    1. John Thomas Pate married Henrietta Kirkland 1867 in Wilcox Co GA
    2. Joel Pate
    3. Jeremy: I think that John Thomas Pate married Henrietta KIRKLAND in Wilcox Co GA 19 Jan 1867. The copy of the marriage license you have should give you a clue as to when and where it was issued and when the marriage ceremony was perform and by whom. I have information that indicates a John Owen(s) JIC (Judge of the Inferior Court) married them probably in Wilcox Co GA. It is entirely possible that the Clerk who issued the license recorded her surname as KIRKLING. These types of errors are why we have cousins who spell their surname as PAIT or PAYTE. I believe that Henrietta Kirkland was the daughter of Irwin Kirkland (b 16 Mar 1816-d ca 1867) and Cynthia Coleman (b 27 Sep 1816) Irwin Kirkland and Cynthia Coleman married in GA some time prior to the birth of Henrietta Kirkland in 1847. Henrietta Kirkland would have been approximately age 2 or 3 in the 1850 census of GA. Consider this household in the 1850 census of Emanuel Co GA Page 450B, Dist 28, site 94/94 [22 Aug 1850] Irvin Kirkland----------34 W/M b GA Sinthy Kirkland-------33 W/F b GA (Cynthia Coleman) Elizabeth Kirkland--10 W/F b GA Ivy Kirkland------------- 5 W/M b GA Henrietta Kirkland--- 2 W/F b GA Remer Kirkland------9m W/M b GA Also consider the 1870 census of Wilcox Co GA. If John Thomas Pate married Henrietta Kirkland on 1867 in Wilcox Co GA, they probably would have been enumerated in the 1870 census of Wilcox Co GA. Consider Page 211, House Creek Dist, site 363/360 John Pate------------22 W/M b GA 1848 Henrietta Pate-----21 W/F b GA 1849 Cinthia Pate--------- 2 W/F b GA 1868 In that era it was customary to name the first born daughter for the maternal grandmother. Cynthia Jane Pate b ca 1868 was named for her maternal grandmother, Cynthia Coleman. Researchers have surveyed cemeteries in Wilcox Co GA and have published the findings of that survey, in book form and on the Internet. Consider this entry from the survey of graves in the Oklahoma Baptist Church Cemetery in Wilcox Co GA- John Thomas Pate----22 Jan 1847-24 Feb 1924 Henrietta Pate-----------18 Jun 1847- 7 Jun 1906 I believe these dates to be an accurate representation of what was cut into the gravestones. I think that, if you research further, you will find that- Cynthia Jane Pate b 22 Apr 1868 d 11 Jul 1934 married 27 Jul 1883 in Dooly Co GA to Daniel Warren Spires b 30 Jul 1864 d 12 Feb 1939. Joel

    3. Jeremy: Suggest that you read THE AMERICAN GENOLOGY OF THE PATE FAMILY by John Ben Pate. Find the paragraph that begins- "John Pate, son of Jacob Pate and brother to Rev. William Pate, was born in Gloucester County, Virginia, or Newbern, N. C., about 1760." In the booklet John Ben Pate lists the alleged children of Jacob Pate and his wife Zillah Broach. Among them were Rev William Pate allegedly born about 1750 and the above referenced John Pate born about 1760. It is important to know and understand that JACOB PATE DIED IN SURRY CO VA IN 1752. His Last Will and Testament was made 15 Jun 1752 and was filed for probate by his Executrix and Executor " my dear and loving wife and my trusty friend William Clinch " in Surry Co VA on 21 Nov 1752. Zillah Pate and William Clinch are named in the probate filing. You may obtain a certified copy of this LWT and probate filing from the Clerk of Court in Surry Co VA. The document is recorded in Will and Deed Book 9, Pages 810-811. Jacob Pate was NOT the father of John Pate born about 1760 as asserted in the booklet written by John Ben Pate. John Pate b about 1760 was NOT a brother of Rev William Pate. Most evidence points to Rev William Pate being born in NC 1770-1774, much too late for him to have been a Revolutionary War Soldier. I can not make a reasonable conclusion that there is a collateral relationship between Rev William Pate and John Pate b about 1760. None the less, the John Ben Pate booklet does contain some very useful information about the Pate family of Washington Co., GA. Your research would be better served if you focused on the descendants of Redding Pate 26 Apr 1786-28 Sep 