G, 187th PVI. Company G was formed primarily from Susquehanna County and Luzerne County in early 1864. He mustered out with the Regiment on August 3, 1865. You can get some additional information at the following web site: http://bip.concept.se/user/187pvi/ The 187th was part of Joshua Chamberlain's "Keystone Brigade" and saw action in two principal "campaigns": The assault on Rive's Salient, before Petersburg, June 18, 1864 (also referred to as: "The Battle of Reservoir Hill"). Chamberlain was nearly mortally wounded in that assault, and was promoted to Brigadier General effective that day. The Weldon Railroad, July - August, 1864 They were in reserve for the "Battle of the Crater", July, 1864. The 187th was rotated out to Philadelphia in September, 1864. If you have any information about Henry Tewksbury that you would want associated with him on this web site (perhaps a photo of the Springfield and bayonet?), I would be happy to post it, with attribution to you. I'm talking about taking a book which is a valuable genealogical reference and is not fully indexed (some books have no index, some books have partial indexes), and getting a group of people together to create a full index for the book. I think the idea would be that everyone who was a member of the group indexing a particular book would already own, or otherwise have access to (library loan, etc), that particular book. Another possibility is someone who already owned the book could xerox pages out of the book to send to another person who wanted to be part of indexing the book but did not have access to the book. That incurs expenses, however. A third possibility is someone could scan pages out of the book and send them via email to another. > Seems like an Excel spreadsheet would work best for putting it all > together and indexing. But not everyone has Excel. I think a better idea is for the final product to be a plain text file. Each individual indexer could use whatever software they wanted to do their portion of the index as long as they could produce a plain text file to send to whoever was putting all the portions of the index together. Plain text is the lowest common denominator. Afterwards everyone's work would be combined into one file. I think this could prove to be a very useful thing, needless to say. The finished index could be placed on-line somewhere for people to access. I wouldn't want to have any pressure on anyone to finish by any particular time so there would be no deadline. I think a prerequisite for joining an indexing group would be that you would own, or otherwise have access to, the book.
