    2. I have recently purchased this book (at $50+) from the Flagship Niagra League in Erie PA. It has 908 pages with an index of names and full coverage of the Sullivan Expedition on 1779 as well the earlier history of the American Revolution. To my great joy, I found numerous references to my ancestor, SIMON SPALDING. I'd be willing to do lookups if you can be patient. Jean Spalding Barbour

    2. Some of the BARTON family of Apalachin, Vestal area were also in Little Meadows, and buried in that cemetery, as well as Marshland Road Cem., off Rt. 17C between Owego & Vestal and some in the small cemetery near Tioga Gardens on Rt 17C. The BARTONS ran a ferry across the Susquehanna River near where the golf course is now. They aren't my family, but connected to a friend. Chris

    3. I would be interested in hearing what you learn about the McKune cemetery; my husband's lineage includes Rebecca A. McKUNE (b 1819 m. Edw. J. TYLER, d by 1890 in WI), daughter of Joshua MCKUNE (b 1789 NY?) and Esther LEWIS (b 2 Jun 1793 Susq Co PA); his parents were Joseph McKUNE Sr (1762-25 May 1850) and Anna (d Nov 1825); her parents were Nathaniel LEWIS (19 Nov 1767 to 26 Oct 1860) and Sarah Hart COLE (b 1775, d 8 Nov 1852). My information is that Joshua and Esther may have gone to IL, so may not be buried in PA, but Joseph Sr and Anna should be there. Joshua and Anna's children, who may be buried there, were: Robert (1786-4 Mar 1861); Joshua; Hezekiah (d IL); John (d IA), Joseph Jr (m. Betsey CURTIS), William (d 2 Jul 1898 Wyoming Co PA) and Julia Ann (infant?). There was, perhaps, a son Fowler McKune. I believe that some members of the LEWIS family may be buried in that cemetery as well. Sarah Hart COLE died in IL, but her parents were Zebulon COLE and Sarah HART and she was born in PA. 3. Thanks for the reminder about human activities not being confined to political boundaries, Mary Jean. Apropos: In researching ancestors in Little Meadows / Apolacon in the northwest corner of Susquehanna Co., I recently came across a reference to the fact that early on, these people would have considered Owego in Tioga Co., NY, their 'business center.' I had been assuming that they would actually have been using Binghamton, NY (in Broome Co.) as a 'source' city. I'm interested in finding newspaper references to births, marriages, deaths, etc. in the period 1865 - 1910. I will of course be checking in Tioga County now, but if anyone on list has any advice on this, I'd appreciate hearing it. 1. Irish in Susquehanna Co.
    2. ROBERT GREEN
    3. <begin copy from Bill Grimes> My Susquehanna Irish info only goes back to the 1830s. My Grimes ancestors came from Tipperary to Susquehanna in 1835-36. They came originally to work on the canals that were being dug in the area and across the river in NY. Many Irish were recruited in Ireland to come and do the dirty work. There was a doctor who owned a large tract of land in Susq., like 10000 acres and was looking for people to settle there. His agent was an Irishman who approached the Irish canal diggers and offered land and tools, seed, and provisions for those with families to settle. A number of famailies took up the offer including my Grimes ancestors. In 1840 some more Tipperary people arrived including my Doheny ancestors who settled next to the Grimes clan. The area was mostly forest so had to be cleared first. This was hard work but most persevered and in time prospered somewhat. The area of Susq. was the Middletown and Friendsville areas. . . . . The original Cunningham that I know of was a Michael Cunningham, probably from Tipperary. He was born about 1800. He had a daughter named Alice, born c1830 who married Dennis Doheny in 1848 in Middletown. They were among those that came to MN in 1853. <end copy from Bill Grimes> Thanks, Bill, for that interesting detail on the Irish in Susquehanna Co. who had originally come to work on the canal. And for that information on your Michael Cunningham. My Michael Cunningham (born about 1813 in Ireland) came to Susquehanna County some time in the 1840's. He also had a daughter named Alice, but she was born 17 Feb 1844 in Little Meadows, and married Andrew McVinnie 9 May 1866. They continued to live in Little Meadows until Andrew died in 1907. My Michael Cunningham died in 1869 in Susquehanna Co. I've found census information on another Michael Cunningham living in Friendsville in that same time period, but this one was born about 1791 in Ireland. This other Michael is probably the one with a tombstone in the St. Francis Xavior Cemetery in Friendsville. That stone says he died 6 September 1876, age 86, a native of County Roscommon, Ireland. Both of these Michael's were married to women named Bridget, both of whom were born in Ireland. Makes me wish the Irish had been a little more creative in naming their children! Thanks again for the information. Bob Green rcgreen@myfamily.org
