    2. Hello, Just wondering if anyone else is looking for (or has) information on Jeremiah Pate (4 Feb 1844) md. Lucinda Blair (1 Aug 1850) in Sangamon Co. IL 24 Aug 1869? I have looked at the Pate Archives at rootsweb.com and found three posts that were related: 19 Dec 2002 #163, 25 Feb 2000 # 43, and 14 Dec 2000 # 230. I'm (probably very obviously) new to family history research and am wondering which of these two sources is more reliable: a census transcription that I found online at census-online.com or a copy of a death certificate? The information that I have found in the 1880 Brown Co. IL Census for Elkhorn township (which, by the way, spells the last name as PATES) conflicts with Jeremiah Pate's death certificate regarding his birthplace. I know death certificates are considered secondary resources regarding birthdate/places. Any comments? Thanks so much! April

    3. Janice, Thanks for writing about your Jesse Pate. Family history says my Jesse Pate's birth yr was 1814 in NC. 1840 census sites him as born between 1800-1810 (age 30-40). But who knows if that is correct. I have been unable to find anything that might be a second source for a better estimate of his age as having been born in 1814, or 1800-1814. I think it is possible he came from TN and is a brother or cousin to William Riley Pate, Redding Pate, or Jacob Pate of southern IL. Thanks. He married Loucretia Edwards in Macon Co, IL in 1836. They moved along with her parents to JoDavis Co, IL which was the Wisconsin Territory (1838). They all removed to Jackson Co, IA. Unfortunately, he died in 1848 and he only had two children. Not much family to follow. But, I am trying to find his parents. Supposedly, he was born in Buncombe, NC abt 1814. Anyway, Jacob Pate who removed from Dearborn Co, IN to JoDavis Co to Jones Co, IA. He married Emma Hamilton in 1832/33 (I have you as source on that). I have his birth year as Abt 1790. Jacob had a brother Henry who was in Dearborn Co, IN to Dubuque Co, IA in 1840. Both were vets of the War of 1812. I have nothing that proves that Jacob, Jesse and Henry are linked, but can't help but feel that they are. Still searching. Aanother reason I was so interested in Davis - one he was from Dearborn Co and because he was in Jewell Co, KS - you say in 1880. My 3gr grandfather Thomas Jefferson Wilson left Jackson Co, IA and removed to Jewell Co, KS. His family is listed in the 1880 census. Thomas was born in Decatur Co, IN. I have a couple family lines from that area of IN. Carol ====================================================== My great-grandfather, Jesse Pate, was born 8 Nov. 1820 in Buncombe County, NC. The area later became Yancey County. He remained in western NC dying in Cherokee County 24 Dec. 1903. I have seen where some researchers have listed his birth as 1814-1820 and may be confusing two Jesses. I have been unable to find any PATEs in Buncombe County prior to 1830, with the exception of Jesse's father. John Pate served in Capt. Lowry's Co., of the NC Militia under the name of John Randolph (his stepfather's surname). Between the Compiled Military Service Record and the War of 1812 pension application we can place him in Buncombe County (later Yancey) as early as 3 June 1808. 3. Jinks, I should have added that if Davis Pate was related to Jacob or Henry Pate, I am wondering if he removed to Jewell, KS from IA. Perhaps the Pate and Wilson families came together. I already know that the Barkley family moved with Thomas Wilson to Jewell. Carol Carol wrote: > Hi Jinks > > I am (forever) trying to find something on my Jesse Pate. 3. Hi All, I just ran across a Pate marriage and thought perhaps it may be of interest to someone. This marriage is shown in a book titled, "Our Kin", the genealogies of some of the early families who made history in the founding and development of Bedford Co VA, c1930 by Mary Ackerly. The passage speaks of a John Ragland who came to Virginia about 1720 and settled upon Mechamps Creek. John Ragland md Anne Beaufort Their nine children: John, who married Nancy Dudley of Hanover in 1759 William, who married a Miss Lipscomb Samuel James, who married Catherine Davis Evan, who married ------ and settled in Halifax County Pettus, who married Elizabeth, daughter of John Davis of Hanover County Martha, who married Thomas Tinsley Frances, who married Jeremiah Pate --------, who married a Mr. Bowe.

