    3. Hi Joel - Concerning your reply of Nov. 2003. There have been so many if's in finding my grandfather Robert H. Pate. If anyone could check records for Kansas City Missouri, and/or Kansas City Illinois after 1930 either marriage or death or any other type record it would really help me eliminate that area. As to his work I just don't know what he could do since my father was so young when he left. I do know that my father W.B. Pate and his brother Raymond did some railroad work as laborers when they were in their teens. Thank You for having this venue for all of us looking into our past. 3. Joel - the answer to some of your questions -- Deed records of Henry Co, AL - DB L, p 506 dated 11 Jan 1848 list the Legatees of Estate of William Pate, dec'd - signed by John Pate, Aaron Pate, Lovet Hinton, Charles Hulsey, William Shaw, William Pate, Thomas Pate and 7 children of Rebecca Pate & Jennings Hulsey. The maiden name of Mary, 2nd wife of John Pate is not known -- she md after John Pate died to John W Huff on 15 Feb 1860 in St Clair Co, AL. The children of John Pate, by his first and second marriage, are listed in his Will dated 15 Aug 1855 in St Clair Co, AL Says his 7 oldest children live outside state of AL and 3 youngest live with Mother, Mary in St Clair Co, AL. John Pate evidently went to Texas sometime before Oct 1837 -- Angelina Co, TX DB P, p 621 shows he patented 1,280 ac of land - proved he arrived in the Republic prior to 1 Oct 1837 and is a married man and entitled to 1,280 ac. There are several law suits over this land by the children of his first marriage - Part of the land was in Angelina Co and part in Jasper Co, TX - wish I had the records from Jasper Co - it may shed some more light on this family. 1. [PATE GENEALOGY] Samuel Pate/d Twiggs Co GA bef 20 July 1848

    3. Joel's reference to the Cherokee Land lottery reminded me of some information I sent to Pate-L a long time ago about land Samuel Pate owned at the time of his death in Twiggs Co GA. A notice in the Georgia Journal indicated Samuel Pate's administrator selling land in Murray county but did not give section number. When looking this up in the original land lottery books I looked in the WRONG section and later sent the information to Pate-L. After consulting Smith's 1838 book on the Cherokee Land Lottery containing maps showing which section became Murray Co, etc, I should have looked in Sec 3 instead of Sec 2. However, Smith's 1838 book gives the original drawer of the land as Rebecca Connel (wid) and the original microfilm DEFINITELY says "Caudle." 9 May 1849. Georgia Journal. Adm'r sale, Aug 1849, Spring Place, Murray Co Ga; James Averett adm'r Samuel Pate; undivided hf #182 8th dist; by order of Inferior court, Twiggs Co GA [1832 LAND LOTTERY: #182, SEC 3 DIST 8 WAS GRANTED TO REBECCA CAUDLE (WID) WILL'S DIST, TWIGGS CO & GRANTED TO HER 11 MAY 1836 [NOTE THAT PREVIOUS ABSTRACT WAS WRONG--I HAD LOOKED UP WRONG SECTION] [GDAH 286/49] **** ALSO NOTE THAT THE ADJOINING LOT #183, 8TH DIST, 3RD SECTION CHEROKEE CO WAS DRAWN BY JOSEPH MARTIN, WILL'S DIST, TWIGGS CO & GRANTED TO HIM 22 NOV 1832--JOSEPH MARTIN HAD LAND IN TWIGGS COUNTY ADJOINING SAMUEL PATE ON 1833 TAX DIGEST I think this information is important to Samuel Pate researchers because of the land being "undivided" at the time of Samuel Pate's death. Samuel Pate acquired this land sometime between Rebecca Caudle's 11 May 1836 grant and his death prior to 20 July 1848. According to the 1833 Tax Digest Twiggs Co GA Capt FULGHAM'S Dist (was Will's Dist in 1830) PATE, SAMUEL 202 1/2 acres/ 800 acres pine/Twiggs/ adj. MYRICK/ big Sandy Creek MARTIN, JOSEPH 3 slaves/ 40 acres/ 180 acres pine/Twiggs & others/ adj PATE/big Sandy Creek [NOTE: Joseph Martin's "40 acres" is probably the 40 acres granted to Joseph Martin Wills dist Twiggs Co #183 8th dist 3rd Sec Cherokee county 22 Nov 1832; This 40 acres joins the 40 acres granted to Rebecca Caudle (wid) Wills Dist Twiggs Co #182, 8th dist 3rd sec Cherokee county 11 May 1836 (Drawn by her 1832)] Another point of interest is the fact that in Sept 1839, Samuel Pate is serving as admnistrator of Holliday H Harrell. In 1837 JOSEPH MARTIN had been serving as the administrator of the same person. Baldwin Co Ga Newspaper Clippings Vol III 1837-1839, Tad Evans. p299 3 Sept 1839 GA/Twiggs Co: Wbs at ct house door in sd count 1st Tue Dec nx, all property belonging to estate of HOLLIDAY H HARRALL, late of sd co dec'd. Sold to benefit heirs & creditors of sd estate. (s) SAMUEL PATE Adm. [p86 & 94... JOSEPH MARTIN as administrator of HOLLIDAY H. HARRALL 24 Oct 1837] Some big unanswered questions are were Samuel Pate and Joseph Martin related in any way or were they just neighbors and friends? Is there any significance to them both serving as admnistrators of Holliday H Harrall? When, how, why did Samuel Pate acquire the Cherokee (now Murray Co) land formerly owned by Rebecca Caudle (wid) and who was Rebecca Caudle anyway? Who was the co-owner of the land at the time of Samuel Pate's death? If anyone should ever find any of these answers, please contact me. Sorry for posting the previous incorrect information to the list, Lindy Hard

