Marvin: On 8 Jan 1815 forces under Major General Andrew Jackson defeated British forces in the Battle of New Orleans. In 1818 many of the troops who were with Jackson in New Orleans rejoined him in a successful campaign to capture Florida. Jackson served as military commissioner-governor of Florida from 10 March 1821 to 31 Dec 1821. In 1821 Jackson designated lands, in the Territory of Florida, east of the Suwannee River to be St Johns County and lands to the west to be Escambia County. East and West Florida would be designations that remained for a significant amount of time. If you have a map of Florida you will note that the Suwannee enters Florida near the same area that Interstate-75 enters the state. The Suwannee flows generally south to the Gulf of Mexico, meandering to the West and then back to the East until it enters the Gulf North of Cedar Key. In 1821 there was a Territorial census taken in Florida. There was a Jeremiah Pate enumerated in East Florida. This MAY have been Jeremiah Pate 1801-1885. Unfortunately there are no images of this census and nothing more than index information exists today. This puts Jeremiah a bit to the east of the counties in Florida which would later be contiguous to Geneva Co AL, however it does put a man named Jeremiah Pate in Florida, in the appropriate time period and in the approximate area. Joel, Last year you posted several Pate Indexes from the 1930 Census from FL, GA and AL. I thought I had saved those in a file, but I have lost the ones from FL and AL. Is there a way you might be able to post those again. I still have the ones from GA and you posted those on June 24, 2002. Thanks Marvin Williams

Does anyone know of any PATE males who have participated in genealogical DNA testing projects? Lindy: Yes, Redding Pate did have a LWT. In fact I have two records for a will for him. Both are recorded in Washington Co GA. First at Book A, Page 49 (I have no date on this one) and second at Book B, Page 209 dated 9 Apr 1839. The latter may be a continuation of the former. Robert W Pate witnessed a LWT of an Andrew Dillon made 5 Nov 1823, perhaps in Columbia Co, and probated 9 Jan 1824 in Jefferson Co GA. Little probative value here other than confirmation that Robert W Pate was in the area in 1823-24. I'm trying to locate [oh the sins of our early days in genealogy) my source references on these. If I locate it, it would be a good one to see if any mention of Green B Burney is made. Joel
Lindy: Sorry, should have checked before I responded. I do have some thing on Robert W Pate. He married Hannah Edmonds in Jefferson Co GA in Apr 1825. He was enumerated in the 1830 census of Jefferson Co GA. Hannah Edmonds Pate married Washington Belcher in Jul 1832. I would concluded that Robert W Pate was deceased prior to 1832 a therefore PERHAPS be a candidate for the "R. Pate, dec'd" in the case you are looking at. Where this Robert W Pate came from I have nothing on. Lindy: The only "R" Pate names in the 1830 GA census were Redding Pate in Washington Co and Robert W Pate in Jefferson Co. Redding Pate died in 1836 and MAY have had holdings down through middle GA. Robert W Pate I have nothing on. The LDS index has a fistful of Green B Burney records in GA in the Oconee-Ocmulgee River area. One interesting one is in Wilkinson Co near were Samuel's son Ben F Pate Sr settled. Margaret: I think the Jeremiah Pate you are looking for is Jeremiah Pate b 1 May 1801 TN d 30 Mar 1885 AL. He is buried at Mt Gilead Church Cemetery in AL. Part of the cemetery is in Geneva Co AL and part is in Houston Co. This Jeremiah Pate was one of the youngest to serve with Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. The Battle of New Orleans was 1814. Before Andrew Jackson was President of the United States he was Governor of the Territory of Florida. Jackson County and the City of Jacksonville in FL are named in his honor. He, and perhaps officers and soldiers under him were given land grants in Florida for their service. There is no census evidence that Jeremiah Pate 1801-1885 was in Florida. There MAY be some BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land grant information showing him in Florida. I'd have to research this point. For the most part he was in what is now Geneva Co AL. He was enumerated in the 1840 census of Dale Co AL, page 13; in the 1850 census of Dale Co AL, page 220, the 1860 census of Dale Co AL, page 708, Newton PO, site 1403/1403; 1870 census of Geneva Co AL, page 596, Geneva PO, site 362; and 1880 census of Geneva co AL, page 662, Geneva PO, site 210/212. Jeremiah Pate married twice; 1 Martha Tindell ca 1823 2 Melinda A E Stewart 20 Mar 1859 Marvin Williams [shwillms@mindspring.com] has done a substantial amount of research on this line. Joel

They appear in the 1870 census of Lauderdale Co TN and have: Elisha b ca 1857 Sarah b ca 1858 Sebett (m) b ca 1863 Louisa b ca 1869 Henry and Sibba appear in the 1900 census of Polk Co AR with no others in the household. Sibba is noted as having had 11 children, 6 of whom were alive at the census time. Anyone have information on this couple? Joel
Margaret Lindly Asked- Does anyone have any information on Jeremiah Pate born 1801 TN. He ends up in Florida.
Dot Barnum posted a URL that bears repeating; http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/lincoln/churches/goshen.txt This site has an excellent history of Goshen Church, which was and still is in Lincoln Co GA. Pate families from the Carolinas settled in Lincoln Co GA, on or near a stream known as Soap Creek. This church history is almost required reading if you trace your Pate lineage to James M Pate of Fayette Co GA (Coosa Cousins) or if you trace back to the Charles R Pate line of Morgan Co GA, Tuscaloosa/Pickens/Walker Co AL, Itawamba Co MS and points in TX, AR, MO and OK. One can't help but wonder what dear cousin Phoebe did to get herself excluded. Excellent reading, especially if you also read Pate-L archives material on the early GA Land Lotteries and 1796-1810 GA tax rolls.

In the 1880 census of Pottawatomie Co KS there seems to four Pate children who were orphaned and assigned to three different families in the Wamego and Blue Townships- With a Ponders family- [recorded 12 Jun 1880] Rusha Pate 3 W/F "taken into family" KS/TN/TN 1877 With a Murphy family- [recorded 14 Jun 1880] Ellen Pate 6 W/F Boarder TN/TN/TN 1874 James Pate 4 W/M Boarder KS/TN/TN 1876 With a Lyman family-[recorded 14 Jun 1880] Louie Pate 1 W/F Boarder KS/TN/TN 1879 The parents were apparently from TN and relocated from TN to KS about 1875 Donna Allen located a grave in Pottawatomie Co, St George Cemetery, for Elizabeth Pate 11 May 1850-11 Apr 1880, that MAY fit into this puzzle. She died about 2 months prior to the census enumeration of these children. She was about age 29y 11m and easily with the age range to be the mother of these four children. Questions: Who were the parents of these children? What became of these children? Is Louie Pate also the L J Pate or Lula Pate who married, ca 1894, Harrison J Atchley, son of John P and Nancy Atchley of Sevier Co TN? Are the marriage records for Sevier Co TN 1890 - 1900 available?