1838. I would submit that Major John Haynes Pate (2 Nov 1831-17 Mar 1888) and Lieutenant Colonel John Hugh Pate are one and the same individuals. Major John Haynes Pate did receive a brevet promotion to Lieutenant Colonel. His service cards reflect- Company K, 49th Georgia Infantry Regiment, ANV, aka Pulaski Grays, recruited from Pulaski County GA. He enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant 4 Mar 1862, was elected 1st Lieutenant 22 Mar 1862, was elected Captain 27 Jun 1862, was elected Major 28 Jun 1863, and resigned 23 Feb 1864. John Haynes Pate did have a brother named Redding Hamilton Pate (Sr) (Jun 1834-Mar 1896). He was a Physician. His service record reflects- Staff and Company F, 5th Regiment, State Guards. Also Staff and Company F and Company K, 49th Georgia Infantry Regiment, Pulaski Grays, Pulaski County. Enlisted as Private Company K, 49th Infantry Regiment, 1 May 1862, appointed Asst. Surgeon 16 May 1862, resigned 16 July 1862. Recommended for appointment as Asst. Surgeon, 5th Regiment, Georgia Reserves. Appears on Register of Medical Purveyors Office at Macon, 10 Oct 1862 through 2 Nov 1864. Also listed as Robert H. Pate. There was a third brother, Anthony Cowart Pate (11 Apr 1836-13 Feb 1916), not named in your listing. His service record reflects- Company E, 5th Georgia Regiment, State Guards, Reserves. 1st Lieutenant. I have no dates. Anthony Cowart Pate was an attorney and later a judge. I would be reluctant to assert a claim of lineal or collateral relationship between John Haynes Pate, Redding Hamilton Pate, Anthony Cowart Pate and the descendants of Rev William Pate. Do they have a common ancestor? Perhaps. Can you provide reliable evidence as to that common ancestor? I can not. In my view the assertion of John Ben Pate that these Pates lines descend from Jacob Pate is fundamentally flawed and is erroneous. 3. Hi, Does anyone know anything about the genealogy of any of these Confederate soldiers and/or army staff? A friend sent me these names: Pate, John Hugh - Lieutenant Colonel. Pate, John Haynes-Major. Pate, Redding Hamilton - Assistant Surgeon. These men were from Georgia (please see the subject line), and I believe that I could have a collateral relationship to them. I am trying to find a qualifying ancestor for the Military Order of the Stars and Bars (MOS&B), and I need a relative (lineal or collateral). I know that a number of Pates served in the War. 3. Joel, I received an envelope yesterday from a judge's office in Dooly Co., GA. Inside the envelope was a certified copy of the marriage record for a John Pate and a Henrietta "Kirkling". Unfortunately, the copy was very unclear, and the judge's office advised me to write to the Georgia State Library/Archives (whatever the name is). The date of the marriage seemed to be November 1864 (not the 1867 date that I had expected) . . . Does any of what I have told you ring a bell? Could Henrietta Kirkling have been Henrietta Kirkland? Are you familiar with the surname Kirkling (in Georgia)? Could the spelling possibly be a mistake? Jeremy Utt

We have nothing additional on her. Thanks again. I checked the PATE-L archives (all postings to Pate-L are retained in a searchable archive) and found one mention of a letter from Jane (Jincy) Moore Pate to her husband, James D Pate, being sold on E-Bay around Oct 2002. Some one captured the content of the letter, but I have been unable to trace the letter or the sale of it further. Perhaps the correspondence was posted to the GenWeb archives. There MAY have been other letters between James D Pate and his wife Jane Jincy Moore Pate, but I have not been able to identify other correspondence. In terms of keeping up with all of the findings and information on your family tree, you may find it useful to obtain and install, on your computer, some type of family tree software. You may buy such software, but for beginners I would recommend PAF (Personal Ancestry File). The PAF is the 'granddaddy' of most family tree software. It was developed by the LDS and is a FREE down load from LDS. See following instructions- 1. Go here- http://www.lds.org/welcome 2. In the left frame, click on the words "Family History" 3. On the "Welcome" link bar, click on the "Order/Download - Products" link 4. On the next page, click on the "Software Downloads-Free" link 5. Click on the "Download" button next to item 77034999 Personal Ancestral File 5.2.18.0 0 - Multi-language (9.7 MB). 