    3. Joel - think I can answer a couple of questions for you -- according to "FAMILY LORE" - Robert Hamilton Pate left his wife, Parthena, between 1855-60 - and married Nancy Parker in 1862. Robert H & Nancy had 3 girls, Sarah E, b. 14 Jan 1863; Malinda C, b. ca 1866 and Mary A, b. Aug 1869. Robert H Pate d. 2 May 1869, evidently right before Mary A's birth, if the year of her birth is correct. I do not find the widow, Nancy Pate until 1900 Clay Co, IL. Susan Cecilia "Lollie" Faudree - wife of Robert Conaway Pate - d. 8 Mar 1870 of typhoid fever, so she was probably not in the 1870 census. Robert C Pate & wife, Mary "Mamie" are in 1880 Madison Co, IL. 3. Joel I am impressed to say the least. I found an obscure article written about Robert C. Pate in Mexico. I will find the web address and foreword it to you. It was quite detailed. Notes: Robert H. Pate and His father both work at scullin steel co. in st. Louis located on Manchester Blvd. Robert H. Pate was indeed married twice as you had indicated with two children from the first marriage before my grandmother. I went to the library downtown and printed out the sept 4th 1914 article about the gambling king. Robert H. Pate ,Robert L. Pate and some of their relatives are buried in the Cavelry Cemetery in St. Louis off of I-70. For others I have found a Pate Family in Monroe County Illinois across the river from St. Louis, buried in an old "Black Cemetery" They where white and are buried on the outer edge of the old cemetery near the Mississippi. It is Jonathan M. Pate and his two young daughters who died shortly after he was buried and their mother remarried. The wife's name was Anna who married Thomas Bevers and became Anna Bevers. The two daughters were Mary and Parmecai Pate both died around 10 years old I have a copy of the estate sale that Thomas Bevers held on August 2nd 1862. Thank you so very much for your detailed work Say a prayer for Jinks Michael

    3. Michael: In my OPINION- You ancestor, Robert Conaway Pate 6 Dec 1838 - 4 Sep 1914, was the son of (Robert) Hamilton Pate and Parthenia Conaway. You will see the name Parthenia used for female descendants of this family. (Robert) Hamilton Pate married Parthenia Conaway in Dearborn Co IN 23 May 1833. See Dearborn Co IN Marriages, Book 2, Page 412. The 5 Sep 1914 obituary of Robert C Pate in the St. Louis (MO) Dispatch refers to Dillboro and Lawrenceville, IN. These are apparently two townships in Dearborn Co, IN and are actually Dillsboro and Lawrenceburg. Dillsboro is in southern Dearborn Co IN on US Highway 50 north of Laughley River, which is the county line between Dearborn and Ohio counties. Lawrenceburg is in west-central Dearborn Co near the Ohio River. There is a Lawrenceville in Dearborn Co, IN on the I-74 corridor. I believe that the PATE families in question were in the southern end of Dearborn Co during the 1835-1855 era, BUT they could have also been in other townships in Dearborn Co. (Robert) Hamilton Pate was enumerated in the 1840 census of Dearborn Co IN, page 92, line 8, No Township Listed. As you know, there was no family detail provided in the 1840 and earlier federal decennial censuses. Only the heads of household were identified by name. There were six individuals numbered in the household of Hamilton Pate in the 1840, five males and one female. Two males age 5 or less, 1 male age 5 to 10, 1 male age 15 to 20 and 1 male age 20 to 30, The sole female was age 20 to 30. The 1850 census of Ohio Co IN gives us a much better view of this family. We see, at page 335, 2nd District, site 582/600 Hamilton Pate-34 W/M--OH 1816 Parthena Pate-38 W/F--NY 1821 Charles Pate--15 W/M--IN 1835 James R Pate--13 W/M--IN 1837 Robert Pate---11 W/M--IN 1839 Eda Pate------ 5 W/F--IN 1845 Hamilton Pate- 3 W/M--IN 1847 William Pate-- 1 W/M--IN 1849 Robert C Pate at age 11 was still living with his father and mother. I would surmise that (Robert) Hamilton Pate, the father of Robert Conaway Pate died after the 1850 census and before the 1860 census. Robert Conaway Pate married the first of his three wives, Adaline B English, in Dearborn Co IN 15 Apr 1857. See Dearborn Co IN Marriages, Book 9, Page 318. Family history indicates that Robert Conaway Pate subsequently married Lola Fandree (date and location not yet verified) and that he finally married Mary A Cullinan 21 Mar 1875 in St Louis Co, MO. Robert Conaway Pate and his wife Adaline B English were enumerated in the 1860 census of Dearborn Co IN. See Page 77, Lawrenceburg Twsp, site 518/567-8 There two families in one household. Michael Echart--27 W/M--France 1833 Susan Echart----21 W/F--Ire 1839 Charles Echart-- 3 W/M--IN 1857 Robert C Pate---21 W/M--IN 1839 Adeline Pate----19 W/F--IN 1841 Michael Echart was a shoemaker by trade. Robert C Pate was a telegrapher. I have no research on the relationship of these two young families. As noted earlier, I believe that (Robert) Hamilton Pate, the father of Robert Conaway Pate, died after the 1850 census. This is, in part, supported by the 1860 census of Dearborn Co IN, Page 243, Clay Township site 254/254 John Conaway-------50 