    3. I had a good friend who was nicknamed Jack (why, I don't know). His given name was Gordon. On the other hand, my uncle, John Calvin Smith III was nicknamed Jack. Another uncle whose given name was Gordon was nicknamed Pete. Go figure. 3. I found this very interesting thought I would share, perhaps many of you already knew this anyway.  This is according to Ancestry Com, "Pay special attention to the columns designating color and place of birth. You may find a Native American ancestor listed as I, In, Ind, B (black) or M for mulatto. It might change from census to census." Donna Hassan

Sharlotte -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Joel Pate Sent: Saturday, July 10, 2010 10:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PATE] Are William James Pate and William Pate Downs of Georgia the same person? Sharlotte Where might I find a record of a man named William Pate Downs? William James Pate, the son of Mary Amelia Murrow Pate, born 1842 in Twiggs Co, GA died 1886 in Byran Co, GA. This William James Pate was enumerated, along with his sister Edna Josephine Pate, in the 1850 census of Effingham Co, GA in the household of John Murrow, his maternal grandfather. He was listed as William Pate age 8. In 1860 William James Pate was enumerated in Bryan Co., GA as William Pate age 17 in the household of J B Downs, probably Isaiah B Downs husband of Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs. In 1860 the sister of William James Pate, Edna Josephine Pate, was also enumerated in Byran Co., GA with her husband, Emmett Downs, brother of Isaiah B Downs. I have found no trace of William James Pate in the 1870 census of Georgia. There is a 10 Jun 1866 marriage license record in Bryan Co, GA for a William J Pate and an Ann Francis Lanier. I have found nothing further on this couple. There is a 24 Sep 1874 marriage license record in Bryan, Co, GA. for a William Pate and Susannah P Worley. In 1880 William James Pate was enumerated in Bryan Co, GA as William J Pate age 38, head of household. Others in the household were Susan Pate, wife age 36; Raymond Pate, son age 4; William Pate, son age 3; Susan Pate, daughter age 2; and Roberta Pate, daughter age 2m (DOB recorded as Sep 1879. Raymond Pate in this census record is Raymond Colon Pate Sr., 11 Dec 1876-20 Jan 1956 (Chatham Co, GA).Roberta Pate here is Roberta Ruth Pate b Sep 1879. In my OPINION William James Pate 1842-1886 did not use the Downs surname. Perhaps someone incorrectly attributed that surname to him at one time or another. Here is the census record profile for Raymond Colon Pate Sr , 11 Dec 1876-20 Jan 1956 CENSUS 1880 Bryan Co, GA - Page 409 ED 6, sheet 11, Dist 19, site 80/83 w/ Parents 1900 Bryan Co, GA - ED 3, sheet 9, GMD 1137, site 123/147 1910 Chatham Co, GA - ED 48, sheet 8B, Savannah, site 140/237 1920 Chatham Co, GA - ED 97, sheet 1A In 1918 he registered for the draft in Chatham Co, GA - abstract of card-- WWI Draft Registration, Chatham co, GA - 12 Sep 1918 Name: Raymond Colon Pate County: Chatham State: Georgia Birth Date: 11 Dec 1876 Race: White Reside: 68 Route B, Ogeechee, Chatham Co, GA Occupation: Farmer Employer: Self Next of Kin: Laura Pate (relationship not specified - presumably wife Residence of Relative: 70 Route B, Ogeechee, Chatham Co, GA Height: Tall Build: Stout Eyes: Gray Hair: Brown/gray Disability: None Raymond Colon Pate Sr 1876-1938 had at least one son, Raymond Colon Pate Jr 14 Oct 1902 Chatham Co, GA d 9 Mar 1972, Volusia Co, FL. I have not been able to research this family further, but if there is a Pate male descendant, it would be interesting and informative to have him participate in the Pate DNA Project Sharlotte, you had asked, in an earlier e-mail, what DNA analysis had shown about the family of Samuel Pate, supposed son of Rev William Pate. I suggest you search the archives of the Pate List Serve - Start with -http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/pate/2009-09/1251812157 I join Lindy Hard in her position on Joseph S Pate 1815-1868. I am not convinced that the Samuel Pate who married Mary Amelia Murrow and the Samuel Pate who married Mary Jane Carraway are the same man! William James Pate's stepfather (and Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs' second husband) was Isaiah Benjamin Downs? And does anyone know where he is buried? Thanks, Sharlotte

    1. [PATE] Mary Jane Carraway Pate at Find-a-Grave?
