    1. Re: [PATE GENEALOGY] Rebecca Pate md Jennens Hulsey
    2. Some where in the back of my mind I think Rebecca and Jennen Hulsey were married in Putnam Co. GA. I do believe that I have a copy of the marriage license. I will try to find time to check for it today. My husband has Alzheimer Disease so I do not have much computer time. Someone ask if I had the birth date of Edward Pate Jr. No, I did not find a date of birth for him. Margaret Lindly

    3. Margaret: [From Hulsey researchers] Rebecca Pate married Jennens (Jennings) Hulsey on 13 Mar 1806 in Henry Co GA. Hulsey was b ca 1765 in Kings Mountain, NC and was a Revolutionary War soldier. Rebecca Pate was b ca 1788 in SC and died 31 Aug 1827 in DeKalb Co GA. Hulsey next married a Dixie Dodson. [I am uneasy about this data as Henry Co GA was not authorized and organized until 1821] Nancy Pate married Charles Hulsey on 28 Feb 1811 in Jasper Co GA. He was b ca 1761 in NC and died 1862 in Jefferson Co AL. [Source: LCCN 89-175308, Warren] The marriage date also is listed as 28 Feb 1813. Jasper Co GA was originally named Randolph Co/ The rename occurred in 1812 Randolph/Jasper and Putnam are adjoining counties My notes reflect that Peterson Pate married Rebecca Heath on 5 Jul 1810 in Putnam Co GA We learn a great deal about the PATE-HULSEY connections by looking at early Henry Co GA Deeds [I think most of the following was gathered by Lindy Hard] Henry Co GA deeds (1825?) - Henry Co GA, Deed Bk C/D, p 519. 3. The will did not always named the husband of their daughters. Take Thomas Pate died 1773 named his daughter as Mary Turner & Elizabeth Freeman. thanks to that I have never been able to find out who their husbands. Strange no one is researching William & Rebecca. Then they mostly married 1st cousins. What John Pate that we didn't find a marriage for is related to REbecca. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joel Pate" <patej@nettally.com> To: <PATE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2005 2:54 AM Subject: [PATE GENEALOGY] Edward Pate-Rebecca Pate-Burrell Pate of Sussex Co VA > > Jinks: > It is clear from Northampton Co NC census data that Burrell(Burwell) S Pate was born abt 1804. 2. This is speculation only. Is it possible that Rebecca Hail Pate died and William Pate married Catherine? And the daughter Rebecca may have been the daughter of William and Rebecca Hail Pate. This Rebecca married Jennens "Jinsey" Hulsey in Putnam Co. GA. ( Can't find the date right this minute, but it was close to the time that Peterson Pate married Rebecca Heath in Putnam Co. GA). 2. William Pate born about 1760 Sussex Co. VA, married Rebecca Hail 26 September 1783 Sussex Co. VA. William was the son of Thomas Pate born 24 August 1739 Albermarle Parish Surry Co. VA. Thomas Pate was chr'nd on 23 December 1739 at Albermarle Parish in Surry Co. VA which is now Sussex Co. VA. He died about 1821 Sussex Co. VA. Thomas married Mary Felts about 1759 VA. Thomas Pate was the son of Thomas Pate born 1705 and Mary Thomas. The children of Thomas Pate (1739 - about 1821) and Mary Felts Pate were: William (about 1760) Lydia ( 1762) Winney (1763) Elizabeth (1764) Thomas (1767) Jesse (1768 - or 1771) Sussanah "SuKy" 1770) Jordan (1773) So, far some of this is speculation and has been open to errors. This information has been collected over 50 years on this family and we have never been able to completely nail it all down. We know that Thomas Pate (1739) is the son of Thomas Pate (1705 - 1774). Thomas Pate (1705 - 1774) was the brother of Edward Pate (1742 - 1805). We are reasonably sure that Thomas Pate (1739) is the father of William Pate (about 1760 VA) and that we are almost certain that this William Pate is the father of Peterson Pate ( January 1785 Sussex Co. VA - died before 29 May 1848 Anderson Co. TX) This Peterson Pate married Rebecca Heath 5 July 1810 Putnam Co. GA. We believe that William and his son Peterson witnessed the Will of Edward Pate ( 1742 - 1805 ). We know that Peterson Pate had a son named William and a son among others named Elijah Moseley Pate. We know Elijah Pate was the father of Amanda Jane Pate, Marion Franklin Pate and Wiley Edward Pate. We know that Wiley Edward Pate had son William Monroe Pate. We know that William Monroe Pate had a daughter named Margaret A. Pate. Margaret Lindly

