I have been fortunate enough to find three deeds that place Jinks' M12 Anthony Pate (abt. 1804) in Meredosia, Morgan Co., IL, from Feb. 1865-Oct. of 1875. The deeds clearly name Anthony's wife as EVALINE (also spelled EVELINE)-no maiden name given. One deed conveys a very small parcel of the town lot in Meredosia that Anthony and Eveline purchased from Daniel Waldo in Feb 1865 to Martin Cherwine/Cherwini (difficult to read last name) in Feb 1871 for the sum of $20. (Amanda Pate md. Martin Charwine in Morgan Co. in 1870.) The most interesting deed is the last, made on 14 Oct 1875, between "Anthony Pate and Eveline Pate his wife of the County of Morgan and State of Illinois parties of the first-part and Thomas Hodges of the County of Morgan and the State of Illinois of the second part". It looks like all of the town lot that Anthony/Eveline bought in Feb 1865 from Waldo was sold to Hodges, who also was deeded the 1871 section above by Martin CHERWINI. Witnesses to this are Wm. Kirk, J. H. Cummins, and EMMA HOWARD. (Emma Pate md. Alexander G. Howard in Morgan Co., IL in 1872). Directly below where Anthony and Eveline made their marks, a paragraph follows indicating that Eveline Pate appeared personally to the Justice of the Peace to waive her dower rights for this land on 8 Nov 1875. And directly below that paragraph, another headed "State of Texas/Grayson County" indicates that Anthony Pate appeared before Justice of the Peace, Wm D. KIRK (Is this the same one as above?) in the town of Denison, Grayson Co., TX, to acknowledge that he "executed the foregoing instrument" on 3 Nov 1875. I've done a quick search for Anthony in Grayson Co TX using census records and found nothing. I've also looked at PATE-L and found that Ellen's William B. Pate was in Grayson Co TX around 1874-another link between Jinks' M44 & M12 lines. Would love to hear your comments... Thanks, April
Hey April, Just a note to let you know my Pates were from Grayson County too. My most distant documented ancestor was Newel Walton Pate, his son Gilbert, his son John Wiley Pate was my g-grandfather. John, some of his brothers and a sister also resided in Grayson County. Meridith Sheridan, a Pate List Serve subscriber of long standing, has been attempting to share some research notes on Pate and allied families in Giles Co., TN The List Serve is kind of difficult to use with attachment, picturesor fowarded e-mail Subject: Fwd: Giles CO, TN From: <[email protected]> Date: Wed, 13 Oct 2010 15:21:45 +0000 To: [email protected] Fwd: Giles CO, TN Subject: Giles CO, TN From: <[email protected]> Date: Tue, 12 Oct 2010 11:28:36 -0400 To: [email protected] Dear Joel, I hope you are feeling well and rested since you dreadful summer and lovely Alaskan trip. Several things hace come to mind in that now I am in Italy for the while, Dick is back at work and I have time on my hands. Did you get Margaret Pate's Disc??? (I think I sent it just before I had the 2nd leg and knee redo. The knee works but is not perfect. They believe nerves were disturbed among other problems. However.) I am beginning to think that when I appear in the states again, I should have it recopied without the library logo. They had no right to do that and while I appreciated the copying, it is not correct. As to Giles CO, they seem to have some new records up (or new to me). All of the brothers (and I think they were brothers)sold the land to AJ Pate. Jinks worked with the theory that perhaps Jane Millican Pate who married her brother in law Mathew Pate had gone on to marry Mr. Nail. I do not believe this and think the story goes back to either her Jane's youth (was she a Nail before she became a Millican , then a Pate (Stephen and then Mathew Pate-the brothers.) Tami, Sorry the DNA did not match the line you hoped for. We have two other surname projects at that same brick wall. To confirm that something like informal adoption happened with James Pate, your best bet is to find another DNA participant from this line but from a sibling of the ancestor to test - if one existed and can be found. Testing someone who is a direct descendant of James will not help unless something out of the ordinary actually happened after James. In that case, a "confirmation" test of another ancestor might be worthwhile, especially if FTDNA has a good sale during the holidays. A full 67 marker test would not be needed. Even a 12 marker test would be helpful to establish the important #1 marker of 14 which set your donor apart from the other Pate surname groups.. In one of our other DNA surname projects, we were fortunate to have a long held theory of two late 1700 men being siblings proven true with the DNA. I personally happily ate humble pie on that connection. I never in this world thought we would ever connect to that line but did 100%. However, although they carry the surname we were researching but tested out of that surname's gene pool, we have not been able to push that one generation back to find the correct surname. On one of my surname projects, Taylor, we had a gentleman, Torres, who had been told he was from our surname from Civil War times. He was one marker off at 67 but we had no paperwork to clarify his situation. After 3 years of research, and waiting, I received an excited e-mail from him last week. He has found what is very likely one his ancestor's other children's descendants. What makes research so funny, yet exciting is - he found his link through an life-long old friend while they visited in WalMart while their wives shopped. Very likely Torres and his friend's wife are related. You never know where or when you will find your next clue!!! Hang in with us and don't despair - perhaps one day???. Just a suggestion--Maybe you could find another descendant from this James Pate (abt.1818 KY) to participate in the Pate DNA Project, and then you'd have more DNA to compare? I know that in my Pate line, a grandson (son of a daughter) was raised by his grandparents without any formal adoption process; but, he was given their surname (his mother's maiden name), Pate. Even though he has the Pate surname, his DNA would match his father's, who was not a Pate. Theoretically, he would not fit into one of the major Pate family lines, either, if you went only by DNA results. I'm not sure which direction to go on the research now, but am probably wasting time doing much more online and trying to attach him to established Pate Family trees. Seems like the DNA would rule out any relationship with the IL/Edward group. Hi, Tami, and thanks for the reply. Best wishes in your continued research, April -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Tami Broadway Sent: Monday, September 20, 2010 9:09 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PATE] James Pate abt. 1818 KY Yes, that is my line. And I am shocked with the results. I expected James to be at least a cousin on one of the tested lines. I'm not sure which direction to go on the research now, but am probably wasting time doing much more online and trying to attach him to established Pate Family trees. Seems like the DNA would rule out any relationship with the IL/Edward group.