6. Follow the instructions as they appear on you computer screen. You will probably be instructed to turn you computer off and back on again. Do it and you have PAF installed and ready. These are old instructions and Version numbers may have been updated and changed, but the basics are still the same. Joel

    3. Janet, Thank you for the FHC information. I will see what I can find out. It is interesting that you asked me about John Thomas Pate. I had not even considered the possibility that he might have been a Confederate soldier! He probably was of "a prime age" (as you suggest) for military service. I can imagine what life must have been like in Georgia in 1864 as General Sherman was on his infamous path of destruction during the so-called "March to the Sea". No wonder why Jane was so worried. Any information about John Thomas Pate's military service (if he served) would be appreciated. I believe that somebody sent me a transcription of a letter, but I can not remember at the moment. I have been getting so many "Pate genealogy" emails (I'm NOT complaining) that I have not been able to sort through everything yet. Do you have access to the "war letters" that you mentioned, or at least copies of the letters? I really want to get copies of any of the letters that I can. By the way, I have been informed that John Thomas Pate and Henrietta Kirkland married in 1867 in either Wilcox or Dooly Co., GA. I am investing this myself to see what is true. I have mailed "research requests" to the Dooly and Wilcox courthouses . . . Thanks for all of your help! Jeremy Utt

    3. Joel, You mentioned some war-time correspondence between Mary Jane "Jincy" Moore Pate and her husband, James David Pate. Point Jeremy in the direction of that correspondence. They can supplement and occassionally substitute for lost marriage certificates, etc. The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) has accepted copies of 'time-sensative' documents as proof of marriage or birth. <http://www.hqudc.org/> The National Archives has Compiled Service Records for all Confederate States. (If the URL wraps to two lines copy and paste both into the address bar) <http://www.archives.gov/research_room/alic/reference_desk/military_resources/civil_war_service_records_pamphlets.html> Good luck Jeremy - I am sure your mother will enjoy being a member of UDC. Please respect the privacy of other people; do not submit information on living individuals without their permission.

    3. Thanks for the Information. YES this is our family and I have been to all of the gravesites. However, I did not have the marriage date. Thanks again for your trouble. I can clear up part of this for you. Our Maxie Pate was the son of Jonathan Pate and Georgia Anne Redd of Pulaski Co. It is and has been confusing for me because there were several other Maxie Pates before ours. Jonathan Pate was the son of MAXIE Pate and Catherine Holt (I believe Pulaski Co). That Maxie was the son of Rev. William Pate of Glouchester, VA and Tempty Parkerson who I believe were the 1st in Georgia. He is supposed to be buried at Warwick in Worth Co. We have not been able to Correctly connect Rev. William Pate to THOMAS, John, and SIR Richard who first came from England. I can send you the file that I have if you will send me your direct email. James D. (Daniel) Pate DOB 7/18/1891 and Cassie C.