I do not have a lot, but I will share what I have with you if you will email me directly. Our Pate line came from Pulaski County to Worth/Turner County. I wish I could get to my old Pate History Book that is packed up in storage. I might be able to help with some of this. My husband had a Great Uncle Named James Daniel Pate. That is who he was named for. (Daniel) He was the son of Maxie Pate and Alma Riddle of Turner County. Our Uncle "Jim" was not born until after the Civil War but he could have had another Uncle or Grandfather with that same name that he was named for. Joel, A number of persons from the SCV/MOSB have been quite generous and willing to help. Please see the information below that has the findings from some of these people (and also, from you). Would you see if the census information given is correct? How likely do you think it is that the James D. Pate (Co. 5, 5th Georgia Reserves) mentioned my John Ben Pate is the same person as my ancestor James D. Pate? Of course, John Ben Pate lists two James D. Pates (one as a Lieutenant) and the other as the possible Private of the 5th Georgia Reserves. Do you think that these could be the same person? Jeremy B. Utt ******************************************************************************* 1) Herman Johnson (SCV): James D. Pate and Jane Moore have (at least) three daughters. He mentions cemetery listings that he has for Turner Co., GA, from which he received this information. He also mentions that Turner Co., GA was formed partly from Wilcox Co., GA, and that Wilcox Co., GA was formed from Pulaski Co., GA. 2) Jim Templin (SCV): 1860 GA census (only one James Pate, with no middle initial listed). He was married to Jane (Moore?). James was 42 and Jane was 35. 1870 GA census lists Jane as head of the household, and the younger children from the 1860 census were with her and were the proper age. James may have died around 1868-69, because in 1870 there was one child that was one year old. Possible pension (application) for Jane Moore Pate? 3) Jim Pierce (SCV): Jeremy, From Pulaski County I have found: James Pate Residence Pulaski County GA; Enlisted on 6/20/1861 as a Private. On 6/20/1861 he mustered into "G" Co. GA 8th Infantry He was Killed on 6/28/1862 at Garnett's Farm, VA Sources used by Historical Data Systems, Inc.: - Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865 (c) Historical Data Systems, Inc. @ www.civilwardata.com 4) Jim Pierce (SCV): Jeremy and Al, Further research may reveal that the record for James Daniel may be for the same man who served in the 5th. It is possible he joined up with a local unit that was disbanded before official recognition and then joined again in the 5th Reserves, which never saw combat. Records I sent in my first reply substantiate that possibility. jim pierce 5) Jim Pierce (SCV): Compatriot Utt, Allow me to add a tidbit or two to the confirmation found by Compatriot Harding. The 5th Georgia Reserves, with 930 soldiers, was: Organized: on 11/1/63 Mustered Out: 2/4/64 and the Regimental Assignments was: From To Brigade Division Corps Army Comment Dec '63 Feb '64 Military Dist of Georgia Dept of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida Then we find the same numbered unit with 1733 combat soldiers: Organized: on 10/25/64 Mustered Out: 4/26/65 Here are the Regimental Assignments for that unit: From To Brigade Division Corps Army Comment Dec '64 Jan '65 Cumming's McLaws' Dept of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida Jan '65 Jan '65 Harrison's McLaws' Dept of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida Jan '65 Feb '65 Reserves McLaws' Dept of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida Feb '65 Feb '65 Harrison's McLaws' Dept of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida Feb '65 Apr '65 Fiser's McLaws' Dept of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida Apr '65 Apr '65 Harrison's Walthall's 3rd Army of Tennessee Neither organization of the 5th Georgia Reserves suffered any casualties of any kind. I also found some records that may be of interest for soldiers. To be sure of your soldier, you can help by letting us know information about his county of residence. Here is a soldier record: J D. Pate Residence was not listed; Enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant (date unknown). He was commissioned into "H" Co. GA 25th Bn Prov Gd Infantry (date and method of discharge not given)Note: the unit never officially "organized". I also have this record reconfirming what Ed Harding located for you:James PateResidence was not listed; Enlisted as a Private (date unknown). He mustered into "E" Co. GA 5th Reserves Infantry (date and method of discharge not given) There were other records for men named "JAMES PATE" and "J.D. PATE"but they were eliminated from inclusion here because they were identified with other numbered units (they were also killed in the war). My source for all information here is from: - Index to Compiled Confederate Military Service Records - Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865 