I think the idea would be that everyone who was a member of the group indexing a particular book would already own, or otherwise have access to (library loan, etc), that particular book. Another possibility is someone who already owned the book could xerox pages out of the book to send to another person who wanted to be part of indexing the book but did not have access to the book. That incurs expenses, however. But not everyone has Excel. I think a better idea is for the final product to be a plain text file. Each individual indexer could use whatever software they wanted to do their portion of the index as long as they could produce a plain text file to send to whoever was putting all the portions of the index together. Plain text is the lowest common denominator.