W/M--0H 1810 Amirck Conaway-----45 W/F--IN 1815 Susuan Conaway-----24 W/F--IN 1834 Rachel Conaway-----22 W/F--IN 1838 James Conaway------14 W/M--IN 1846 Sencalaty Conaway--12 W/F--IN 1848 Samuel Conoway-----10 W/M--IN 1850 Penethany Pate-----45 W/F--IN 1815 Eathan Pate--------18 W/F--IN 1842 Hamilton Pate------14 W/M--IN 1846 William Pate-------12 W/M--IN 1848 Pennathay Pate----- 8 W/F--IN 1852 Henry C Pate------- 5 W/M--IN 1855 Apparently, Parthenia Conaway Pate, widow of (Robert) Hamilton Pate, was residing with a brother, John Conaway, and his family. This may be the uncle with whom Robert Conaway Pate resided Robert Conaway Pate had a younger brother named Hamilton Pate who was born about 1846. This Hamilton Pate shows up in both the 1850 and 1860 census as outlined. There is a Clay Co IN marriage record that raises some questions. The marriage, recorded at Clay Co Marriages Book B, Page 212 on 30 Mar 1862 was between Hamilton Pate and Nancy Jane Parker. Was this Hamilton Pate the father of Robert Conaway Pate, the younger brother of Robert Conaway Pate or another kinsman of Robert Conaway Pate? There are some military records that indicate that Robert Conaway Pate served as a Lieutenant with Company K, 142nd Indiana Infantry Regiment, US Volunteers, in the Civil War. I have no research on the individual or regimental histories of this unit. One last note on Hamilton Pate, the younger brother of Robert Conaway Pate. The 1870 census of Ohio Co IN, page 418B, Union Twsp, Hartford PO, site 34/36 has this household. Milley Alden-----19 W/F --------------IN 1853 Hamilton Pate----24 W/M Farmer--------IN 1846 Margaret Pate----25 W/F Keeps House---IN 1845 Daniel Pate------2m W/M [Mar]---------IN 1870 Ellinor Werts----45 W/F House Keeper--IN 1825 Is this Hamilton Pate the younger brother of Robert Conaway Pate or perhaps some other Hamilton Pate? Back to Robert Conaway Pate and on to St Louis, MO. We know from a couple of sources that Robert Conaway Pate arrived in St Louis Co MO about 1867, following the close of the Civil War. We also know that he had some connection with a Hotel-Saloon-Gambling Hall known as the Planters House or Planters Hotel. Interesting census enumeration in 1870 in St. Louis County/City. Page 253A, St Louis, East Division, 6th Ward, Planter House Hotel R C Pate------34 W/M Saloon Keeper---NY 1836 Henry Pate----42 W/M Saloon Keeper---NY 1828 It is my belief that this was Robert Conaway Pate and an older cousin named Daniel Henry Pate or Henry Daniel Pate. The NY place of birth was probably an erroneous notation. Where was Lola Fandree? I haven't a clue. St Louis Co MO marriage records Robert C Pate md Mary A Cullinan in St Louis Co 21 Mar 1875. Record not yet verified. The 1880 Census of St Louis County/City MO is a confusing mess. Lots of missed families. Some families were recorded twice and even three times. I've found nothing in the 1880 census on Robert C Pate, but I did find these rather odd records that show a link between the PATE and CULLINAN surnames ED 57/4, St Louis, site 22/37 Henry Pate------25 W/M Head MD Bartender---IN/IN/IN 1855 Hannah Pate-----22 W/F Wife MD-------------MN/IRE/IRE 1858 Blanch Pate----- 1 W/F Dau SGL-------------MO/IN/MN 1879 Sarah Cullinan--18 W/F Sist SGL------------MN/IRE/IRE 1862 ALSO ED 21/39, St Louis 4th Ward , site 236/312 Henry Pate-----------26 W/M Head Clerk--------IN/IN/IN 1854 Annie Pate-----------22 W/F Wife Keeps House--PA/PA/PA 1858 Blanche Pate--------- 1 W/F Dau --------------MO/IN/PA 1879 Ernestina Cullinen---26 W/F Si/N/L------------NY/NY/NY 1854 ALSO page 446 Henry Pate------25 W/M Head Bartender----IN/IN/IN 1855 Hannah Pate-----22 W/F Wife Keeps House--MN/IRE/IRE 1858 Sarah Cullimen--18 W/F Si/N/L------------MN/IRE/IRE 1862 Blanch Pate----- 1 W/F Dau --------------MO/IN/MN 1879 Yours research indicates that Robert Conaway Pate and Lola Fandree had a son named Robert L Pate (b 14 Feb 1874 d 1924) and that this Robert L Pate married Katherine J Heatherman (b 2 May 1870 d 1943) in St Louis Co MO. I have a very little bit of post 1930 data on this line, but because some individuals are still living, that data will not be presented in a public venue. You inquired if this line was French or Irish. In my view this line was English and Virginian in origin. There were two major Pate lines from France that settled in Indiana, but these families were in Monroe and Harrison counties, not Dearborn County. Joel

Can't imagine why he was listed as John, then as Christopher, or maybe he had 3 "front" names. Also in the 1880 Henderson Co, TX Thomas Miller, age 23 Amanda Miller, age 30, wife Lucy Pate, age 22, sis-in-law Mittie Pate, age 14, sis-in-law (I was given her name as Mary Almittie Pate - md William V Holt -see 1900 census Ella Pate, age 11, step dau Jefferson Pate, age 9, step son Ophilla Pate, age 7, step dau J B Pate, age 5, step son Lucy & Mittie would be sisters of Amanda's first husband, Green Berry Pate - the step children would be children of Amanda & Green Berry Pate. Think we had quite a discussion on these families- what do you think on this??
