    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wdB.2ACI/847.1 Message Board Post: Joe, There are no official records from that period. Pennsylvania counties didn't start keeping marriage records until the 1890s, with the exception of a brief period in the early 1850s. Records were kept by the individual churches or, in many cases, by the traveling pastors who served several communities. There are some compilations of marriage records available, but these are by no means comprehensive. Charles A. Fisher's Central Pennsylvania Marriages is based on early church records. George Wagenseller, a long-time newspaper publisher in the Snyder County area, published a compilation of marriage announcements that had appeared in the press called Snyder County Marriages 1835-1899 [your Werline marriage is not included]. More recently, some publishers have been putting together collections of marriage records, but these are still not complete. The LDS church has microfilmed the diaries of many of the pastors from that period, and you can view the films at local Family History! Centers around the country. But by and large they are not indexed, so you have to spend many hours squinting at the images to find specific information. Paid genealogy Web sites like ancestry.com and genealogy.com do have compilations of records, both on line and for sale on CD-ROM. These may be your best bet. But unless you can be specific about the church you're looking for, even these are hit and miss. Sorry, Richard Aurand Sherer
