Hi, Can one of you history buffs tell me what was going on in or around Union (now Snyder) County about 17 May 1820? I have found the mention of my extremely elusive ancestor, Peter WAREHEIM (alt. sp. WAREHIME/WAREHAM/WERHEIM et al). "Captain Peter WAREHAM applied to Gov. William Findlay requesting an immediate supply of rifles for his Volunteer Company of riflemen at Selinsgrove." I am curious as to the need for rifles at this particular time. Any information will be appreciated. Information on this ancestor is so scarce that I need to delve into any little bit I can find. I know Peter also served during the War of 1812 in Captain George Hendel's Company, Volunteer Riflemen, Fifth Detachment, Pennsylvania Militia, Commanded by Col. James Fenton. Peter Wareham married Mary HOLSTEIN, daughter of George HOLSTEIN and Maria Barbara WEISER. Thanks for your help. This may not be appropriate but it impacts my Ancestry list. So I will take liberty to post this question. I once heard my relatives refer to a "LEFTY OCKER" from Snyder County Area. He would be deceased now BUT has anyone ever had knowledge of a person referred by the above nick name? Larry
A new list has been created on Rootsweb for the discussion of the PLILEY/PLYLEY surname, and all it's variant spellings. I'm sending the link to all of you because at some point we've corresponded about these sometimes elusive ancestors. If you would like to subscribe to the list, then send an email to PLILEY-L-request@rootsweb.com In this messages, put the single word subscribe and nothing else. This list is maintained along with all the other genealogical mailing lists at Rootsweb and is publicized in their various websites, emails, etc., and will help us all both focus our research and access a larger pool of potential sources. Thought everyone would enjoy this bit of "horror"!! I posted this once before, it is worth reading again!! Michael Reck SHIFTING STONES Thanks to: Bernard Brooks benbrooks@new.rr.com An older friend, recently returned from her hometown in North Carolina, says they've spruced up the churchyard cemetery since her last visit several years back. "Lots of new greenery," she said. "And families are together now." "Together?" I asked, puzzled. "Well, years ago they never much worried where they buried someone because everyone was a neighbor anyhow. They'd just dig a grave wherever it seemed to balance things. But, they've redone it so people are with their children and grandchildren, instead of scattered." "You mean they exhumed all those people and buried them?" "Oh no," she said. David Hassinger lived in Union County, Middle creek Township in 1850. Age 34, he is married to Margaret age 22 - both born in Pennsylvania. Children in the household are: Amanda age 10, Allen age 8, Samuel age 5, Isabella age 1. Also in the household is Henry Aurand, age 14. No occupation is shown for Henry so perhaps he is related to Margaret. There are a number of Hassingers in Union County in 1850 that could be David Hassinger's father. You will need to do some research in probate and other records- hopefully that will help you determine David's parents. Shonna B. wrote: > Does anyone have any info on David Hassinger, b. abt. 1816, and living in Snyder County? I've been trying to find parents for George Hassinger, b. abt. 1871. All I've been able to find on this David Hassinger so far is that he had at least one previous wife - Rebecca - and several children with her. At the time of the 1880 census, he was 64 and a farmer. There were 3 children living with him at that time - Ammon (16), George (8) and Sallie A. (8 mths.). > > George Hassinger listed no parents on his marriage license application (m. Carl we have Tax Lists - Cumberland County -1768-1768-1770 by Merri Lou Scribner Schaumann On this list we have Michael Egulph (we assume Egolf) listed on Penns Rates - tax list for 1770. 300 L on Middle Creek. This seems to be present day Snyder County and if so this Middle Creek flows into Penns Creek and thence to the Susquehanna River. a.. I am told that Snyder Co. land records go back to 1855 when Snyder was formed from Union Co. b.. Union Co. records go back to 1813 when Union was formed from Northumberland. c.. Before Northumberland Co. was formed in 1772, this area drained by Middle Creek lay near the border between Cumberland Co. and Berks Co. I know you have a lot of information on the Egolf's - I think of this area? Do you have anything on this Michael? Do I have the correct Middle Creek? This seems to be way out of way in time and place to be the Michael Egolff born October 2, 1725, in Engstadt - I suppose it could be the Michael born November 23, 1756, but I wonder what he was doing there and what happened - why did he leave? He seems to have property valued at 300 pounds? But no cow no horse. That means no family. In what land office is this property recorded? I can't find it in Cumberland or Snyder? I would appreciate your comets Carl - thanks for past help - and best regards Hal
