    1. Re: [PATE] Obituary - Virgie Viola Pate b. 1881, d. 1957
    2. Hi Joel, Good to see you back with us. Yes, Virginia "Virgie" Viola Cullins Pate was wife of John Robert Pate, who was son of Bird and Susan Hankins Pate. Several years ago, I obtained these obituaries on the Bird and Susan Hankins Pate's family from Mr. McGarr in Weleetka. For years, Mr. McGarr and his wife scoured newspaper archives both locally and in Oklahoma City, OK, for obituaries of Okfuskee Co., OK, residents and probably for others, also. He was kind enough to share obituaries of both sides of Bill's birth family. At the time I thought Mr. McGarr was being coy with me since what I really wanted was an obituary on Wm. D. Pate, giving us a death date. Apparently there is no obituary for him. When he died in 1951 there may have been no one still alive in the family close enough to him to care. His death certificate, which we recently obtained, states he was shipped back to Weleetka for burial and he is listed as "Bill Pate" in the cemetery records. The one really surprising statement was in Susan Hankins Pate's obituary stating she had 3 sons and 2 daughters. Even Jinks didn't know about the 3rd son. Perhaps it was a still-born or died young. Bird Pate was still living and perhaps gave the obituary information. Thanks for the comments. Sometimes the obits don't give enough information. Sometimes obituaries are a goldmine of information and sometimes they are wrong. I made several vital errors in my own mother's obituary. Once out, difficult to correct. Hope you are recovering well and taking it slow. We need your insight and input. 1. [PATE] Obituary of Melvin Odell Pate b. 1904, d. 1947
    2. Former Weleetka Man Passes Away in Texas Melvin Odell Pate, of Snyder, Texas, died at his home Saturday after a brief illness with pneumonia. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Pate of this city. He was born in Weleetka, August 12, 1904. He grew to manhood here at Weleetka, and married Miss Lillian Ellison November 11, 1927. They made their home here until 1929, when they moved to Lucky, Okla., and then in 1938 moved to Eunice, New Mexico. In 1946, they moved to Snyder, Texas. He had been employed in the oil fields for a good many years. Survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Pate;, the wife, Mrs. Lillian Pate; and one brother, Marvin Pate of Edmond, and a neice (sic) and nephew. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. O. Bigabie (sic), pastor of the First Baptist church, Monday afternoon at 2;30 p.m., and the internment was made in the Hillcrest cemetery, Weleetka Funeral Home in charge.

    1. [PATE] Obituary for Marvin Pate b. 1908, d. 1950
    2. Funeral Rites Held For Marvin Pate Marvin Pate, 42, residing the past years in Edmond, Okla, was born at Hobson, south of Weleetka, April 12, 1908, and died April 24, 1950, suddenly of a heart attack. Mr. Pate's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Pate moved from Hobson to Weleetka where he graduated from the Weleetka High School. In March 26, 1930, Marvin Pate married the former Miss Madeline Capart, at Weleetka. Funeral Rites for Marvin Pate were held Wednesday, 2:30 o'clock, at the First Baptist Church. Service were under the direction of the Weleetka Funeral Home, with Rev. H. D. Stephens, officiating. Internment was made at the Weleetka Cemetery. Survivors are his wife, Madeline, daughter Phyllis Jean, son, R. T. Pate and mother, Mrs. J. R. Pate. Nita's notes: Wm. D. Pate, brother of J. R. Pate, uncle of Marvin and Melvin Pate, is not noted as a survivor in this obituary also although he didn't die until 1951. The family may not have known where he was and presumed him deceased. Wm. D.'s death certificate states he was living in the Ardmore, OK, Veterans Home for 3 years prior to his death September 14, 1951 at the Veterans Hospital at McKinney, Texas.

    1. [PATE] Obit - John Robert Pate - b. 1880, d. 1948 and commentary
    2. John Robert Pate Pioneer Citizen Passes Away J. R. Pate, who came to Weleetka community in 1900, died at the family home in this city Sunday after being in ill health for several months. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. O. Bigbie at the First Baptist church Tuesday afternoon and the internment was made in the Hillcrest cemetery, the Weleetka Funeral Home in charge. John Robert Pate was the son of Bird and Susan Pate of Jamestown, Ark, and was born July 4th, 1880. He married Virginia Cullens in 1899. The family came to Indian Territory in 1900. He had been a member of the Baptist church since a youth. When Mr. Pate came to Weleetka community, he farmed for a number of years, moving to town in 1916. He served as custodian of the Weleetka school property for a number of years until his health failed. Survivors are the wife, Mrs. Virginia Pate; one son, Marvin Pate of Edmond; two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Lassiter of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Jennie Barnes of Desha, Ark. and one brother, Bill Pate of Okmulgee. Nita's Notes: I have repeatedly mistakenly stated that J. R. Pate lived and died in Edmond, OK. This obituary states his son Marvin Pate was the one who lived in Edmond, OK. Each of this family's obituaries states Mollie Pate's name as Mrs. J. W. Lassiter. Wonder if she was still married to Mr. Lassiter whereas Jennie Pate is listed as Jennie Barnes, perhaps Jennie's husband had died or she was divorced. Jennie Pate Barnes apparently did not migrate to OK with the others. John Robert Pate, his wife, Virginia (Virgie/Vergie), Marvin and Melvin Pate are buried together in a dedicated plot in the Hillcrest Cemetery. Bird, Susan Hankins Pate, son, Wm. D. (Bill/Willie) and an unnamed baby, buried at Susan Pate's feet, who apparently was born and died in 1931, are buried together in another plot in a separate area of Hillcrest Cemetery.

