    1. Frederick Zieber
    2. Cynthia Zieber
    3. There were (perhaps) two Frederick ZIEBERs. My Frederick ZIEBER appears out of nowhere in Elkhart Indiana in time to be married in 1856. Census records say he was born in Pennsylvania as were both of his parents and family records say his birthday was 14 December 1824. The other Frederick ZIEBER (perhaps the same person) is the son of Daniel and Elizabeth ZIEBER of Snyder County, Pennsylvania. He is found on the 1850 US census but not on any later census. I also do not find a marriage or cemetery record for him in Snyder County although several of his family members are buried in the Globe Mills Cemetery in Middlecreek Twp. I would like any information that might help me prove that these two are or are not the same person. The most helpful record would be a church record that would give me a birth date for the Pennsylvania Frederick but I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you for any help. Regards and Happy New Year! Cynthia Zieber [email protected]

    3. Hello! My name is Kristie Kuzniar, and I am an amateur, but I really enjoy genealogy. I have been doing this since May of this year, when I was VERY pregnant and bored out of my mind. I have always been interested in my heritage, but it wasn't until I stumbled upon the Greene Co. (PA) Genealogical Society's homepage that I found how fun it was to do over the Internet. I was born in Waynesburg, Greene Co., but my family seems to have moved in from every other county in PA. I have been fairly successful with a few branches of my family--Yoders, Zufall, Vance--but I am still struggling with a few. My involvement with Snyder County comes from my search for the Brouses. My mother's biological father was Robert Jackson Brouse, Jr., but we never had much contact with him through the years, so what I do know is mostly from obituaries and funeral cards. My grandparents divorced in 1962, so my grandfather never got to share family secrets with me. I asked for his help, and I think he was compiling information for me, but he died of a sudden heart attack in November. I will share what little I have, in case anyone knows anything about this branch of my family. The farthest I can go back is to abt. 1860. Casper Sowers m. Lucy Cardell; Their dau. Bertha Sowers (1882- 1978) m. Paul Hoffman (d.1933)---Bertha remarried Roy Plummer; Margaret Elizabeth Hoffman (1911-1991) m. Robert Jackson Brouse, Sr.--they resided in Selingsgrove, Snyder Co.; Robert J. Brouse, Jr. m. 1956 Dolores Jean Yoders at Patuxent River Naval Base, Patuxent River, St. Mary's Co., MD-- they had one dau., Lori Ann Brouse (my mother),and divorced in 1962; Bob remarried in 1963 to Gloria ? and had one daughter, Karen--Gloria still lives in Sunbury, Northumberland Co., where she lived with Bob. Bob has a brother Paul in Middleburg, Snyder Co., and a sister Brenda in York, PA, but I have not been able to get any information from them. If anyone recognizes anything, please write me! And happy hunting to all of you! One little tidbit that I just recalled--Robert Brouse, Sr., my great- grandfather, was a pharmacist for Kerr Drug for many years... 1. My Introduction -
    2. Jim and Linda Stienstra
    3. Am I the last? I've read all the others! Anyway, I live in Central California -at the southern tip of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range - between Bakersfield and Edwards AFB where the space shuttle lands when there's bad weather in Florida!! My husband and I are both retired (one of those downsizing, early retirement things!) and are enjoying our grandchildren and traveling. I have made 3 trips to Pennsylvania doing "my genealogy thing"! I have tickets for another in the Spring! You see, genealogy is not my hobby, it is my passion! I belong to Historical Societies up and down the middle section of Pennsylvania, with Snyder County being the first one I joined!! (I also have a lot of Pennsylvania Dutch in my background!) My ties in Snyder County start with Joseph Britton and his wife Hannah Frane. They came to Chapman Twp, Union County before 1800 and are both buried in Grubbs Churchyard. I descend thru their daughter Mary and her husband William Carwell. They, too, are buried in Grubbs. Their son Joseph Britton Carvell married first, Rebecca Mark, second Mary Hyle. It is thru the first marriage that my g-g-grandfather was born. Jeremiah Mark Carvell was born in McKees 1/2 Falls in 1843. Rebecca died in 1848. Descendents of Joseph B. and Mary still reside on his property near Richfield. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet some of them this fall!! Joseph B and Mary are both buried in East Salem. These are my links - I'll get into my brickwall later!!! I wish for each of you, the happiest of new years!! And may each one of you climb over your brick wall in 1998!!! 1. Introduction
    2. Jeff Riegel
    3. My name is Jeff Riegel and I live in Dallas, GA. just west of Atlanta. I just recently got involved in genealogy, about three weeks ago. I was born in Elmire N.Y. but move to Selinsgrove PA. when I was 1. I lived there until I was about 10. I have very deep roots in Snyder County and some of the surrounding County's on both sides of my parents. The main surnames I am researching from Snyder County are RIEGEL, ROWE, TREVITZ, YERGER, RENNER, JENKINS there are many offshoots TROUTMAN, ARBOGAST, AUCKER, FAUST, BICKHART, FOLTZ, GODFREY, GUYER, HALLENBACH, HEMPLE, HUMMEL, MULL, STROUP, WILLHOUR and WOODLING most of which are in or around the state of PA. and many have roots back to Snyder County. My Father Jack L. Riegel grew up in Selinsgrove and Hummels Warfe area. My mother Nancy ROWE Riegel grew up in Selinsgrove. Her mother was a TREVITZ and my father's mother was a RENNER. I work in Computer Software and am currently beta testing Windows 98, I am using Family Tree Maker Deluxe 4.0b to track my genealogy. I have the Social Security Death Index for the United States from 1937-1996 on CD. I just recently sent away for a book on the RIEGEL'S and subscribed to a RIEGEL'S newsletter. The book an news letter are available from James Earl Reigle who lives in Lewistown, PA and can be reached @ 717.242.0786. I also just recently sent away for the Eastern PA. Census Index for 1870, Church Records: Selected Areas of Pennsylvania, 1600s-1800s and the Pennsylvania Vital Records, 1700s-1800s all on CD. I will be happy to do lookups. As a side note, I met my second cousin first removed just recently through this list. Currently I am stumped on finding Information from Samuel H. Trevitz who was a resident of Middleburg but I'm not sure if that's Snyder or Union county. If so let me know and I will supply more Information. Thanks Jeff Riegel. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Tuesday, December 30, 1997 9:44 PM Subject: PASNYDER-D Digest V97 #2

