    3. Joe I would estimate that there are about 150 burial sites in Marlboro Co SC with grave markers. About half have been surveyed and the inventories are on line. Go to http://www.usgenweb.org/ Click on South Carolina Click on Marlboro Click on Cemeteries "A-H" etc I can tell you that I have "mined" this resource and did not find Margaret Adams Pate. However, there are cemeteries named for the Adams Family. The other however- these list are being updated frequently. Do as much "cemetery walking" as you can with your keyboard and mouse. 3. Horace, On a recent trip to Marlboro Co., SC in search of my GG-grandfather's grave I resolved with some certainty the order of marriages for Harris (1825) Pate. I earlier speculated that Sarah Odom was his first wife, and was uncertain about the other two as well. As revealed by gravestone: Mary F. 2 Wife of Harris Pate and daughter of Phillip & Mary Odom Born Dec. 18, 1842 Died Sept. 13, 1882 -- Sarah Jane Wife of Harris Pate Born Feb. 23, 1833 Died Aug. 6, 1911 -- Sarah Jane is buried next to Harris. Mary F. and two of her children, previously unknown to me and not Henry or Edward, are buried in a different part of the yard. Further, based on material and design, the gravestone of Mary F. and the children are older than those of Harris and Sarah. When I find Margaret, I'll post the transcription. As Joel suggests, her grave may be unmarked. -- ------------------ Joseph Harris Scarborough http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=jhscarborough http://home.earthlink.net/~jhscarborough/ancestry/

    3. Joel, Thanks for tips, Mary's middle name, and the lesson in phrasing questions carefully. So let me rephrase the question, does anyone know which cemetery in Marlboro Co., SC Margaret Adams Pate is buried? I was hoping someone might 'know' so I could narrow the search field in Marlboro county cotton fields this Labor Day weekend. On August 21 I spent an hour in each of five cemeteries there, hence the reason for the posting. The net result was the graves of Harris and his second and third wives and a twenty month old daughter. Actually, Harris Pate and his families must have lived closer to Boykin than they did Adamsville. Though enumerated in the Adamsville District the burial site is a number of miles from Adamsville and further still from those of his brothers and sisters. It is unlikely, in 1904 (death of Harris Pate), or 1882 (death of Mary F.), that they would have been carried far from the homestead for burial. Guess I need to do some deed research to narrow that down further. I'll post my findings, if any, after my journey. --Joe -- ------------------ Joseph 'Joe' Scarborough http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=jhscarborough http://home.earthlink.net/~jhscarborough/ancestry/

    3. I just moved to Lees Summit, MO and of course being the twisted genealogist I am it was rainy today so I decided to drive through cemeteries. I was driving through the Historical Cemetery in Lees Summit, MO (Jackson County) and came upon these PATE stone. I don't believe it is any of my clan, but would love to share this with someone whose line it is. Email me and I'll send you the photo's. 3. Joe: Some speculation-- Margaret Adams Pate died between Jun 1865 (birth of son Claudius B Pate) and Jun 1869 (conception of Henry Pate b Mar 1870). Henry Pate being the son of Harris Pate and his second wife Mary (Francis) Odom. The Harris Pate family was well established in the Adamsville Crossroads-Bennettville area in Marlboro Co SC as evidenced by the 1860 and 1870 census records. It would stand to reason that Margaret Adams Pate is buried somewhere in Marlboro Co SC. Her Adams and Newton families were in that area so there would have been no reason to take her outside the area for burial. My best GUESS is that she is buried in an unmarked grave, perhaps in an Adams plot, at some local church in the Adamsville area. If you knew what church Harris Pate attended 1860-1870, it might be helpful. 3. Jinks, The Pates in the 12th Civil District were not the same as the Pates in the 2nd CD. I don't know how to explain the difference, except that my Pates were from the area of the 12 CD and the Ala. Pates were in the 2nd CD. There was a Stephen Pate in my area and also a Stephen Pate in the area of the 2nd CD. I do not think they were one and the same. Margaret Pate Finley

    3. Carol - the Rutha/Annie Pate who md George R Ennis in Massac Co, IL is evidently from the Dyer Co, TN Pate line -- There is a deed record dated 13 Dec 1866, Bk N, p 474 in Dyer Co, TN Elizabeth W Pate & REBECCA A Ennis & George Ennis of Massac Co, IL deed to John P Johns -- Our entire interest in tract of land heretofore belonging to James Pate -- in 12th Civil District As near as I can figure out, Elizabeth W Pate is Rebecca/Rutha's mother and wife of James Pate. James Pate APPEARS to be the son of Stephen Pate who died in 1817 in Madison Co, AL - The Will of Stephen Pate dated 28 Apr 1817 gives land to his son, James Pate and Son-in-law, James Milikin -- (married Polly Pate) - the will also mentions a wife (not named) and five younger children (also not named) Another of those "wouldn't it have been nice if they had named them" Jinks