(Cornelia) Pate DOB 5/26/1893 were both SIBLINGS of Maxie Pate DOB 1/5/1881. Neither of them ever married nor had any children. They both went to Panama as young people and worked for the US Government at the Panama Canal until in the 1960's when they retired. Uncle "Jim" was a Chef for a lot of government dignitaries. Arthur A. Pate DOB 1/7/1905 was the 1st child of Maxie Pate and Alma Riddle Pate. He and Rufus Pate DOB 7/6/1909 were siblings. Rufus was my father-in-law and his wife was Vesta Westberry Pate. She is buried Next to Rufus. Maxie Pate and Alma Riddle Pate had the following 8 children: Arthur A. I have already gotten all of the information she could give me which was not a lot. James Hiatt, Jr. was the 1st child of Virginia Pate Hiatt and her husband, James Hiatt, SR. (of Peoria IL) He died of polio as a small child. He is the grandson of Arthur A. Pate. Virginia and her husband always lived in IL and had 5 additional children. Maxie Pate moved from Turner Co. to Ben Hill County in the late 1920's. Both he and his Wife Alma Riddle are buried at Evergreen in Ben Hill Co. along with their son Richard. It is just in a separate plot. Our "Maxie" had some additional siblings. This is all that Aunt Net could tell me: John, Emma Jean, and a William (Bill). Hope this helps. Turning again to the 1920 census of Turner Co GA we find Enum Dist 143, sheet 16A, Hobby, site 278/288 Maxie M Pate (head) b ca 1858 Mary Pate (wife) b ca 1848 Enum Dist 143, sheet 17A, Hobby, site 297/307 J Daniel Pate (head) b ca 1881 Sarah A Pate (wife) b ca 1881 Evey Pate (dau) b ca 1900 It would seem that Maxie Pate and Alma Riddles did not have a son named James Daniel Pate but Maxie Pate Jr and Mary Philyaw did. 3. Diana: I have some records for the Evergreen Cemetery in Ben Hill Co GA that seem to fit your line. There MAY be errors in the transcription of the dates but what I have- two double graves - MAXIE PATE --------05 Jan 1881-23 Aug 1956 ALMA PATE ---------21 Apr 1882-08 Jun 1949 JAMES D. Pate 1882-1849. Rufus Pate 1909-1973 also perhaps is a son of Maxie and Alma. Going over all of this I see an error in my conclusions about James D Pate 1891-1961 being a son of Maxie and Alma Pate. Maxie Pate was clearly born about 1881. He had a son named James (Jim) whose birth appears to be about 1919 not 1891. Maxie Pate b abt 1881 married in 1903 did not have a son named James b abt 1891. The James D Pate 1891-1961 buried near Maxie Pate in Ben Hill County was not his son The Jim (James) Pate, age 11 b abt 1911, listed as a son of Maxie and Alma Pate in the 1930 census MAY PERHAPS be James Pate b 31 Aug 1918 d Apr 1986 [from SSDI]. He resided in Cordele, Crisp Co GA, at time of death. The GA Death certificate index has a James H Pate died 20 Apr 1986 in Dougherty Co GA residing in Crisp Co at time of death This appears to be James Hansel Pate b 31 Aug 1918 d 30 Apr 1986, per headstone in Arabi-Antioch cemetery in Crisp Co. James D Pate 1891-1961 bur Ben Hill Co GA near Maxie Pate 1881-1956 were not son and father. Were they perhaps brothers? I thought that the 1900 census of GA might yield some answers so I looked for a Maxie Pate b abt 1881 and did not find one. I looked for a James D Pate b abt 1891 and did not find him either. I did find three interesting households in Worth Co. 3. Jeremy: Do not confuse James Daniel Pate 15 Apr 1845-22 Jun 1917 and James David Pate 28 Jan 1817-28 Aug 1865. James Daniel Pate served in Company F, 25th GA Provost Guards and James David Pate served in Company E, 5th GA Reserves. James Daniel Pate received a pension for his Confederate service. The second wife of James Daniel Pate, Laura McKenzie McDonald, applied for and received a Widow's Pension for the Confederate service of James Daniel Pate. She was residing in Fulton Co GA at the time she applied. Copies of their respective applications are available at the GA State Archives in Atlanta. James David Pate and his wife Mary Jane "Jincy" Moore both died before the establishment of the Confederate Pension program in GA. 3. Diana, Any help will be much appreciated. Please not that I believe I am descended from a "James David Pate", NOT a "James Daniel Pate". However, I could be wrong. If a Pate researcher can tell me for sure that "James David Pate" married a (Mary) Jane "Jincy" Moore, and had a son named John Thomas Pate, I would greatly appreciate it. 3. Jim, I have not seen the service records for James Pate. Please note that this James Pate is probably not "James Daniel Pate".
