Hello everyone, Interesting discussion.. I would like to ask if anyone would send me the names, dates, locations, etc., of all the other siblings of Willoughby, son of Shadrack. This is what I have below. I only have the sons. I would like to point out that Penelope was known as Pennina "Penny" who married John Peelle not Peale. Peelle is the original family spelling that goes all the way back to at least 1673. My great granddad dropped the second "l" from his signature. I have a news paper article and picture of Pennina and five generations of girls taken in Indiana. Note that I have Shadrack as the son of Charles (1729) who was the brother to Col Thoroughgood (1735). I have seen the tombstoneof his son, another Colonel Thor bron 1780... Horace Descendants of Shadrack Pate Generation No. 1 1. Shadrack5 Pate (Charles4, Charles3, Thoroughgood2, Thomas1) was born 1765 in Wayne Co., NC1, and died 24 Mar 1837 in Wayne Co., NC2. This is my family line. I have a lot of info. on this. My line is through the Shadrack and Willoughby Pate also. Willoughby's son Lewis had twins and my line is from the twin Martin Pate. -----Original Message----- From: Joel Pate [mailto:patej@nettally.com] Sent: Tuesday, September 06, 2005 10:06 PM To: PATE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PATE GENEALOGY] Willoughby Pate, son of Shadrack Pate >From MaryAnn Hormuth, a PATE-L subscriber, whose line includes: Shadrack Pate who had a son named Willoughby Pate, who had a son named Benagy "Ben" Pate who had had a son named William Nelson Pate who had a son named Andrew Liddon Pate, Sr. comes this question: "How sure are we that Shadrack is the father of Willoughby Pate?" I turned to two sources to try to find an answer to this question. Source 1: "PATE-ADAMS-NEWTON And Allied Families Principally In Richmond, Scotland and Robeson Counties In North Carolina And Marlboro County, South Carolina" by Julia Claire Pate, 1958. Julia Claire Pate wrote, on page 3 of her book- "Tradition is that Thoroughgood Pate's first wife was Winifred Stewart. By this marriage he had the following children: Willoughby Pate Samuel Pate Stephen Pate (who it is said went West) Thoroughgood Pate II" Julia Claire Pate offered nothing further to support this assertion. Source 2: "PATE PIONEERS ON THE PEE DEE RIVER" by J. R. Peacock, 1987. This document is a basic monograph with addenda released privately by Dr. Peacock. The question as to the parents of Willoughby Pate is dealt with in a most detailed manner on page 11 of the basic monograph. A partial transcript of page 11 follows: Start "11 The writer is indebted to Mrs. Nancy Taylor of Rocky Mount NC for much of the data on Shadrack. Shadrack lived most of his adult life in the Wayne County area known as "the Slough". He married Dicey Peacock. Peacock families also lived near the creek known as the Slough. The Census records of Wayne County for 1790 and 1800 indicate Shadrack had at least four sons, possibly five. His will, written 24May1837 (Wayne County Loose Estate Records) names only one - Shadrack, Jr. He named his wife, Dicey, and daughters named Selah Pate, Dicey Phillips, Christo Pate, Rebecca Wright, Penelopy Peale and Mary Robertson, in addition to the son Shadrack Jr. The reader will recall that Shadrack had sisters named Rebecca and Mary. Genealogists enter into hot debate over the possibility of other children when terms such as "all heirs" so not appear in old wills. There is good evidence that this family did not feel compelled to name all children. The will of the widow, Dicey, was dated Nov1838. She omitted two daughters, Christo Pate and Penelope Peale, who are named in Shadrack's will only a year earlier. The assumption is made here that Shadrack and Dicey had sons named Willoughby, John, Lewis, William and Shadrack Jr. Some basis for this assumption will be offered for Willoughby because he moved to the area of this subject, Pate Pioneers on the Pee Dee River, and because Julia Clair Pate considered he to be a son of Thor. and Winefred. Willoughby appears in the records of Wayne County on four occasions. Three of these were when he served as a witness to deeds for Shadrack. One, and possibly two, were prior to his marriage. The fourth record is the 1810 Census. The 1810 Census of Wayne County lists Shadrack, John, Lewis and Willoughby in adjacent households. Other Pates in the County were separated by some distance. His sister, Penelope, appears to have married Willis Peale. Among the names given to Willoughby's sons were Lewis and Willis. These would be for a brother and a brother-in-law. Among the names given to his daughters were Penelope and Mary. These were names of his sisters. The family bible of Willoughby is recorded in the files of Leonardo Andrea, who was identified earlier. The sons were Currington, Benjamin, Smithy, Lewis, Nicholas, Harris, Travis, and Willis. The daughters were Sarah, Mary, Rebecca, Penelope and Julaney." End In my OPINION, Jim Peacock is correct in his analysis and conclusions. Willoughby Pate was the son of Shadrach Pate and Dicey Peacock. Joel

