    1. [PATE GENEALOGY] - "Margery" and PATE families in Southern IL (mostly adopted)
    2. ~CSWR~
    3. I don't know if I have posted this data in a while, so thought I had better do it. -- My primary search is for 2nd great-grandmother: *Margery/Margaret "Martha" PATE*, born 1780-1785, Washington Co. VA [*not* Marjorie EDMONDS b. 1792 TN, d. 1882 MO, who married Minter HOLLOWAY b.1788 TN, migrated to MO abt. 1843. This information does NOT apply to our subjects: John "Minter" HOLLOWAY and MARGERY PATE. - It is easy to be confused with the similar birthdates/names, however, our Margery's father is MATHEW PATE (not Edmonds); and is later confirmed by Ruth Moab's son, MATTHEW PATE SISTLER being a namesake of his maternal grandfather. Also, our Minter and Margery PATE-HOLLOWAY were born about 6 years earlier, and migrated out of TN to IL about 10 yrs. later]. - Margery was married to J. [John] "Minter" HOLLOWAY about 1845, probably in Monroe Co. TN and had 10 children in the 1830 TN Census, before they migrated with some family in early 1853 to southern IL (Pope County). Both Minter and Margery, at that time were about age 70. Ruth Moab's first child, John Minter Holloway, b. 1846 died in infancy. Also, with Minter and Margery were cousins Burton W. HOLLOWAY and his large family. Family records indicate that she: 1. is the daughter of Mathew PATE, b. 1738 and indeed - 2. named her 3rd eldest daughter Ruth Moab Holloway, b. Apr 1824 at Monroe Co, TN. Ruth Moab Holloway is my great-grandmother. - 3. Ruth Moab named her son (my grandfather) Mathew PATE SISTLER, Margery's father and brother were both named "Mathew PATE", and, Mathew named his daughter (my Aunt): Ruth Moab SISTLER. Mathew was b. June 1855 in Pope Co, IL. Ruth Moab HOLLOWAY married Thomas Wm. A. SISTLER/SITZLER, and Ruth Moab's first child, John Minter SISTLER, b. 1846-1850, died young; but she had at least 7 other Holloway-Pate children that survived her. Ruth's only daughter was named, Margery "Martha" SISTLER. - 4. Her brother John A. HOLLOWAY, married Thos. Wm.'s twin sister.... Mary Jane SITZLER, who also migrated to So. IL with other SISTLER/SITZLER, and HOLLOWAY family. - 5. In the 1860 U.S.Census, both Minter and Margery (PATE) HOLLOWAY were elderly and residing with daughter and son inlaw, both at age 77 . Their daughter, Ruth Moab, died in 1862 and Ruth's parents and Holloway-Pate relatives disappear after that time. ================= HERE IS MORE UNRELATED INFO ON PATE families in Southern IL: [my notes, excuse format] --- PATE biographies of Pope County, IL - Historical Society "History and Families 1816-1995": (Volume One) ---> So. 3. Helen, Is there anything you can tell me about Lucy? I've been searching for quite some time to find about my Jeremiah Pate who married his first cousin, "Lucy". My "Lucy" or Lucinda was born ca 1797 in NC or TN according to 1850 and 1860 census. Helen Pate Ross <ross@empowering.com> wrote: I have four children for Hardy Pate of Sussex Co VA. 3. I think this is my line of Pates from Wayne County, North Carolina. I'll check my paperwork this weekend and email you back. I do know that I have Ms. Parkersons name as Tempy. That was a very common name in NC. I have several Tempys in my lines. -----Original Message----- From: Jeremy Utt [mailto:jeremy_utt@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, January 19, 2006 10:53 PM To: PATE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PATE GENEALOGY] Pate Information Hello Folks, I have just discovered an interesting website with Pate family information: http://www5.familytreemaker.com/users/r/u/s/Pate--Russ/GENE2-0003.html The person who placed Pate information on this site is certainly at odds with John Ben Pate's account of the Pate genealogy. 3. Dear Pate Researchers, I am currently trying to establish the parent-child connection between James David Pate (b: 29 Jan 1817 in Pulaski Co.,GA) and his parents Rev. William Pate and Tempty Parkerson. I have John Ben Pate as a source, but I need at least one primary document (i.e. will, administration of an estate, census record, etc.) that would establish the connection of James David Pate to his parents. I would appreciate your assistance. Jeremy Utt Williamsburg, VA