    2. So far this is all I have found on Burwell (Burell) Pate . He was born 1805 - 1815 where and when unknown, most likely VA . He was the son of John Pate born 1780 and Rebecca Pate born 1785 VA. John and Rebecca were married 12 May 1812 Sussex Co. VA. Rebecca daughter of Edward Pate (1742 - 1805) and Lucretia Adams (1750 VA - ?). Edwards children: Harbert, Hardy, Cordy, Edmund, Rebecca, Lucy, Henry, Hartwell, and Edward. Edwards will was 22 February 1773 Augusta Co. VA. Edwars will made probate 29 October 29 October 1804. Probate continued to 4 April 1805 Sussex Co. VA. This will was witnessed by William Pate ( whom I believe to be Peterson's Father) and Peterson Pate. Peterson Pate was my great great grandfather on my paternal side and my great great great grandfather on my maternal side. Edward was the son of Thomas 1705 VA - 1774 VA and Mary ( maiden name unknown). This is the only Burwell (Burell) Pate I have in my records at this time. Margaret Lindly

The g/f of Burrell Pate, Edward Pate, specially named him in his LWT, which was written 29 Oct 1804 in Sussex Co VA. Clearly, Burrell Pate was born and named prior to 29 Oct 1804. The only sequence of events I can conjure up to make is fit goes like this- 1 John Pate, a cousin of Rebecca Pate, a daughter of Edward Pate, impregnates her in late 1803 or early 1804. Imagine that! 2. Prior to the 12 May 1804 marriage of John Pate and Rebecca Pate, her early pregnancy is discovered. This kind of forces the issue of Rebecca's marriage, even to a close cousin. This also assumes (bad thing to do) that the Rebecca Pate who married John Pate 12 May 1804 was the daughter of Edward pate who wrote his LWT 29 Oct 1804. 3. Edward Pate, in his 29 Oct 1804 LWT, made his bequest to his dau, Rebecca Pate. Customarily, he would have made his bequest to his son-in-law, in "the right of" his dau. If Rebecca Pate, dau of Edward Pate and mother of Burrell Pate, was the same Rebecca Pate who married John Pate 12 May 1804, why was he, John Pate, not named in the LWT of Edward Pate? Perhaps this John Pate was deceased or perhaps Edward Pate view this John Pate as an unwelcome interloper and deliberately bypassed him when writing his will. 4. Rebecca Pate, dau of Edward Pate, could have borne Burrell Pate out of wed lock and the Rebecca Pate who married John Pate was a different Rebecca Pate. At any rate, I haven't a clue as to the parents of this John Pate. After looking at this again, I am comfortable with the conclusion (better than an assumption) that the Rebecca Haile who married William Pate 26 Sep 1783 in Southampton Co VA, was NOT the Rebecca Pate named in the 29 Oct 1804 LWT of Edward Pate. Which gets us back to Helen's original question- who were this William Pate and Rebecca Hail and what became of them? JMP

    3. The clause from the 1804-1805 LWT of Edward Pate of Sussex Co VA that addresses his dau, Rebecca and her son Burrell provides- Item. It is my Will and desire that my Executors retain in their hands 10 pounds of my daughter REBECCA PATE's part of my estate which I do hereby give to my grandchild, BURRELL PATE, son of my said daughter, REBECCA PATE, and which I do desire may be laid out in his education. What conclusion can be drawn from this clause? Questions: 1. Was PATE both Rebecca's maiden and married name? 2. If so, who was her PATE husband. 3. Who was the father of Burrell Pate? 4. Did Burrell Pate use PATE as a surname because his father was unknown or at least unnamed? 5. Was this Burrell Pate the same as Burwell S Pate who married Nancy IVEY in Southampton Co VA 4 Nov 1820? Burrell Pate and Nancy Anne Ivey relocated about 20 miles south into Northampton Co NC and raised a large family. There were traces of this line in Northampton Co NC as late as 1930. Joel