I have placed Ruby's name & address on the web for this search, and another of our relatives, called it in to MS authorities. if anyone has access to any of these state births database, and can find any thing to help....then thanx a bunch... deborah -- No virus found in this outgoing message. BENSON-PATE-UZZELL-JOHNSON -- NC-TN-AR-MO-IN-TX 1790-1860 I am new to this list. I will apologize right up front for the ultra-long post but I hope those who have had an interest in reading it will be able to provide a lead for me or suggestions for further research. I will be most happy to share what I have. I am searching for my elusive 2nd great grandfather, CULLEN BENSON, born December 21, 1818??? in MO???. My research for Cullen Benson has placed him in NC, MO, TN, AR, IN and TX. I have a wealth of information on him after he came to Texas but prior to that time, it is guess work, with some very strong clues. I believe that he has some connection to the UZZELL family (possibly his mother or grandmother) since he named his first child William UZZEL Benson (the ZZ later changed to SS). Census records of Cullen Benson say he was born in MO. I know that some Uzzell families went to MO and some were acquainted with Bensons either in MO or in Old Dobbs and Wayne County, NC, but I have never been able to tie them together or my Cullen Benson to MO. Cullen Benson also had children named Thomas E., James Henry and Nancy Agnes, all names that appear in the UZZELL family. While Thomas, James and Nancy are pretty common names, CULLEN and UZZELL are not. There is also a William Henry Benson in Johnston Co., NC 1850 census with children that have very similiar names as my Cullen Benson, i.e., John Uzell, William Cullen, James Richard, and Nancy. In addition, Cullen and a James Benson, whom I believe to be his brother, both married into the PATE family in Hardeman Co., TN. There were also PATE families in early Wayne Co., NC. Exhausting all my leads in the Benson line, I have begun to look at other families and locations where he may have lived for clues on connections to a family, thus my post to this list. Here is what I know of my Cullen Benson and those that I “believe” are my Cullen Benson from the earliest known record: 1. 1835 - Hardeman Co., TN marriage records show a Cullin Benson marriage to Edny PATE bondsman Uzzell Benson. I do not know if this marriage was solemnized. 2. 1836 Cullin Benson is shown as the bondsman for the marriage of James Benson to Elizabeth PATE 3. 1839 - Hardeman Co., TN marriage records show a Cullen Benson marriage to a Margaret Parmer. This marriage was not solemnized in Hardeman Co. according to the County Clerk. 4. 1840 census for Hardeman Co, TN shows a Cullin Benson 30-40? with one female 20-30. Living in adjacent McNairy Co., TN are Uzzell, James R., Wright, and the elder, Etheldred/Eldred/Etheal D./Dred Benson, all of whom I believe are related in some way to Cullen Benson in Hardeman County, TN. They were all shown in later census records as being born in NC. The “elder” Benson is shown as Dred Benson in the 1800 Wayne Co. NC census 26-44 yrs, along with William, Willes, John and Hestre Benson . In 1810 Sampson NC as Dred 26-44 yrs. No record found for 1820. By 1830 he was in Hardeman Co., TN listed as Ethael D. 50-60 yrs. and in 1840 in McNairy Co., TN as Etheldred 60-70 yrs with a wife 50-60 yrs., the last record I can find. DID HE MARRY AN UZZELL? 5. 1844 Cullen Benson shows up in Saline Co., AR-marriage to Jane Johnson. I have a certified copy of this record from the County Clerk. 6. About 1846, Cullen Benson joins the service to fight in the Mexican War in AR (I have not found this record. A fellow Benson researcher provided this information. If anyone can confirm this I would be most grateful. He did serve but I have yet to determine what state he actually joined the military. His last wife, Nancy Noble Benson's application for pension for his service in the Mexican War indicates he joined to serve in the Mexican war in IN. I haven't been able to confirm that either. 7. 1850 Saline Co., AR census for Jane Benson shows her as a “widow”, living with a Hubbard family (probably her parents. I believe Johnson was her last name from a previous marriage since she had 4 children when she married Cullen Benson.) 8. 1850 Victoria Co., TX marriage records show Cullen Benson’s marriage to Nancy Noble(my line) 9. 1850 census for Victoria Co., TX shows Cullen Benson to be born in MO age 30 with wife Nancy J. age 23 10. 1860 Cullen Benson is in Burnet Co. TX, living next to his father-in-law and brother-in-laws. All are horse and cattle ranchers 11. 1864 Cullen is scalped and killed by Kiowa Indians while chopping wood on his land in Hoover's Valley, Burnet Co., TX Thanks in advance for any help. It is much appreciated. There just has to be a marriage between the Benson and Uzzell lines somewhere around the late 1700s to early 1800s to about 1815. There are just too many Benson lines that have children with UZZELL in their names around that time. HELP!!! Alice Benson in Austin, Texas a descendant of......