    3. Hi Jinks... This writing entered and submitted by Corinne Fulkerson for (Pope County Historical Society) is one of many biographies that were brought together and published in 1986 - the first of three volumes (others published later). I copied it exactly as it appears, hopefully with no mistakes. But I think it is apparent that his biological mother married Mr. WILSON in Hardin County. YES, I wish at least that we could glean his mother's maiden name. I will try to look further for a WILSON marriage in Hardin County. It would be better if I could dig further and try to find the maiden name of Lewis PATE's wife, who is biologically his Aunt. So far, I have found no PATE marriages in Pope County between 1813-1897. However, there are two early marriage records for Massac County, IL which are probably not related to the subject: Joseph B. PATE, marr to Martha COLE, Jan 20, 1865, pg. #424 Rutha A. PATE, marr to George R. ENNIS, May 13, 1866, Pg. #536 ---------from "THE PROMULGATOR, (Massac County) Thursday, May 17, 1866. Vol. 1, No. 30: "MARRIED: In this city on last Sunday morning, the 13th inst., at the residence of Parson ANDREW's, by the Rev. W.H. SCOTT, George ENNIS to Miss Annie PATE. *The bio-article states specifically that James was born in Jasper Co, KY; but the 1880 Census shows IA - Iowa? (or could it be Indiana?). *The bio-article says that his "stepmother" (is this his biological mother or adopted mother?) remarried "after his stepfather died.". It seems that the "stepmother" is Lewis PATE's wife, or James' biological Aunt. From what I can see, Roddie (1877) is a male, son of James and Myra, who eventually moved to Seattle and married a second time there. Addie , daughter in law to James and Myra, is Addie CHRISMAN, daughter of John W. Chrisman and Emma Santy, who marr. Allen L. Pate. The article says they had "three children" : Roddie 1877, Homer 1888, and Karl 1886....Allen L. was b.. abt 1876, but he apparently was with Nathaniel and Cirena Henderson in Vermillion County, IL with his parents, James and Myra, during the 1880 Census. ---In the 1900 Pope County, IL Federal Census, Grand Pier Precinct, ED#61: household 42/42 PATE, James May 1854, 46, 23 yrs marr. KY/IN/IN Farmer Myra (3 ch/3 living), Nov 1861, 38, 23 yrs mar, IL/NC/VA Homer G., Son, Nov 1880, 19, IL/KY/IL Farm Labor Karl, son, Aug 1886, 13, IL/KY/IL Farm Labor Adda (2 ch/ 1 liv), DLaw, March 1878, 22, marr. 2 yrs, IL/KY/OH Halean L., GDau, Oct 1899, 7/12 (7 mos), IL/IL/IL * I have no idea why Allen is not listed - could he have been in military service? In the Pope County Marriage Records Books: (Book Register A-1, pg. 4, #2336) - 1st marr for both on June 01, 1898 PATES/PATE, Allen L., age 22, b. Danville, IL, residing Herod, Pope Co, IL, Farmer ............PATES, Milton James and HENDERSON, Myram married to: CHRISMAN, Addie, age 21, b. Pope Co, IL, residing Herod, Pope Co, IL .............CHRISMAN, John William and SANTY, Emma by I.M. Blanchard, M.G.; witness: Florence Santy & E.A.T. Carter at Mrs. Leona Santy's res., Herod, Pope Co, IL. Yes, it says that his stepfather was a harness maker and that James followed that trade. Nice to hear from you...... 3. Carol - thanks for posting the info on James M Pate - since I have connections to the Danville, IL Pate's just wondered where he might fit in, or if anyone else may have information on him. Wouldn't it have been nice if they had given the names of his stepfather and his mother's sister, etc. I found him in 1880 Vermilion Co, IL Nathaniel Henderson age 71 - harness maker b. KY/IN/IN Myra Pate age 38, b. IL/NC/VA (they have been married 23 yrs, had 3 children/3 still living) Homer G Pate age 19 - son Karl Pate age 13 - son Addie Pate age 22 - dau in law (md 2 yrs/1/1) Harlean L Pate age 7 mos - grand dau Some time back you posted the marriage record of Allen L Pate b. 1 Sep 1879, son of Milton James Pates and Myram Henderson married 1 Jun 1898 Addie Chrisman, dau of John Wm Chrisman & Emma Santy So Addie must be Allen L Pate's wife - but where is he? Or could he be the child listed as Roddie?? It shows Roddie had a dau, Halene -- Jinks