    3. The following 1914 news article may be of interest- R.C. Pate Dead "Gambling King" Lost Big Fortune Made thousands in St. Louis in day when "lid was off," but luck changed! Robert C. Pate, who made and lost a fortune in St. Louis as a horse owner, racetrack promoter, bookmaker, and gambling house proprietor, died at his home, 1908 La Salle Street yesterday. Though he had long been suffering from cancer of the tongue, said to have been caused by excessive cigar smoking, the immediate cause of death was bronchitis. He was 75 years old. In recent years his main financial dependence has been a pension paid to him by the Government in recognition of his service as a Union officer in the Civil War. He was Captain of the thirty-seventh Indiana Infantry. An operation performed a year ago had impaired Pate's speech to such an extent that what he said was understood only by his wife, who nursed him through his long illness and was at his bedside when he died. KNOWN AS "GAMBLING KING" In the old wide-open days of St. Louis prior to the early 80's, Pate was known throughout the Southwest, and South as the "Gambling King of St. Louis." Laws were not stringent in those days and the privilege of running gambling games was purchasable. To further his interests along this line Pate became active in politics and became so influential that it was common gossip that he controlled many public officials. In consequence his gambling ventures were seldom molested. He was a power in the days of Pool Alley, when the bookmakers infested the narrow by-ways between Seventh and Eighth streets, Olive and Pine streets. For many years one of the largest of the pool rooms there had a flamboyant sign over the door proclaiming it "Pate's Turf Exchange." LOST FORTUNE IN RACE VENTURES At one time Pate was reputed to have several hundred thousand dollars, but he lost most of the money in racetrack ventures in St. Louis and Mexico after gambling houses, which he controlled, were closed by the Johnson anti-gambling law in 1882. There were nearly 60 indictments against him when he gave up the fight in St. Louis and went to Mexico to open a racetrack. For several years after this he continued to operate racetracks and poolrooms in St. Louis. He was financially interested in the Kinloch and Union racetracks, which were put out of business by the repeal of the Breeder's law when Joseph W. Folk was Governor. When Pate went to Mexico after being put out of business in St. Louis he obtained from President Dias a concession to operate a racetrack. He afterwards told friends he lost several hundred thousand dollars there. CAME HERE IN 1867 As an added attraction at his Mexican track he once pitted an African lion against a fighting bull. The animals fought to a finish in a steel cage in view of a large audience. The bull won. Pate had bet heavily on the lion. Pate was the son of a wealthy farmer. He ran away from home at Dillsboro, Ind. when 10 years old and never returned. Until about 20 years old he lived with an uncle at Lawrenceville, Ind. He came to St. Louis in 1867. After conducting gambling games on steamboats he opened houses in St. Louis. He married Miss Lollie Faudree at Hamilton, Ohio in 1868. She died two years later. In 1875 he married Miss Mary A. Cullinane of St. Louis. Robert Pate, a son by the first marriage, and Mrs. Shellie Turner, a daughter by the second, are living. Three other children died. WANTED TO MEET OLD FRIENDS Shortly before the opening of the World's Fair, Pate returned to St. Louis from Mexico and planned to open a gambling house, thinking the city would be wide-open during the fair. He guessed wrong. After he had fitted up luxurious gaming rooms at 112 South Fourth Street the police backed up a battery of moving vans and carted away the gorgeous furniture. Pate's guess had been as wrong as when he backed the African lion against the Mexican bull. Pate and his wife in recent years have lived in rooming houses in various parts of town. Mrs. Pate today told a Post-Dispatch reporter that in his last illness Pate expressed two desires. One was to go back to Mexico and again enter the horseracing game there and the other was to go to the Laclede Hotel and meet friends of other days who once gathered there. She had been planning to hire an automobile and take him to the Laclede. Twenty-five years ago Pate and his family lived in what was considered one of the finest St. Louis suburban homes. It was on the Baden bluffs overlooking the river, north of the city limits. This home, originally built by D. A. January, was said to have cost more than $100,000.00, with the furnishings. Pate was a lavish entertainer there in the days of his prosperity. PAID $30,000 FOR HOME Maj. Charles G. Gonter, 89 years old, who knew Pate in the gambler's prosperous days was one of the old acquaintances whom Pate longed to meet at the Laclede Hotel. Major Gonter today told a Post-Dispatch reporter of Pate's purchase of the January farm in Baden. Jim Robinson, a famous circus man and noted bareback rider owned the estate and had transformed it into a training ground for his horses. Pate visited the place as Robinson's guest. He bought it from Robinson for $30,000 in cash. A few days later Pate took his wife to the Robinson estate. After a tour of inspection Mrs. Pate sighed and expressed a wish that she could have such a home. "You have, my dear," said Pate. "This place is ours" and he showed her the deed of sale. Later he mortgaged the place and lost it in financing his Mexican racing venture. - St. Louis Post Dispatch, September 5, 1914
