I Had message from someone who sent me a message looking foe a Bateman. I found a record of a Bateman, and I am sorry to say that he was killed the line of duty in France in 1918. 1st Lt William Bateman, Company L. 109th Infantry Killed in action 1918 I don't know if this is your Bateman.