    2. Kathy
    3. Hello Everybody... I hadn't realized this list was so new when I posted a few days ago, so I'll introduce myself now. Oh, and from my first posting, I'm thrilled to say that I found a second cousin I hadn't known existed! I was born in Snyder County and lived there for the first 21 years of my life. I'm now in Northumberland Co., and still close to "home." All four of my lines are centered right here in central PA and since they were very large families, I'm finding that they cross with many of the families that are being researched in this area. I'll be reading all the list mail carefully and checking for any possible names crossing with the family books I have. I'd also like to take this opportunity to say a big and heartfelt "thank you" to our moderator and list owner for making this possible. I'm not sure what's been discussed since I just got here, but if it hasn't come up yet, I think it would be a great idea to keep these introductions we're doing on file somewhere and then offered to any newcomers who might wish to read them. That way they'd have our research list names and we wouldn't have to keep saying the same intros over. I've very glad to be part of this group, and my own list is: (Main list) KRATZER, WILL, RIEGEL, HACKENBERG (Secondary list) KUHNS, WAGNER, BINGAMAN, HOFFMAN, KLINE, MITCHELL, WALTER, MOYER, WERTZ, GOSS, DECKER (Names further back in time) HAAL, PLATTNER/BLATTNER, GERTRUITHA, HOENEN, WERNER, REBENTISCH, SIPHERS ------> Please respond to [email protected] Thanks! <------

    2. George Diehl
    3. Greetings from the Great Northwest, I have just recently caught the bug to do research in my families past and this has taken me to a point in Richfield, Synder Co. I have relied on my father who lives in Northumberland to supply me with info and does research in the area. I was born in "Norry" and have a great many relatives in the area. My research is with the surnames DIEHL, STROUP, HOFFMAN, GRESH, RICH, ARTER, REICHLEY, STEFFEN, MITTERLING. Using the Internet has taken me all over the country but I do wish to know all the details I can gather from an area that seems to point to an origin of the DIEHL family. I have a number of lists from the Synder Co courthouse that confirm death dates for members of the family but would like to know where they lived, what was the history of the time in which they lived, and recreate for the family and for the future the lives they lived. I use FTM, and have a few other software programs that I play with. Also use the LDS in the Seattle area to help in my searches. Any info would be appreciated and I have used the resources of the Internet to have "lookups" done for me. If I can supply any information to anyone I would be happy to do so. George Diehl