    1. [PATE] OBIT ~ Earl Howard "Booty" Pate, III - NC
    2. ThorPateLine
    3. Photo Available here: http://www.watson-kingfuneralhome.com/obituaries/Earl-Howard-Pate,III4761419591/ Earl Howard "Booty" Pate, III October 12, 1948 - August 9, 2010 Earl Howard "Booty" Pate, III Memorial services for Earl "Booty" Pate will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dwight Williams and the Rev. Richard Stone officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 tonight at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Earl "Booty" Pate died Monday, August 9, 2010 at home. He was born October 12, 1948, the son of the late Earl and Lois Pate. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Masters Degree in Accounting. Earl Howard "Booty" Pate, III, founder and owner of the famous night attraction, Crackers, is remembered as a legend in the disco dancehalls. It all began in the year 1978 when Booty opened the doors to what would be the longest surviving dance attraction on the southeast coast. The business operated for 14 years until it closed in the year 1992. Each night Crackers closed with "The Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time" or most famously "Last Dance", by Donna Summer. Some of the bands and famous singing artist that played were: Mother's Finest, Hank Williams, Jr., Percy Sledge, Four Tops, Lee Greenwood, Nantucket, Wet Willie, Dr. Hook, Earl Thomas Conely, David Allen Coe, and many others. In fact, Nantucket will perform at the Cole Plaza for Thunder fest on October 7, 2010. The band said they would only play if Booty Pate sat on the front row. Booty was well known for his ability to organize great concerts and live attractions with contacts over all the country. For a short period "Crackers in the Pines" was opened in Southern Pines but closed shortly after determining it pulled Booty's customers from the original Crackers in Rockingham. Booty had many friends that patronized his business over the years; you can usually run into someone that has been there everywhere you travel. Once they find out you are from Rockingham, they immediately ask, "Did you ever go to a place called CRACKERS?" Teenagers and well as young adults enjoyed a night out at Crackers in a safe environment dancing the shag, disco, etc. to famous music. It was once said that the reason for the long running life of Crackers was due to its owners. Booty and Trudy respected their customers, carried the heavy burden of caring for each and everyone of your children while they were out on the town, made it their responsibility to see that each and everyone of them made it home safely, and taught them a few of life's valuable lessons along the way. The customers respected Booty and Trudy, a key ingredient to sure success for any business. Even when "Booty" was dealing with Wegener's disease, he maintained his kind hearted attitude and would always compliment or say a kind word to you. Even though he could not attend his HHS-Class of 1966 reunion, he highly commended those that organized it. Booty will be missed, but the memories from all those years of "Crackers" will be shared for a long time among his many friends..and now he is in heaven, ordering the DJ to play the song that will always be associated with "closing time" at CRACKERS, "Last Dance" by Donna Summer. It might be "closing time" for Booty's life here on Earth, but you can believe the party is just beginning in Heaven. Surviving are his wife, Trudy; one daughter, Shannon Pate of Rockingham; one son, Earl H. Pate IV and his wife, Toni of Fayetteville; a sister, Debra Pate of Hamlet; and one brother, Richard "Ricky" Pate of Rockingham. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 904 Fayetteville Rd., Rockingham, NC 28379 or to Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N. US 1 Hwy., Rockingham, NC 28379. Online condolences may be made at www.watson-kingfuneralhome.com. Watson-King Funeral Home of Hamlet is serving the family.

