Ellen: Jinks was kind enough to recheck the Ingmire books on Texas marriages. The correct marriage year for Joanna Pate and Virgil Stewart Maddox is 1879 NOT 1864 as I had earlier written. Specifically "J. A. Pate married Virgil S Maddox in McLennan Co TX 27 Aug 1879, officiating was Elder J M Wright (sounds Presbyterian). So Nora B Maddox age 12 b KY was definitely the child of a first wife of Virgil Stewart Maddox. Since Nora was b in KY and her father and mother probably married in KY. I don't know where I got the date 8 Dec 1864 for a marriage date for Virgil Stewart Maddox. It MAY PERHAPS be for his first marriage. Joel
Joel, I am sending some notes that came from material found when my mother-in-law died. "Joann Pate was born in Cobden Ill. Had one brother Bissell Pate, a half brother ?. A half sister Mary Kathrine Page. Joann's stepfather was Charlie Page." Now the spelling of some names may differ but at least this provides a clue for our use. Also the following notes were on the Virgil Stewart Maddox, husband of Johanna Pate. "Virgil Maddox with 2 brothers Harrison and Sylvester and daughter Nora moved to Ft Scott or Cherryvale Kan. About 1879 after the death of his wife in KY. He lived in Kan. 9 years--Sylvester died in Kan. Harrison went back to KY. 2 Sisters remained in KY. (Harrison and Sylvester were twins)--Virgil met and married Joann Pate, a school teacher, about 1879--moved to Fannin Co Tex same year--moved to Wise Co about 1884--moved to Indian Teritory, near Ardmore 1888. (Virgil can be found in the 1880 census in Montgomery Co, KS) I believe that the mother of Nora B. Maddox died in KY or at least in that area as Virgil was born in Beaver Dam, Ohio KY and that is where is family was living. A lot of this is still to be proven but it gives a road map to follow. thanks for the list and support of Pate genealogy. ellen >

Thanks to the excellent help from subscriber Deborah jscomtc@msn.com I was able to obtain a copy of the PATE material in the following book. "A History of the Fowler Family of Southeastern North Carolina." Complied and Published by: Richard Gildart Fowler Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN): 87-401578 Matilda Amanda Pate b 22 Dec 1823 Butler Co AL, married Rufus Alexander Fowler about 1840 in Butler Co AL and died 6 Jan 1862, Smyrna, Milam Co TX. The material has been transcribe and is included below. One note of caution. There was not an Alexander Pate enumerated in the 1830 census of Butler Co AL. This line MAY PERHAPS be descendants of Abemelich Pate. The spelling variants of Abemelich are numerous. Two variants, "Bemlick" and "Benelive" appears in the material IV-2-3-2-1 Alexander was born in North Carolina July 2, 1820. He married Matilda Amanda Pate who was born in Butler Co Ala Dec 22 1823, probably the daughter of Alexander Pate of the 1830 Census of that county. These Pates were likely also to have been a North Carolina family, perhaps even Columbus Co. Alexander only had a couple of years in Alabama to make the acquaintance of Matilda and it is merely reasonable to expect that they were fellow pioneers. She died at Symrna Texas Jan 6 1863. He died Dec 29, 1869 also at Symrna. On a leaf of the family bible their first children were inscribed as Thomas Bemlick (probably Benelive - a Pate name). (Feb. 13 1843), Josiahor Dennis (Mar. 15 1846), Susannah Frantches (Aug 23, 1848), Daniel Dougher (later rendered as Docher and Dozier) (Nov. 27 1850) were born in Butler Co., and the rest Elizabeth Jane (Mar. 7, 1856 - Nov. 12, 1863), Martha Ellen (Mar. 30 1858 - May 28, 1948) were born in Guadeloupe Co after the 1851 move to Texas. Ma! tilda Pate had sisters Elizabeth (m. George Worcester), Susannah (m. Eli Hardcastle), Amy (m. James Hardcastle), Nancy (m. Joe Loftin) and a brother Joe all of whom made the Texas trek; probably also a brother Elijah who did not. Elias Hardcastle sent them instructions for the route through Texas to his place at Sullivan's Port on the Brazos where they rested for a few days. Alexander kept an accurate record of the cost of the ferriage over the 16 rivers they crossed between Butler Co and Prairie Lea in Guadalupe Co. They finally reached the west bank of the Colorado River of Texas on the 2nd of November 1851 after a 1O week trip. They were the first of the Alabama-North Carolina Fowlers to migrate to Texas. By 1861 the family had moved to Milam Co where they paid Confederate taxes in succeeding years, and where the twins Clara and Emma were born (Dec.20, 1860). Fanny (Susannah Frances) married Jordan Lafayette Ely 29 Oct 1863 (children: W C 25Jan1865, Annie Laurie 20Aug185! 7, Jordan A 18Nov1869, Rebecca Matilda 23Dec 1871, Emmanuel B 8Oct 187 3, Hosea Albert 11Oct1875, Jay Gould* 14Nov1883, Claudia Florence 24Dec 1887, Emmet Yates 20Jul1893). Martha Ellen married R D York and has a son J D York of Vancourt TX. Clara married George Dallas, then Pierce Pittman with: children Estelle (m. Wm Gregg) and Vida, then a third husband and then a ____ Luton. Emma married 1st J F Needham (children: Carrie, m 1st Hal Wright m 2nd ____ Gray of Houston TX; Lillian; Oren; Exie; Willi) and 2nd R E Watts. *Said to have been named after Jay Gould who was building the railroad through Milano and boarded with them just before his son was born. He promised to send $100 in gold to the family if it was a boy and they would name it after him, and he was as good as his word. Transcribed from pages 46 and 47 Joel