I learned of this new resource that is available. Since it is potentially helpfully to a broad range of researchers, I thought I would pass the information along. Sue ..... Hello everyone, I've transcribed more records from the Alms House Admission Foreigners & Nativity Records ( New York City, NY) These records apply to immigrants to Quebec, Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Boston. In the early 1800's port cities in the USA bore the burden of immigration. By the time they arrived, so many immigrants were tired, hungry and poor they ended up in the City Almshouse. The new records are from the years 1855 to 1858 and include the name of the ship each person sailed on (if they remembered it), the date they arrived, the ports of departure and arrival, their age, their place of origin and more. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ny_alms1855.htm I'm transcribing the records as best I can but the originals were only in fair shape, and some of the writing is almost illegible. They are in a very cramped hand, it seems the clerks had little room to make their entries in these ledger books, and some of the writing is so tiny that it is difficult if not impossible to read! Here is an example of the kinds of information found in the Almshouse records: In Mar 1856 John Coleman, age 15, single, from Ireland applied for relief. He told the clerk of the Almshouse that sailed from Liverpool on the Ship Ontario, arriving on 19 Dec. 1855 in New York. He didn't know the Captain's name, and had no one to vouch for him from New York City. It was his first time 'on the island" (meaning applying for relief). He was discharged in April 1856 Sometimes comments were added in the column for death or discharge dates. For example, poor Bridget Connor applied for relief on Apr 30, 1855. Bridget, 26, a spinster from Ireland told the clerk she sailed "about 20 months ago" from Tralee to Quebec. Bridget gave her ship name as Payoo or Payne, Captain O'Donohan commanding. This was her third time on the island, and the clerk recorded "Stupid" beside her discharge date of 16 Jan. '57 (If you find an ancestor with such a notation, or "insane" as I have also seen, don't be alarmed - sometimes not knowing how to add was enough to be labelled as "stupid"!) One poor man was noted as having run off and eloped to Quebec! There are many entries for individuals sailing to Quebec and Montreal, mainly from Ireland, so if you are looking for an elusive ancestor arriving in Canada in the time period 1850- 1858 you will want to check these records. The ports of arrival so far are New York, New Orleans, Quebec, Montreal, Philadelphia and Boston. Places of origin are Ireland, England, Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland, with the majority being Irish For New York arrivals, this is a wonderful addition to help with those UNindexed years. The index to the records can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ny_alms1855.htm This set of records adds to the existing records I have already transcribed and put online for the NYC Almshouse for 1819-1822 (with 1823 to 1840 to follow) starting at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/ny_alms1819.shtml I hope you enjoy this set of records; it's great fun reading and transcribing these wonderful entries! **Please feel free to forward this message to anyone you think might be interested** Lorine Lorine McGinnis Schulze

Tax Lists - Cumberland County -1768-1768-1770 by Merri Lou Scribner Schaumann We have Michael Egulph (we assume Egolf) listed on Penns Rates - tax list for 1770. 300 L on Middle Creek. I believe this flows into Penns Creek and onto the Susquehanna River? 1770 is early enough that if he had stayed or his descendants stayed until the late 1800's he would have made the history books but he went to Carlisle instead of staying in beautiful Snyder County. It seems that he owns 300 - help me with the L. I am searching for the land records. They don't seem to be in Cumberland County records - do the Snyder County land records go back that far? Michael is well known in Philadelphia until 1765 when his father died. I speculate that he came west looking for cheap land - although he was a baker and came from a line of coopers - he still must provide food for his family. He would have left most of his family in Philadelphia or at least east of the Susquehanna River until he had a cabin and crops - and there I stop again. I can't quite see him leaving his home in the city where he bought food from the nearby farmers -- unless somone wanted him to bake or make barrels. It seems to be an alphabetized list so it is not easy to know his neighbors. Captain James Potter, Patrick Miller and Michael Rogerin were among possible neighbors on Middle Creek. any comments appreciated Hal
I was wondering if someone could tell me about the town Paxtonville, since that's where my gg-grandparents were married back in 1878. Is there any churches still there, that may have been there back in 1878? I understand that it's a very small town, probably not much to it! But would still like to find out any info. I can on it. I would also like to ask someone for a census look-up for GILBERT, 1880, in the Paxtonville area? Thanks so much, and have a wonderful day! Tammy <snyflr695@aol.com>
