I am of the opinion Newell W and Gilbert G are brothers. Gilbert G. Pate is my gg-grandfather. They tended to move around in several counties after they came to TX. Guess I was getting the two mixed up. The Pate cemetery in Scotland County NC (it being formed in 1899 off of Richmond county) is a very elaborate cemetery with lots of big stones. Beautiful although it is getting over grown some. Willoughby 1790-1834 is buried there. Wayne County is about 150 miles away to the northeast. My ancestor Robert Peele also came from Wayne county to the same area, seems that there were some movement there but there is another set of Pates in Scotland County living there who was from the brother of your Charles Pate the Rev, primarily Colonel Thoroughgood Pate...... His son another Colonel Thoroughgood Pate is buried in what is called the Old Pate Cemetery just outside a town of Gibson, NC which was supposed started by the Pates. Bill, et al, FYI I have another Lewis Pate who is the son of Willoughby born in 1819. For years the Z V Pate store in that town was the center point of all cotton farming, ginning, etc for that area. I have been there many times as a child. Lewis Pate left a will which is in the N.C. archives. In it, Lewis lists a son, Willoughby. Others, notably (for me at least) Billie Evans of Garland, N.C., have listed a brother of Lewis as being Willoughby Pate. I have not pursued the lines of brother Willoughby or Lewis' son Willoughby, but in records I remember seeing, I believe Willoughby, son of Lewis, was the father of the twins Mark and Martin Pate. Several years ago, I met the mother of ex-congressman Martin Lancaster at a Pate reunion in Goldsboro. She told me she was descended from Martin Pate for whom (I presume) Lancaster got his first name. I do know that Willoughby Pate is in a number of records, the dates of which would indicate they refer to the later of these two Willoughbys. One or more of them refer to transactions with at least one of the twins also. I'm sorry I haven't put the records I've seen in my computer. They're buried in paper files. My own Pate family cemetery was (some years back when I visited it) in a tobacco field on a farm near Memorial Primitive Baptist Church. I assume though that the Pate Cemetery mentioned here is somewhere else. Is it listed in the Wayne cemeteries book? My uncle did some of the early research and he has that Willoughby was Shadrack and Dicey's son and so do a couple of other Pate researchers that are right here in Patetown. I don't have anything on Willoughby in my files except that he married Aseneath "Teney" Smith. I got some info. from another Pate researcher that there is a Willoughby Pate buried in the Pate Cemetery, Bennettsville, SC and that the inscription on the tombstone is "First Trustee of Piney Grove Church 1833". I wonder if anyone can on the Pate List has a match to this Willoughby. My line is one of Shadrack and Dicey's other sons Lewis who had a son named Willoughby that married Nancy Peacock. There is a Pate document on ebay under the title: "Genealogy Antique document Pate of Hope Flintshire 1866" refers to Ellen Pate the wife of Owen Pate
Christoper & Joel - I see I've corresponded with Chris before, so don't have anything new on these families, and looks like Joel has it right. The only thing I can add is that Clarence Morton Pate, Sr married a second time to a Nell (maiden name unknown) And I'm not sure Jeremiah Pate (c 1745-1797) was married to Mary BENDER. There is a marriage of Jeremiah to a Bender, but I'm not sure they are one and the same. This Jeremiah Pate died 1797 in Botetourt Co, VA. These families are on my Pate webpage under the Desc Chart P-64, but think it only goes down to John Pate md Jennett Crawford. If I can help further, let me know. Chris: Jinks is by far the best authority on the Edward Pate- Martha Tinsley line. I offer this as speculation: Edward Pate and Martha Tinsley Jeremiah Pate and Mary H "Polly" Bender John C Pate and Jennett "Jane" Crawford John Allen Pate and Matilda Harriet Morton Edward Samuel Pate and Anna Martha "Mattie" Hodges Clarence M (Morton) Pate Sr and Gertrude I (b Canada Dec 1871) Clarence M (Morton) Pate Jr [The "M" in Clarence M Pate appears as Morton in one record.