Also look in Union County Illinois as there maybe a connection there for you. I am searching for Johanna Pate (born 15 Sep 1856, Union County, IL) and her brother, William B. Pate (born abt 1851, Union Co, ILL and the B. in his name may be for the name Bissell and they were both born in Union County, ILL. The best I have found for them so far has been their father was Joseph Pate and this really makes sense since I have found Johanna in several place where her name was Josephine which indicates she could have been named after her father. It seems that the mother of these two had at least three husbands and their father also had a couple of wives. Live goes on but searching becomes more difficult doesn't it. ellen The name Bissell I found in some papers that his sisters' granddaughter left.
Deborah, I don't know the answer to that, but I've seen posts about an Edward M. PATE on the PATE surname boards. Can't remember whether he was in Illinois. The names George W. (Washington) and Matthew are so common, that it's hard to tell whether it's connection or coincidence. I am sending what info I have on Virgil Stewart and his first marriage to "Mattie". Their daughter was Nora Belle Maddox and I have listed her death certificate and the certificate number which is on file at the Oklahoma Bureau of Vital Statistics in Oklahoma City. I did not list the family of Virgil Stewart Maddox and Johanna (Josephine) as there are still three living grandchildren. This and other information about Martha Amanda Pate (parents, sibs and bible records) supposedly are detailed in a book - Main Title: A History of the Fowler Family of Southeastern North Carolina. Ellen: You indicate that Johanna Pate and Virgil Stewart Maddox married 1879 in Milam Co TX. I suspect that they married much earlier than 1879. The record that seems to fit best is - J. A. Pate married Virgil S. Maddox 8 Dec 1864 in McLennan Co TX. This marriage date (1864) would be much more accommodating for the birth of their dau, Nora Maddox, in 1868. The William Pate in the household next to Virgil S Maddox does have the same birth profile, i.e., IL/TN/TN as Johanna Pate Maddox. They are in the same birth cohort and you could be fairly safe to argue that they were siblings. I suspect that the couple, William and Susan Pate, were the W. Pate who married Susan Mrs Wilson in Grayson Co TX 12 Jan 1874. She apparently was the widow of a George Wilson of Grayson Co. TX. See 1870 census. If William Pate and Johanna Pate Maddox were siblings, who were their parents? Did they have other sibs? I scanned Illinois census data to see if I could find Johanna. Not much to go on. There was a single Pate family enumerated in the 1850 Union Co IL. This was the family of Elizabeth Pate. Apparently Elizabeth Skelton Pate the widow of Willey P Pate. Since Johanna Pate Maddox was b about 1854 this rules this family out. There were Pate families or households (3) in the 1835 state census of IL, but only heads of household were named. 1835 Union Co IL Index Francis Pate Pg 445 Jeremiah Pate Pg 447 William Pate Pg 446 I could find nothing to link William Pate and Johanna Pate to a Mary Katherine PAGE or to Hot Spring Co AR. Joel
Joel, don't know if I can help you or not but I can certainly confuse you. There was a Johanna Pate born 15 Sep 1856 in Cobden, Union County IL (died 8 Apr 1914 in Oklahoma) and she married Virgil Stewart Maddoz in 1879 in Milam County Texas. She was the second wife of Virgil Maddox. In 1880 Virgil and Johanna were living in Stephens County Texas and living next door to them was a William Pate, age 32, born in ILL and his wife was Susan, age 25 born in KY. I would almost bet that these two are siblings. At one time I believe but not proven that the Pate family was living near Hot Springs, AR and there was a half sister whose name was Mary Katherine Page but I have not proven that state either. How do I know this without proof? Virgil and Johanna Maddox are the greatgrandparents of my husband. One other clue for you on one census, I found Johanna listed as Josephine but that is not the name that her family (grandchildren, etc. used) If this help, let me know. ellen -------------- Original message from "Joel Pate" : -------------- > HELP in Oklahoma City, OK ! > Need help researching Martha Amanda Pate supposed b 22 Dec 1823 Butler Co AL, > married Rufus Alexander Fowler about 1840 in Butler Co AL and died 6 Jan 1862, > Smyrna, Milam Co TX. > > This and other information about Martha Amanda Pate (parents, sibs and bible > records) supposedly are detailed in a book - > Main Title: A History of the Fowler Family of Southeastern North Carolina. > Complied and Published by: Fowler, Richard Gildart. > Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN): 87-401578 > > I've located a copy in the library holdings of- > OKLAHOMA HISTORICAL SOCIETY > 2100 North Lincoln Boulevard > Oklahoma City, OK 73105 > (405) 522-5225 > > If any one has access to the OK Historical Society and could go there and > extract pertinent information, it would help very much and would be greatly > appreciated. > > If you have access to the book in your library and could help, that would be > super. > > Joel > > > >

I had two marriage records for Senia Ann Pate and Edward Harley Woodham. The correct record is the one recorded as 8 Apr 1867 in Book A, Page 518, Decatur Co GA. They appear in the 1870 census of Quincy, Gadsden Co., FL Joel
I also had a marriage of Murdock Brown & Miranda Pate as 24 Feb 1879 -- On the 1870 Richmond Co, NC census Murdock Brown's wife is listed as Margaret - b. 1831 On the 1880 Richmond Co, NC census Murdock Brown's wife is listed as Maranda - b. 1850 So it looks like the 1879 year is correct. Jinks
