    3. CONFEDERATE ALABAMA TROOPS 13th Regiment, Alabama Infantry 13th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in July, 1861, at Montgomery, Alabama. Men of this unit were from the counties of Coosa, Wilcox, Macon, Butler, Talladega, Montgomery, Randolph, Elmore, and Tallapoosa. Ordered to Virginia, it served under General Rains at Yorktown, and in April, 1862, contained 474 effectives. Later the 13th was assigned to General Colquitt's, Archer's, Sanders', and W.H. Forney's Brigade, Army of the Northern Virginia. It participated in many conflicts from [1]Williamsburg to [2]Cold Harbor, then fought in the long [3]Petersburg siege south of the James River and the campaign that ended at [4]Appomattox. This regiment reported 52 casualties at [5]Seven Pines, 101 during the Seven Days' Battles, and 140 at [6]Chancellorsville. Of the 308 engaged at [7]Gettysburg, over half were disabled. It surrendered with 6 officers and 85 men on April 9, 1865. The field officers were Colonels James Aiken and B.D. Fry; Lieutenant Colonels William H. Betts, R.H. Dawson, S.B. Marks, and Julius C.B. Mitchell; and Major John T. Smith. 3. http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Marguerite-Pate&lc=1823&mid=4291146 - Photo available Marguerite Castleberry (Castleberry) Pate Marguerite (Castleberry) Pate, 83, of Lufkin, was born to the late Mollie (Sloan) and Clifton Castleberry on November 18, 1926, in Bradley County, Arkansas. She passed away Friday, June 18, 2010, at Hospice in the Pines. >From early on, all who knew Marguerite (Rite) saw a lively and engaging person. On many pages of her high school yearbook, Rite's bright face smiles out from photos of the pep squad, glee club, cheerleading troupe, and basketball teams. While in high school, she met and later married William Eldridge Pate (Pate), and from then on, she devoted her energies to being a meticulous housekeeper and fantastic cook. Rite's only employment outside the home were a stint at a soda fountain while Pate attended business school in Missouri soon after they married and as a Welcome Wagon representative for a short while during their many years together in Shreveport, LA. Rite would reminisce about her youth, but she refused to dwell on it. Instead, she looked forward, trying to stay informed and abreast of current affairs, popular culture, and fashion trends. It was important to Rite to maintain her appearance, and she was a believer in Mary Kay cosmetics, made sure her nails were polished, had an affinity for bright lipstick and colorful clothes, and constantly fretted about her hair. She was adventurous and inquisitive and dabbled in activities as diverse as yoga, golf, and line dancing. Rite was a member of Redland Baptist Church and had been involved in church activities and ministries before her health began to decline. Among the many things she enjoyed about life were her flower gardens, traveling, working with ceramics when she was younger, and her dogs, the most recent being her companion cocker spaniel Missy. There was no Elvis admirer more ardent than Rite. For many years, she regularly played dominoes with her friends, and her great-nieces remember the fun they had playing games during their summer visits as well as the world-class sweet tea she served. Rite's happy spirit and zest for life will be missed. She is survived by her sisters, Madrid Madden of Crossett, Arkansas; sister and brother-in-law, Vada and Travis Kenneth Hickman of Baytown; nieces, Jan Hill and husband Russell of Helena, Montana, and Joy Hickman of Albuquerque, New Mexico; nephew, John Hickman of Baytown; great-nieces, Emma Hill, Anna Hill, and Amy Woods-Montoya; and great-great nephews, Joseph Montoya and Mark Dean Johnson III. Mrs. Pate was preceded in death by her husband, William Eldridge Pate, in November 1986. Services for Mrs. Pate will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2010 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Bros. Alex Montilla and Ty Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Gann Cemetery. Friends are invited to gather and celebrate Marguerite's life from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at Gipson Funeral Home. 2. I do not know how long pilot.familysearch.org has been on line but a few days ago I lucked onto that website and found a death certificate for the illusive Wm. D. Pate, of Weleetka, OK. We have been looking for when and where he died for almost 15 years. The death certificate does not show up on the regular familysearch.org website. I do not know what the difference is between the two but I highly recommend the pilot website if you don't find what you need on the other two websites listed below. 3. I have a question for anyone who would care to contribute information on genealogy research. I have a friend who wants to start searching his "roots". He asked what gen sites he should join. He wanted to know which site had the best information for the money. It has been years since I have really dug. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I have already cautioned about undocumented records. I wish someone had been frank with me about record keeping back in 1985 when I started. Thanks, Grace Wisdom

    1. [PATE] OT topic Trivia
    2. As I was reading your post on some Pate names, I remember a trivia that you will find interesting. The Joseph Pate who married (famous marrying lady) Melinda had a daughter and was named Johanna Josephine Pate. She married Virgil Stewart Maddox and their first born was a son named James Benjamin Franklin Maddox. On the 21st birthday of Frank (this is is the name he used) his mother gave him a pocket watch. The watch has inscription that reads something like "to my son on his 21st birthday. I do not recall the exact wording but it was appraised by a jeweler and some day will go to our son and thus goes out of lineage as regards the Pate name. Life is full of twists and turns. ellen

    1. [PATE] Civil War Records -- Another source
    2. John Robinson
    3. Noticed the reference to Footnote allowing free access to their Civil War records. Just wanted to mention the two following, always free, sites. 1. The National Park Service has a website devoted to the Civil War, or as we in the South say, the War of Northern Aggression: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html Quick search for Georgia gets 88 Pates. What I always tell folks, you need to know that your ancestor served, which unit, then find the records. It's very difficult to document service if you don't already know that info. They also had a bad habit of using initials, makes things difficult. 2. If your ancestor did something really good or bad, or you just want info about an incident (Battle), Cornell University has "The War of the Rebellion" online: http://digital.library.cornell.edu/m/moawar/waro.html
