I and others have already fallen into and had to dig our way out of. Unfortunately there was a significant bit of inaccurate material published in the first 30 years of the last century. That sounds odd, but 1900 to 1930 was in the last century. The inaccurate material slowly spread until the advent of the computer and then the internet. I don't need to tell you how quickly you can spread information or misinformation these days. I am not familiar with the Fast-Crabbe correspondence of 1934-1966, but it does sound very much like the 1917 material published by John Ben Pate. You are wise to treat such material as searching guide. If you can not point to reliable sources and find sound, logical deductions or conclusions, you may wish to move with caution and to warn others of you doubts. Where do you go from here? By all means keep trying, digging, asking and sharing. Keep good notes on your documentation and sources. Look at material relating to allied families. You mentioned an Edwards line. Dig a bit in their turf. Who knows, you might run across an Edwards Bible with lots of Pate names in it. Use the census resources available. Cautiously use internet resources. Good (reliable) internet resources will cite page, chapter and book (sometimes even the library). Use World Connect. Carefully discern the best publications. The copy cats are often very obvious. Browse the PATE-L archives. There was a good exchange on William Riley Pate. The repetition of names across generations can be useful in proving lineage. The more unusual the name the better. A note of caution about names- they can jump across sibling lines. Rework some of your "known" facts. Take a "known" fact and prove it up for yourself. Look at migratory patterns. Look for place names in one area that were taken from other areas. Use other researchers' reports, but with caution. Above all keep digging and sharing. Joel
