    1. Delayed Birth Certificates- Williamson Co TX (Cook-Pate)
    2. Joel Pate
    3. For Sharon and Margaret: The Williamson Co TX delayed birth certificates for Edith Christine Cook b 22 Oct 1904 and Rufus Selman Cook b 20 Jan 1903 are for two of the children of Rutha Elizabeth Pate and Middlebrook Selman Cook. Rutha (Rufie) Elizabeth Pate was b 21 Sep 1878 in Yalobusha Co MS. Her father was Rufus Pate and her mother was Victoria Elizabeth Boyle. Rufie Pate Cook was enumerated in the 1910 census of Bell Co TX. See Enum Dist 5, sheet 14, Precinct 2, site 191/193. Her maiden aunt, Mary Pate age 72, also was enumerated in the household. Rufie Pate, an unmarried female, was enumerated in the 1900 census of Bell Co TX with her step father, William Powell Hancock, and with her mother, Victoria Elizabeth Boyle Pate Hancock. See Enum Dist 18, sheet 6, Precinct 2, site 103/102. Rufie (Rutha) Pate was enumerated with her widowed mother in the 1880 census of Yalobusha Co MS. See household of V E Pate, page 267, Enum Dist 210, sheet 27, Beat 5, site 237. Rufus Pate, the father of Rutha (Rufie)! Pate was b about 1845 in Yalobusha Co MS and died about 1878 also in Yalobusha Co. Rufus Pate 1845-1878 was the son of James Pate and Margaret Harriet Railey. There were two Pate lines that moved into Yalobusha Co MS prior to 1850. One line was out of Warren Co GA and Sussex-Southampton Co VA This line descended from Harbert Pate and Charlotte Adams and had intermarried with a Broom(e) family in Warren Co. GA. The other line was from Kershaw Co SC and descended from the Levi Pate family in SC. James Pate, son of Levi Pate of SC, married Margaret Harriet Railey in SC. They married prior to 1838, lived briefly in AL and settled in Yalobusha Co prior to 1840. They were enumerated in the 1850 census of Yalobusha Co MS. James Pate died prior to 1860 and his widow returned to her family in Kershaw Co SC. Two or more of the older children of James Pate and Margaret Harriet Railey remained in MS, specifically Rufus Pate b ca 1844 and Mary Pate b ca 1840. Mary Pate b ca 1840 was the maiden aunt of Rutha (Rufie) Pate Cook enumerated in the 1910 census of Bell Co TX. Rufus Pate and his sister Mary Pate, the father and aunt of Rutha Pate Cook, were enumerated in the 1850 census of Yalobusha Co MS. See Page 378, site 7/7. Margaret Harriet Railey Pate was enumerated, with some of her children, in the 1860 and 1870 censuses of Kershaw Co SC. She was living with her parents, William and Morning Railey. I would "guess" that the Pate line was in Bell Co TX and that the Cook line was in the adjoining county to the south, which is Williamson. I would also "guess" that the marriage of Rutha Pate and Middlebrook Selman Cook was licensed out of Bell Co 1900-1902 and probably occurred in Bell Co. TX. The couple apparently established their initial home in Williamson Co. Jinks may have a differing view on the "other" Pate line in Yalobusha Co MS. Joel

    3. Dear Pate Researchers, Do any of you know of any reliable books that have been written on the genealogy and history of the Pate family of the United States (especially those of the South)? I am related to many (if not all) of the Pates mentioned in John Ben Pate's "Pate Family In America" (if I got the title correct) and in his "History of Turner County, Georgia". I have the book "History of Turner County, Georgia" and I have the "Pate Book" saved electronically on my computer. I would like to know what, if anything, has been written since John Ben Pate's books. Frankly, I have been told that I can not trust much of what I have read about the early history of the Pate family in North America (written by John Ben Pate), especially what is written about those from Major Thomas Pate to Rev. William Pate. I am a descendent of James D. Pate and Jane "Jincy" Moore, and James D. Pate was supposedly the son of a Rev. William Pate who married a Temperance "Tempty" Parkerson. Who was this Rev. William Pate? Was he a Revolutionary War soldier? Who was his father? Was he a descendent of Major Thomas Pate? Any assistance will be much appreciated. Jeremy Utt Powhatan, VA

    3. Alverne, The members of the Pate family that I mentioned were all from Georgia. 3. Pate, son of Rev. William Pate, was born in Pulaski County Ga., January 29th 1817, and in 1841 was married to Miss Jane Moore, who was born in Gwinett County, Ga., Oct. 12, 1825. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, with dark hair and gray eyes, and owned several farms, four hundred and seventy head of cattle, four hundred head of sheep, and one hundred head of hogs. He was a very liberal giver to charity and benevolence, and in one year gave eleven beeves, forty bushels of meal and two hundred and sixty pounds of bacon to widows, orphans and people too old to work. In 1858 he was a member of the first grand jury of Wilcox County. In a letter to his family, dated at Macon, Ga., Co. E, Fifth Ga. Reserves, Oct. 6, 1864, he speaks of Savannah, Charleston and Augusta. He writes of his mother as having lived in Augusta, of sickness in camp, of his son Bennett being with him. James (D.) Pate died of typhoid fever Aug. 28th, 1865; his property appraised at $8,325.00. Jincy Pate, his wife, died April 27th, 1887. The following children were born unto them: Bennett Pate, Oct. 2, 1842; Elijah M. Pate, Jan. 24, 1845; John T. Pate, Jan. 22, 1847; Mary Jane Wells, nee Pate, Nov. 12, 1848; Nancy Fitzgerald, nee Pate, May 14, 1851; Sarah Gibbs, nee Pate, April 20, 1854; Narcissa Moore Clements, nee Pate Aug. 2, 1858; Elizabeth Taylor, nee Pate, Feb. 29, 1856; James H. Pate, 1862; Benjamin Samuel Pate, April 23, 1864. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This family lived in Wilcox Co GA. Their homestead apparently was later incorporated into Irwin Co GA Only the elder sons of James D Pate, William Bennett Pate b 1842, Elijah D M Pate b 1845 and John Thomas Pate b 1847, were old enough to serve in the Civil War. Elijah D M Pate died (1860) before the war began. >From family correspondence and military records we learn that James D Pate and two of his sons, William Bennett Pate and John Thomas Pate served with Confederate units. James D Pate, the father, served in Company E, 5th GA Reserves (Infantry) William Bennett Pate, a son, served in Company B, 19th GA Cavalry (Later Company G, 10th Confederate Cav and 5th Confederate Battalion (Cav) John Thomas Pate, a son, - no clear record, beyond family tradition, that he served. Perhaps someone may have a more definitive record for him. Joel

    3. Greetings, I recently read that James Pate, husband of Jane "Jincy" Moore and father of a Confederate soldier named Bennett Pate, was conscripted into the Confederate military in the latter years of the WBTS. Does anybody know whether or not this is true? If so, can anyone tell me the military unit(s) in which James Pate served? The following is quoted from http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawilcox/pate_letters.htm: "By the end of the war James Pate, the father of the family was also conscripted despite the families petition to have him exempted. James and Bennett survived the war and made it home to Wilcox County. Sadly, James died August 28,1865 a short time after returning of typhoid fever leaving Jane and 14 children as survivors."