My first inclination was that Evelyn was Eveline Robertson Pate because of the similarity of the name. Eveline was the second wife of George Washington Pate. Further investigation shows: Ramseytown Township, Yancey County, North Carolina, Supervisor District #9, Enumeration District# 128. Visit # 201, Household # 203, Enumerated on 13 & 14 June 1900 by W. M. McIntosh Pate, George, Head, Male, June 1823, 76, married 29 years, NC/NC/NC Pate, Eveline, Wife, Female, May 1851, 49, married 29 years, NC/NC/NC, mother of 5 with 3 living. The numbers in the 1900 census are a reasonably close match. The loss of the 1890 census makes this a tough one for me. I cannot find either Evelyn Pate or Lucinda Pate in or near Yancey County in 1880. I did find a Lucinda Peid, born about 1871, in Beaufort, North Carolina, however she is of a different race. William Wilson creates another set of problems that do not need to be addressed here. Am I overlooking something? Does anyone know who Evelyn Pate is or her maiden name. Does anyone have other ideas? 1. [PATE GENEALOGY] PatericK Jefferson Pate b 1826 Washington Co GA
    2. Joel Pate
    3. BACKGROUND: Patrick Jefferson Pate was born 4 Oct 1826 probably in Washington Co GA. He was the son of John W Pate and Charity (Cherry) Whitfield. Patrick Jefferson Pate married Martha Ann Moye 13 Mar 1847 in Washington Co GA Their children Elizabeth Rebecca Pate b 4 Sep 1848 James Kendrick Pate b 26 Nov 1850 Cherry Jones Pate 21 Nov 1852 Patrick Jefferson Pate, his wife Martha Ann Moye Pate and daughter Elizabeth Rebecca Pate were enumerated in the 1850 census of Washington Co GA. Some time after the 1850 census Patrick Jefferson Pate and family relocated to the Ringgold, Catoosa Co., GA area. Patrick Jefferson Pate apparently died in Catoosa Co., GA and his widow and children returned to Washington Co. On 18 Oct 1855 his widow, Martha Ann Moye Pate, married Harris A. Brantley in Washington Co GA. Elizabeth Rebecca Pate and Cherry Jones Pate were incorrectly enumerated as Brantley in the 1860 census of Washington Co GA. The 1832 Gold Lottery of Georgia distributed 40 acre lots in the Cherokee land cession in north west GA. This very large county (Cherokee) was subsequently divided into a number of counties. In 1853 Catoosa County GA was created from Walker and Whitfield counties in the old Cherokee Co area.. John W. Pate, the father of Patrick Jefferson Pate won a lot in the 1832 Gold Land Lottery. He won Lot 688, District 17, Section 3. Redding Pate, and uncle of Patrick Jefferson Pate, also won a lot in the 1832 Gold Land Lottery. He won lot 560, District 15, Section 2. QUESTIONS: Where is Patrick Jefferson Pate buried? Is there a record of his death? What drew him to Catoosa Co GA? Did John W Pate and Redding Pate ever perfect title to the lots they won in the 1832 Gold Land Lottery? If so, what if any, role did Patrick Jefferson Pate play in this land transaction? Where were these lots?

Meredith: You may find some of your answers at the Madison County Records Center http://www.co.madison.al.us/mcrc/ I seem to recall reading that the marriage of Zachariah Rucker was recorded as Burke A compiler named Dorothy Scott Johnson did a two-volume cemetery survey for about half the county. The Library of Congress profile -- LCCN 78-111526 Cemeteries of Madison County, Alabama : a record of the tombstone inscriptions in all known white cemeteries in the west half of Madison County, Alabama, except Memory Garden / by Dorothy Scott Johnson. Huntsville, AL There may be other, more recent and more inclusive, studies, but I've not run across them. The Huntsville-Madison County Library in Huntsville, which you can not do justice to in two hours, has a very large genealogical section. http://www.hpl.lib.al.us/ Check out their "Heritage Room". If you are looking for Pate families in this area, do not skip Giles Co TN, which adjoins Madison Co AL. Look especially close at an area in Giles Co TN known as Cold Water Creek. Some of the Pate families in Giles Co TN MAY have ties back to VA and down to Monroe Co MS and back to Tuscaloosa and Pickens Co AL. Note the MAY have.