    3. Jeremy, Regarding the powder horn, I was citing from 1958 DAR application of Mrs. Hettie Pate Snelling for acceptance in DAR on service of Rev. William Pate. She gives as her references to military service: 1. Family tradition and history, compiled by John Ben Pate, Amboy, Georgia. 2. Records in the Adjutant General's office, Washington, D.C. [Although cited as proof, no proof is actually given showing that this was the same William Pate.] 3. Relics of the Revolution in family possessions used by Rev. Wm. Pate. See Nat'l No. 133634 Supplemental to Nat. No. 90788 add 99. For her lineage Mrs. Snelling cites totally Nat. #133634. The earliest DAR papers were essentially unproven, so this line although still open would not hold up to today's DAR standards even though it has been accepted repeatedly as an established line. Family tradition and undocumented history would never be accepted if proving a line today. John Ben Pate in his "American Genealogy of the Pate Family," on page 9 says: "The old powder horn then used [referring to military service of Wm Pate] is in the possession of A. and S. E. Pate, Amboy, Ga." This would have been about 1917, so the question remains, does it still exist and if so, who has it? Perhaps you can help locate it. What I think and this is my opinion, not proven, is that the powder horn if Wm Pate's was used 1814 when he served in Capt Kellams Pulaski Co Ga militia, or if it is of Revolutionary war era was used by Jacob Parkerson, and during the years since then someone became confused as to which "grandfather" it originally belonged to. It appears to me that William Pate was born abt 1770/1780. He would have been just a child during the war years even if the earliest birth date is used. I am a descendant of Samuel Pate, the purported son of Rev. William Pate; however, I can find no proof of this. In fact my records seem to indicate that although maybe related, not a father/son relationship. I pursued Jacob Parkerson in hopes of finding more data on my Samuel Pate. You are certainly welcome for the information. 3. Lindy, I am very thankful for your information. Thanks for the documentation of Rev. Jacob Parkerson's military service, and other information about his life. Your email was the first reference to a Revolutionary War era powder horn that I have heard of being passed down through the Pate family. I would certainly like to know who has it. I would very much appreciate a photograph of this powder horn for my records. What is known about this powder horn? FYI, I am copying this email to William Nash (Registrar of Richmond (VA) Chapter SAR, who is helping me with the Rev. Jacob Parkerson application) and Karen Utt (maiden name Pate, who is my mother). 3. Joel, It has been sufficiently proven for the DAR. A lady named Rosa Louise Tyson submitted what I believe to be a Supplemental Application to the DAR that was verified and approved on June 20, 1985 by the Registrar General. I have a copy of this application, and I am using it as one piece of evidence in my SAR Supplemental Application. Just because the DAR has recognized Rev. Jacob Parkerson as a Revolutionary War soldier does not necessarily mean that he was. However, there is evidence to suggest that this might have been the case. The following were listed as sources of proof on the DAR supplemental: "Roster of the American Revolution: Soldiers in Georgia" by McCall p. 93 Vol. 2 pub 1968 (In NSDAR Library) "Virginians in the Revolution" by John H. Gwathmey pub. 1938 p. 604 "Roster of Soldiers from North Carolina in the American Revolution" pub. 1932 p. 153 pub by NSDAR (In NSDAR Library) Even if Rev. Jacob Parkerson was not a soldier, he could still serve as a qualifying ancestor for someone wishing to join the SAR (certainly) or DAR (I think). The SAR, unlike the SR, recognizes people as qualifying ancestors who served the patriot cause in other ways than as soldiers. For example, if one could document that am ancestor provided money or supplies to the patriot cause (but did not serve in a direct military capacity as a soldier), the descendent would qualify for SAR membership, but not SR membership (as far as I know). So, even if Rev. Jacob Parkerson was "just" a chaplain for a patriot military force, he would have been providing a service, and would probably qualify for SAR. 1. William Riley Pate
    2. Susan Beddes
    3. I am still seeking information on William Riley Pate, born around 1808 in Tennessee. He married sisters, first Eliza Davis and then Nancy Davis Garrett. His parents may have been William and Elizabeth Pate. His children (with Eliza)--John Andrew or Anderson Pate, Louisa or Eliza Jane Pate, James Harvey Pate, Martha Kerdelia Pate. His children (with Nancy)--Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" Pate, Daniel Robert Pate, and Caroline Olive Pate. Is anyone researching this line?