    2. Donnelly
    3. Hi, I hope someone descended from Joseph S. Pate's second wife, Mary Jane Carraway Pate, will add her at Find a Grave (http://www.findagrave.com). It's free. Thanks, Sharlotte -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Donnelly Sent: Saturday, July 10, 2010 11:23 AM To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Re: [PATE] Joseph S. Pate, Sr. at Find-a-Grave Hi, Lindy and all Pate family genealogists, I have some comments and questions for Pate family genealogists. You are right, Lindy, that Bulloch County is just one theory for Joseph Pate. Here is my proposed revision: Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr. was born about 1815 probably in either North Carolina or Georgia. On June 7, 1838 in Twiggs County, Georgia, he married his first wife Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs (buried at Liberty Chapel Cemetery in Bryan County, Georgia). They had two children: Edna Josephine Pate Downs and William James Pate. When the couple separated, and Joseph went on to remarry and leave the state, children in the family were told the lie that while delivering the mail between Savannah and Louisville, Georgia Joseph and his horse disappeared in Shivers Swamp, never to be seen again. For a time his children lived with their maternal grandparents, John Murrow and Mary Amelia L. Badger Murrow. In fact on August 17, 1846 in Early County, Georgia, Joseph married Mary Jane Carraway (buried somewhere in Texas), and they had seven children: Martha A. ("Mary Ellen") Pate Derrick and William Jackson Pate, both born in Georgia; Charles Thomas Pate, born in Mississippi; and Rebecca Martha Pate Bass, Joseph Samuel Pate, Jr., James Benton Pate, and Nancy A. Pate Goen, all born in Texas. Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr. died at about age 53 in 1868 in Tyler County, Texas and is probably buried in an unmarked grave in either Campground Cemetery or Magnolia Cemetery in Tyler County, Texas. What else should I add to the above? Does anyone know for sure where Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr. was born? Do we know that Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr. was Samuel Pate's son? Did DNA testing disprove that father/son relationship? Could Joseph legally be Samuel's son without being his biological son? What were Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr.'s accomplishments in Texas? Were he or his sons veterans? Thanks, Sharlotte -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Lindy Hard Sent: Saturday, July 10, 2010 9:37 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PATE] Joseph S. I have not tracked them back into Bulloch Co, but have not looked in that direction. As you know, Samuel Pate supposedly 1st married to a Weathersby which may or may not be true. I know that the Samuel Pate who is said to be Joseph's father acquired land in Twiggs Co GA between 12 Nov 1808 and the 1818 Twiggs Co GA tax digest. The first land I have proof of him owning (75 acres of #46, 27th dist) was drawn by James Moore of Cockran's Battn, Jackson Co GA in the 1807 land lottery and granted to him (Moore) 12 Nov 1808. THE FOLLOWING IS OF INTEREST, BUT NOT A PROVEN CONNECTION TO SAMUEL PATE OF TWIGGS. In 1810, a Stephen & Mary Weathersby are in Twiggs Co GA, becoming members of Stone Creek Baptist Church. In 1812 a Judy Weathersby joins the church & in 1814 a Cathy Weathersby joins the church. This Weathersby (Weathersbee) family moved to GA from Barnwell Co SC after the 1800 census. Before that they are supposed to be from Martin Co NC (not my research). By 1830 census, Stephen Wethersby is in Houston Co GA and in 1831 or 1832 buys land in Randolph Co GA. He is on the 1840 census, Randolph Co GA age 60-70. He is old enough to have been the father of Samuel Pate's 1st wife, but this is not proven and is just a possibility. Stephen Wethersby dies in Randolph Co Ga before the 1850 census. More research needs to be done in Randolph Co GA for estate records, etc for Stephen Wethersby family. If Joseph Pate was born in Bulloch Co that changes the search strategy. My Stephen S Pate b 1823 Twiggs Co GA (said to be brother to your Joseph Pate) married Margaret McKinnon in 1846 in Randolph Co GA. They lived in Stewart Co GA 1850 and then settled in Randolph Co GA. 3. Sharlotte, you are just as much a descendent of Joseph S. Pate, and you have the information...just go ahead and post his memorial on Find a Grave yourself. If any other descendent has anything to add, they can add it by posting flowers. There is nothing that dictates who can post a memorial and who can't. I am one of many who volunteers and post for Find a Grave. Alverne Hi, Joel and all Pate family genealogists, Because he is my ancestor, I would like to add a listing for Joseph S. 3. I am a member of the Thoroughgood group in the Pate DNA project. My last known and confirmed grandfather was Joseph Pate 1817 - 1871 NC from the Greys Creek area of NC. After my DNA test results we thought we tracked my great, great grandfather to a Joseph Pate 1787 - 1847 the son Isham Pate 1750 -1840. After looking at the information again of Joseph's son Joseph Pate 1828 - 1886 I came to the conclusion this probably was not my great, great grandfather as once thought. This conclusion comes from the birth year and death year. My Joseph Pate's mother was Echa Pate that married John B. Davis from Robeson County NC. That is the last mentioning of her. Through Cumberland County NC court records it is shown Joseph was given to a Alfred Jackson as a apprentice and servant to the age of 21. This man may have also been a Pate. There is a mentioning of Joseph living with his uncle that was a Alfred Jackson Pate. There is no mentioning of whom Joseph's father was or where he and his mother came from. Also my Joseph Pate served in the confederate army if that is of any help. If anyone can give me any information it would be much appreciated. 1. [PATE] Joseph S. Pate, Sr. at Find-a-Grave
    2. Donnelly
    3. Hi, Joel and all Pate family genealogists, Because he is my ancestor, I would like to add a listing for Joseph S. Pate, Sr. (1815-1868) at the Find-a-Grave site (http://www.findagrave.com). I have a bunch of graves at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=mr <http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=mr&GRid=17213186&MRid=1919911 8> &GRid=17213186&MRid=19199118&. Before I add a listing for Joseph, however, I have some questions of the group. >Would it be better if one of you (a descendent of his second wife), rather than I (a descendent of his first wife), established the site? >Is the draft of what I have below accurate? >What other information should be added to the draft? Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr. was born about 1815 in the Bulloch County area of Georgia. When the couple separated, and Joseph went on to remarry and leave the state, children in the family were told the lie that while delivering the mail between Savannah and Louisville, Georgia he and his horse disappeared in Shivers Swamp, never to be seen again. In fact on August 17, 1846 in Early County, Georgia, Joseph married Mary Jane Carraway (buried somewhere in Texas), and they had seven children: Martha A. Pate Derrick and William Jackson Pate, both born in Georgia; Charles Thomas Pate, born in Mississippi; and Rebecca Martha Pate Bass, Joseph Samuel Pate, Jr., James Benton Pate, and Nancy A. Pate Goen, all born in Texas. Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr. died in 1868 in Tyler County, Texas and is probably buried in an unmarked grave in either Campground Cemetery or Magnolia Cemetery in Tyler County, Texas.
