Joel, Sorry it has been so long in responding. I have been on vacation for close to a month. Are you the Joel who is the expert on our Pate genealogy along with Jinks Pate Lee? I would love to share our families genealogy. Do I use a certain or special program to do it. Please let me know. I'd be glad to work on it and share everything I know. Thanks Bud Duane Pate, SLC, Ut

Thank you, Tom Menees ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On 29 Jun 2004 I posted the following reply. Joel ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Your Charles Wesley Pate 1868-1947 PERHAPS was the son of William Nathan Pate and Mary Selvidge of Trenton PO, Gibson Co TN. William Nathan Pate and Mary F Selvidge married 9 Oct 1867 in Gibson Co TN You may wish to scan the 1870 census of Gibson Co TN, page 267, Trenton PO, site 23/23. W N Pate 34 TN 1836 Mary Pate 27 TN 1843 Charles Pate 2 TN 1868 William Nathan Pate PROBABLY died before the 1880 census was taken. His widow and children appear to have been enumerated in the 1880 census. In my OPINION Charles Wesley Pate, between 1880 and 1900, relocated to Davidson Co TN and married about 1897. You may wish to scan the 1900 census Davidson Co TN, page 227A, Enumeration district 83, sheet 2, Nashville, site 20/23, 305 North High Street. Enumerated in the household were Thomas MENCES 76 W/M Head MD Physician b TN Jun 1823 Mary MENCES 65 W/F Wife MD b TN Jun 1834 (Married 34y 1/1 children) Three boarders Charles W PATE 32 W/M MD Commission Agent b TN Apr 1868 Mary E PATE 27 W/F MD b TN Dec 1873 (Married 3y 1/1 children) Mary M Pate 1 W/F SGL b TN Jul 1898 Two domestics (record is almost illegible) Sallie Walters Housekeeper Rachel McGown Servant This household was indexed as MENCES, however a closer examination of the microfilm record reflects that the name PERHAPS was MENEES Notes: 1/1 children indicates that the women had one live birth and that child was alive at the time of the census. Charles W Pate APPARENTLY married about 1897 in Nashville, Davidson Co, TN. An Examination of the marriage records of Davidson Co for that time period would be useful. ALSO Another researcher proffers that Charles W Pate was born 17 Apr 1868 to Bolen Green Pate and his wife Mary A Williams of Gibson and later Dyer Co TN You may wish to go to the World Connect Site- http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ and search for Pate, Charles b 1868. The several returns will include Charles Wesley Pate b 17 Apr 1868. You may also use the search screen at World Connect to "jump" directly to the data base. Use the database name -- dyeralsups. You may wish to examine the 1870 census of Gibson Co TN page 256, Quincy PO, site 22/22, household of Bowling Pate. There was not a Charles Pate enumerated in this household. Also you may wish to examine the 1880 census of Dyer Co TN, page 22, Enumeration district 5, sheet 19, Civil district 19, site 176/176, household of B G Pate. There was a Charles Pate age 13 enumerated in this household. I, of course, THINK that my analysis is correct, BUT it may not be. Perhaps the researcher who posted the -dyeralsups- database has a bible or other record that I am not aware of. If you develop further information on this, please share it. end
Thanks for your response. I know Sam and he is a terrific man. And you are so right, I have discovered cousins I never knew I had. These are people I went to school with and never knew they were related to me back then. Thanks again. Judith P. Gentry
Judith: It is through asking and sharing that we all learn more about our ancestors. Sam Pait Sr is the "go to" man for our Bladen Co NC cousins who use the Pait spelling. He is the one who deserves the thanks for his years of finding and sharing. We frequently hit "brick walls" in this endeavor. If you share the problem you will find cousins you did not know about and you may find the answer to your problem. Post you FGS (family group sheet), post your descendants chart and post you questions to Pate-L and see what I mean. I concur. Guess my subject line should have been "Pate-Fitzgerald-Harris TX" So Aunt Francis was aunt by marriage rather than Fitzgerald blood. Fair enough. All of this points out the value of using allied surnames to work your way around a brick wall. There is a posting by a Fitzgerald researcher on the PATE venue at GenForum that gives rise to this. Sorry, Joel, but I have to disagree with you about the relationship of Joseph F. Pate and the Harris family. Joseph F. Pate was very likely the brother of Amanda Pate who lived with Francis C. Fitzgerald. I believe that Francis Caroline Harris Fitzgerald was the widow of Jackson J. Fitzgerald (the 17 year old on the 1850 San Augustine County census you cite below). There is a cluster of Fitzgerald, Pate and Harris family members in Grayson County, TX in 1880 (which you identified a couple of years ago and for which I will be eternally grateful). I am pretty sure that Robert Harris (with whom Joseph was living) is a brother of Frances Harris Fitzgerald. Grayson County deeds indicate that Robert Harris' wife's maiden name was LOW. She was the daughter of Henry and Mary Jane LOW. Joseph Francis did have a sister Sarah E., but she was born in TX in 1862. I have no idea what happened to her. Robert Harris' wife was born in Illinois in 1856. Let me know if you can see problems with the above. Some of it is circumstantial I know. But I do have the list of Joseph's siblings names from a family Bible and a tintype of the elder Jackson Fitzgerald turned up in Joseph's daughter's estate sale. Pacia could come from a shortened form of pacificus, such as pacis or pax, meaning peace or rest. Then again, it might not. Could be just what someone wrote down that stuck. Joe Hazel