provided by civilwardata.com a subscriber service. jim pierce camp 836 Morganton NC 6) Edward Harding (SCV): Compatriot Utt, Although I do not have detailed information on James D. Pate, I found him listed on one of my databases. The information I found matches what you have. On the database (Generations Grande Suite, US Civil War Muster Rolls) I found the following information: James Pate (no middle initial given) Private Co. E, 5th Georgia Reserves National Archives Box 000226, Roll 0047, Record 00001519 I hope this bit of information might be of some help. Edward Harding SCV/MOSB Life Member Washington, NC 7) Al Medcalf (SCV): Jeremy, Do you know what county in Ga. he lived in or what his wife's name was? I find a James Daniel Pate who served in Co.F 25th Georgia Prov Grds. His wife, Laura Pate drew a widows pension in Fulton Co. Ga. 8) Ron Jones Jeremy, The best way to verify that would be to request service records and pension records if any. A very good source is: Genealogical & Historical Room Washington Memorial Library 1180 Washington Ave Macon, Georgia 31201-1790 All you have to do is send them a letter with his name and unit. They will make copies and send you a bill back at about .25 cents per copy. You cannot find a better deal than that. Ron Jones Commander Camp 87 Knoxville,Tenn 9) T Michael Wabnitz Dear Mr. Utt The only reference I have is enclosed: James Pate Residence was not listed; Enlisted as a Private (date unknown). He mustered into "E" Co. GA 5th Reserves Infantry (date and method of discharge not given) Sources used by Historical Data Systems, Inc.: - Index to Compiled Confederate Military Service Records (c) Historical Data Systems, Inc. @ www.civilwardata.com Also listed was James E of the 46th Co. In Southern Pride Honor, Home, Heritage T Michael Wabnitz Life Member SCV, Fire eater Past Adjutant, Camp 1492 Interim Commander Abram Fulkerson Camp Colorado Yankee Occupied Territory 10) Joel Pate (Pate Genealogy): Jeremy: I have nothing in the way of an official Confederate service record for James D Pate. >From the 1916-1917 booklet by John Ben Pate we have this clue. "James (D.) Pate, son of Rev. William Pate, was born in Pulaski County Ga., January 29th 1817, and in 1841 was married to Miss Jane Moore, who was born in Gwinett County, Ga., Oct. 12, 1825. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, with dark hair and gray eyes, and owned several farms, four hundred and seventy head of cattle, four hundred head of sheep, and one hundred head of hogs. He was a very liberal giver to charity and benevolence, and in one year gave eleven beeves, forty bushels of meal and two hundred and sixty pounds of bacon to widows, orphans and people too old to work. In 1858 he was a member of the first grand jury of Wilcox County. In a letter to his family, dated at Macon, Ga., Co. E, Fifth Ga. Reserves, Oct. 6, 1864, he speaks of Savannah, Charleston and Augusta. He writes of his mother as having lived in Augusta, of sickness in camp, of his son Bennett being with him." I know from lots of digging that very often there were no service cards made for men who served in reserve, home guards, railway guard or local militias. Neither James D Pate nor his wife lived long enough to apply for any sort of pension. No pension rights would have accrued to his children.
Al and everyone, Based on what information I have, James (D.) Pate was married to (Mary) Jane "Jincy" Moore. A Pate researcher informed me that both James D. Pate and Jane Moore died so soon after the War that neither of them would (likely) have applied for pensions. Jeremy B. Jim, Yes, I believe that James (D.) Pate was in the 5th Regmt. of Reserves (Georgia). Are you sure about the name "James Daniel Pate"? I have been told that the name is "James David Pate". Friendship Baptist Church was [is?] at Pineview, Ga near Wilcox/Pulaski county line. (5th dist, 1630 GMD) [Land lot map from GA archives] I was actually confusing James Pate & James Holt about the land grants. Sorry for my mistake in not looking back at the notes. James Holt in 1846 & 1847 bought several of the reverted land lots in the 12th dist, Union area (slightly NE of Seville), several miles south of Pineview. Lots #69, 91, 37, 92 & 124 I think the lots had been recently reduced to $5 per 202 1/2 acres lot (but that is without looking back at my newspaper research notes.) Jeremy: I have nothing in the way of an official Confederate service record for James D Pate. Joel