    1. Re: [PATE] Evaluating the Family Finder test
    2. Lindy Hard
    3. My comments-- Lindy Lee Hard (female Pate descendant) I think the Family Finder test is well named. It is finding the the families, but not the people within them. It is up to the participants to search through the surnames posted and family trees to find the actual connection. The biggest problem is when a participant does not post either a list of surnames or their gedcom. It could be that many don't have the family knowledge or the computer abilities to create the Gedcom or are skeptical of the test. I admit I was skeptical and didn't post my surnames or gedcom until after I got my initial results. I agree with AJ. Don't expect instant gratification. In searching within the potential matches provided by Family Finder, I have located two absolutely definite matches and one probable but possibly not completely provable. I have proven a 5th cousin match to a descendant of Bridger Jones & Rachel Barry on my paternal side. (This participant provided a family tree and descends through a female child of Bridger & Rachel Barry Jones. I descend through one of their sons.) I have proven a match to a descendant of some of my 6th great grandparents, William Batte & Agnes Burchett on my maternal side. (This participant provided a family tree and descends through a son of William Batte & Agnes Burchett. I descend through one of their daughters.) Another match and I have common Westbrook ancestors leading back to the same place. He is unable to prove (due to missing records) exactly which child of my ancestor's brother he descends from, but we believe Family Finder has provided a good match. We are probably in the 5th-6th cousin range. This match is on my paternal side. This participant also provided a family tree. I am not sorry I took the test and hope the future will bring more positive results. Lindy ----- Original Message ----- From: "AJ" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2010 11:16 AM Subject: [PATE] Evaluating the Family Finder test > As mentioned several times, Family Tree DNA is offering a new test for genetic genealogy, the Family Finder test. Several people have contacted me about receiving an email yesterday from FTDNA soliciting orders for this test. FTDNA is the company which tests the members of our Pate DNA Project. > > We have now had eight members of our Pate DNA Project, five men and three women, order the Family Finder test (FF test), and only one has not yet received his results. > > My first impression about the test was deep disappointment because there were no instant results, particularly on identifying some of the kinships between us in our Pate family lines. However, after reviewing our results a little deeper and more thoroughly, there may still be some potential in the test, but finding kinships may be more difficult than initially thought. > > After some experience and reflection, here are my thoughts on the usefulness of the Family Finder test, primarily as it relates to our Pate family lines: > a.. First, have low expectations for instant gratification. All matches must come from the database compiled by FTDNA on results from all FF tests taken by their company's customers. Over time, this database will obviously expand as more people take the FF test. FTDNA is now only in the early stages of growth for this new test. > b.. Since our Pate DNA Project has captured a high percentage of Pate males with a strong interest in their genealogy, there are likely not a lot of other Pate-surname males taking the FF test who are not also members of our Project. > c.. Your best potential for making connections will likely be with non-Pate males with a Pate bloodline and females with a Pate bloodline. > d.. Once you receive a list of matches, you have to be aware that the results may come from any of your 64 grandparents at the 5th cousin level, so you will have to dig for possible Pate connections. > e.. Then, there are some problems in dealing with your matches. Some do not post their ancestral surnames or their gedcoms. Some will not respond to your emails. Of those who do respond, many may have only a superficial knowledge of their genealogy. > f.. Even after establishing a Pate kinship, you may still be unable to determine precisely who your common ancestor was, if both set of records are lacking in sufficient detail and/or are undocumented. > Of course, the promise and hope of this test is that you will locate matches with whom you can establish a Pate kinship (or with other surnames), and, through your combined genealogical documentation, you will be able to extend/expand your own family line, hopefully beyond your brickwall. > > I don't believe any of us have been that successful. As far as Pate connections are concerned, Audrey Young and I may be the most successful so far. We had long suspected a fairly close kinship based on traditional genealogy, which we were able to confirm with the FF test as possible 4th cousins. The test will not specifically identify your common ancestor, so we still have that hurdle to cross. 1. [PATE] Evaluating the Family Finder test
    2. AJ
    3. As mentioned several times, Family Tree DNA is offering a new test for genetic genealogy, the Family Finder test. After some experience and reflection, here are my thoughts on the usefulness of the Family Finder test, primarily as it relates to our Pate family lines: a.. But at least we can be more confident and focused in future research. Audrey has informed me that she has been able to confirm kinship with several other cousins disclosed by the test in some of her other ancestral surnames. Brenda Green has also confirmed some kinships in other surnames. I have not been informed of any successes any others have had. I had sent this message last week to the members who have taken the test. I had intended to take a survey to get their impressions of the results before posting this publicly. But since FTDNA sent out their solicitation yesterday, I think I should move quickly to inform any who may be considering the test. Several have expressed agreement with my conclusions. I want to be certain that people are making a fully informed decision. At this time, I am fairly neutral on the value of the test. There is likely to be potential not yet evident. So, I am not recommending to take the test or not. It has to be an indivdual choice based on your own situation. I just want everyone to have realistic expectations. I encourage any have taken the test to post their comments here for all to consider. If anyone has further questions or needs more information, please contact me. A. J.