    3. Jeremy, Henrietta was born in Emanuel County, Georgia on 18 Jun 1847. Her parents were Irwin and Cynthia Coleman Kirkland. She died 7 Jun 1906. She and husband John Thomas Pate are buried at Oklahoma Baptist Church Cemetery located near the border of Crisp, Wilcox, and Turner Counties. I think that the cemetery is actually in Crisp. Jacob Parkerson.  The James David Pate mentioned in the subject line is (I believe) the son of Tempty Parkerson (and her husband Rev. William Pate), and the grandson of Rev. Jacob Parkerson. Would anyone be able and willing to share 1850 U.S. Census information that shows the family of James David Pate and Jane Moore?  I believe that I am descended from them through their son John Thomas Pate (first married, I believe, to Henrietta Kirkland). 3. Joel, Thanks for the information. I appreciate any help that can be given to aid me in my search for information on my Pate ancestors. You do not sound totally confident that Irwin Kirkland and Cynthia Coleman Kirkland are the parents of Henrietta Kirkland. What documentation do you have at your disposal, besides the census information (1850 U.S. Census)? 3. Dan, Thanks for the information. I greatly appreciate it. Do you have evidence/proof that what you have said is true? I have no reason to doubt you, but I would like to have evidence/proof for my records. By the way, are you suggesting that Cynthia's maiden name was Coleman? 3. Jeremy: John Thomas Pate b 22 Jan 1847 d 24 Feb 1924 married Henrietta Kirkland b 28 Jun 1847 d 7 Jun 1906. Most researchers use 19 Jan 1867 as their date of marriage and Dooly Co GA as their place of marriage, however there is a note on the marriage license that their vows were exchanged in front of James Owen J.I.C., Wilcox Co GA [J.I.C. = Judge, Inferior Court]. John Thomas Pate and Henrietta Kirkland Pate are both buried in marked graves in Oklahoma Cemetery, Wilcox Co GA. In my opinion Henrietta Kirkland was the daughter of Irvin and Sinthy Kirkland. See 1850 census of Emanuel Co GA, page 450B, 28th Dist, site 94/94. This opinion is supported by the fact that the first child of John Thomas Pate and Henrietta Kirkland was a daughter name Cynthia Jane Pate 22 Apr 1868-1 Jul 1934. She, no doubt, was named for her maternal grandmother. The third child of John Thomas Pate and Henrietta Kirkland was a son, William (Sheep) Bennett Pate 2 Dec 1872-5 Jan 1960. William (Sheep) Bennett Pate married twice and had children with both wives. He first married (24 Jul 1892 Dooly Co) to Victoria V Love and second to (1906 Turner Co) to Sarah Maud Odom. William (Sheep) Bennett Pate and Victoria V Love had two children, the first was a son named Addie Lee (Boy) Pate b Oct 1896 d 24 Jul 1966. Addie Lee (Boy) Pate married Viola (Ola) Gilbert. They married ca 1914 in GA. Addie Lee Pate and Viola Gilbert had several children (8 I think). Your grandfather, William Bennett Pate b 24 Dec 1924 d 25 Jul 1990 was a son of Addie Lee Pate. As you probably know, William Bennett Pate 1924-1990 relocated from GA to Richmond, VA where he married in 1946.