Lindy: I have both sets of dates- 30 Sep 1782-9 Aug 1865 (JBP) 11 Mar 1788-3 Oct 1865 for TPP in my database. The only "agreement" between the two is the year of death, 1865 There is one census record that is more supportive of the 1782 birth date. In the 1860 census she was living with her son and DNL in Wilcox Co (page 756-7, site 202/202). Her age and POB were given as 77 NC. That indicates a DOB of 1783. I can't find a Friendship Bapt Church in Wilcox Co in the modern GNIS. Was this church also known as Bohanon Church? I think James D Pate owned land in the SW tip of Pulaski Co that was given up to form Wilcox Co in 1857. Joel, I think we may have discussed these TPP dates in the past. I had changed mine in my database to reflect the toombstone records of Friendship Baptist Church, Wilcox Co Ga. Temperance Pate dates are given as b 11 Mar 1788-d 3 Oct 1865 in the cemetery records. There's quite a bit of difference between those & the ones of John Ben Pate in his booklet, but I have no idea which are correct. A few weeks ago, I looked up the Friendship Baptist church records on microfilm at the GA archives. Drawer/Roll 232/4 Friendship Baptist Church, Dooly, later Pulaski, now Wilcox Co. The church was organized in 1843 (no Pates listed as organizing or early members.) The church membership increases about the time James Holt received his land grant in the nearby area (late 1840's,) but new members are not specifically named. Records for 13 Sept 1856 show the following Pate related Baptisms-- James Holt Temta Holt Jane Holt Mary Holt Pheba an Holt Included with the church minutes is a Deed 5 June 1857, GA, Dooly Co, Harmon Knight to Levi Harrell, Reuben Runnels for the church at Friendship in said county.... witnesses were James (his x mark) Holt and Allen Barton Lindy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joel Pate" <patej@nettally.com> To: <PATE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 09, 2004 2:38 PM Subject: Re: [PATE GENEALOGY] Jeremy Utt's Pate Ancestors > She makes mention of his mother. I was thinking also that "John" who is mentioned as finding the pigs is John Thomas Pate, Jeremy's stated ancestor, since she mentions Jonothan Walker & Jonathan Smith using full names, but speaks of John in the same manner as she does Bennet & Hansel. I have a birth date for John Thomas Pate as 22 Jan 1847, but no death date. I liked the letter, because it so well describes what our Southern women were going through when the men were away at war. Lindy: Thanks for posting this letter: It is my belief that the writer of the letter was Mary Jane "Jincy" Moore Pate 12 Oct 1825-28 Apr 1887. She was writing to her husband James David Pate 29 Jun 1817-28 Aug 1865 She makes reference to Bennett Pate. I think this was their son William Bennett Pate 2 Oct 1842-10 Dec 1915 She also refers to a Hansel. This was probably their son James Hansel Pate b May 1862 d 1939. She makes mention of his mother. No doubt this was Temperance Parkerson Pate 30 Sep 1782-9 Aug 1865. This couple had another son, Elijah D M Pate b 24 Jan 1845-8 Oct 1860. He was dead before the letter was written 27 Oct 1864. Linda, NO! I did not know that such a letter exists! Yes, I am very new to genealogical research, where the Pate family in concerned. Please send me the transcription when possible (I would GREATLY appreciate it). I hope that whoever bought the letter will one day bequeath it to the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, VA, or to a Georgia state achieves agency so that "the rest of us" might have some sort of access to (or ownership of) it. Jeremy, since you seem to be a new researcher to Pate genealogy, did you see the 1864 letter that went on sale on e-bay in 2002 from your ancestor Jane Moore Pate to her husband James Pate who was away at war? If not, I made a transcription of the letter and have it in my database and will send it to you. I have no idea who bought the letter. It could be 6/8 weeks. I have a lot going on right now. -----Original Message----- From: Jeremy Utt [mailto:jeremy_utt@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 07, 2004 4:39 PM To: PATE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [PATE GENEALOGY] Sir John Pate . . . I'd like to know where Rev. John Ben Pate got his information. He makes some great claims, but the claims are certainly not going to be easy to prove. When convenient/possible, would you be willing to make me some photocopies of some of the information in the book. If so, I'll tell you what I would like to have (ideally). Thanks, Jeremy Utt

I believe that you are right. My husband (Danny Pate) has a copy of the Pate Family Genealogy that was done about 1900 by Rev. John Ben Pate. It was passed down to him by his great Aunt Cassie Cornelia Pate, daughter of Maxie Pate and Alma Riddle. This book is very fragile and at the present time it is packed up because we are in the process of moving. After we get moved and I unpack it, I will take a look. This little book starts with Sir John Pate who if memory serves me, was a Knight in Leichestershire England. Don't remember his wife's name or even if she was mentioned. Sorry for the third email, but I would like to get some information (ideally, information that is accurate and provable) on Sir John Pate (Baronet? of Sisonby, Leicestershire). Is this Sir John Pate, husband of Elizabeth Skipwith, the father of the Maj. Thomas Pate who immigrated to Virginia and who was a Magistrate for Gloucester, VA? John Ben Pate, in "History of Turner County" mentions that Maj. Thomas Pate was Magistrate in 1686. I think that Sir John Pate was his father, but I do not know for sure. Jeremy Utt Powhatan Co., VA