    2. Richard O. Sommer
    3. My name is Richard Sommer. I have lived in Stillwater, Minnesota for the last 11 years. Prior to that, with the exception of 14 months in Southeast Asia in 1969 and 1970, I lived in Ohio. I resided in the Columbus area (Grove City) for 24 years and spent 12 years in various parts of Northern Ohio, Akron, Toledo, Rocky River and Cuyahoga Falls. My gggrandfather Peleg M. RUMFIELD was born in PA in 1818. I don't know what county but a newspaper article many years after his death referred to him as Pennsylvania Dutch. I have found several Rumfield/Rumfeld/Rumfelt families in Lehigh and Northampton Counties. There is, in the records of Botschaft Lutheran and Reformed Church, Chapman Twp., Snyder Co. baptism records for two Rumfelds: Louisa 1823 and Edward 1825. These were the children of Andreas Rumfeld b. May 8, 1786, Lehigh PA, and his wife Anna ?. I have not yet connected Peleg to any of the Rumfelds that I have found, the name is uncommon enough that I believe they are all members of the same family. The first of whom came over in 1734 on the ship St.. Andrew from Germany through Rotterdam. Peleg married Rachel Pettit in Morgan County Ohio in 1839. They lived in various southern Ohio counties before settling in Meigs Co. Peleg returned home ill from the war in 1862. He died upon reaching his front yard, never making it inside his house. I am looking for any information on the Rumfeld/Rumfelt/Rumfield family but I am especially anxious to connect Peleg with his parents. Dick Sommer P.O. Box 31 Stillwater, MN 55082 [email protected]

    2. Stephen D. Snyder
    3. I have a definite trace of my family tree back to George E. Snyder, b 1794 in Northumberland Co., PA George and his wife, Elizabeth Duck (born Union Co), left Northumberland Co and moved to Venango Co., PA about 1830. My ancestors have lived in Venango Co. ever since. We do not have George's parentage figured out and would like to do so. Family tradition has it that we are descended from John Snyder, brother of Simon Snyder, Governor of PA, for whom Snyder County is named. John (known as Black John) actually purchased the Isle of Queue property from which present day Selinsgrove grew. Black John died in a horse race. His estate was administered by Simon and another man. The Isle of Queue ended up being purchased at auction by Anthony Selin, John and Simon's brother-in-law. Black John's heirs sued the Governor for the handling of the estate and this drug on in the courts for years, with judgment going alternately to the heirs and finally to the Governor. This seems to have been settled around 1830 and may have been the 'straw' that caused George to move west to Venango Co. Dates of birth for John and George do not seem to indicate parentage. Information we have indicates that John died before George was born. Our best guess is that George would be John's grandson. Though the dates are tight, it is possible. Any definitive information would be appreciated. Of course, we welcome any and all relatives of George & Elizabeth to make themselves known, as well. Another 'John story' indicates that as a young man during the Revolution, John was in a tavern when a Redcoat made derogatory remarks about the rebels. John beat the Redcoat and was run out of town (Lancaster, PA) at the point of a bayonet. 1. Introductions
    2. Logan Garth Swanger
    3. Okay, gang. We have a little over a dozen people subscribed to this list, so it's time to get things rolling. I'll begin by introducing myself and letting you know more about the purpose of this list. I was born near Lewisburg, Union County, and lived all of my childhood and adolescence in the borough of New Berlin, a small town situated on the north bank of Penns Creek in Union County. Just across the creek is Jackson Township, Snyder County. My roots go deep in both counties. I got started in genealogy when I was fifteen years old. At that time I wanted to do something no one else had done, so at that tender age, I copied all of the known legible tombstone inscriptions in the New Berlin Cemetery, over 2,000 of them, and had them published in the local historical journal. I was the youngest secretary of the New Berlin Heritage Association which has its annual Heritage Day celebration the fourth Saturday in August. Working on my genealogy, I discovered many records and made connections with many knowledgable people in the field of genealogy and history in Union and Snyder Counties. I am a member of the National Genealogical Society, the Union County Historical Society, the Snyder County Historical Society, the Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Pioneers, the South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society, and the Association for Gravestone Studies. I am a United Methodist pastor currently living in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Many of you will know this small city as the birthplace of Little League baseball and where the LL World Series is held every year. One reason why I became the coordinator for the Snyder County PAGenWeb project and the moderator of this mailing list is to network with you any thoughts or information on the genealogy and history of the county, or if I don't have the answer, I can refer you to someone who does have the answer. So if you ask me question about Snyder (or even Union) County and I give you an answer, I usually know what I'm talking about. If I am in error, I expect you to correct me gently and with source material to back it up. Of course, as moderator of this list, I expect all subscribers to stick to the subject of genealogy and history in Snyder County. I contacted the coordinator of the Union County PAGenWeb site and she does not intend to moderate a list for that county. So because Snyder County was created from Union County and some records cross county lines, I will also entertain questions dealing with Union County before 1855, when Snyder County was created. I also expect proper etiquette from subscribers. As a moderator, it is my reponsibility to see that certain rules of conduct are observed, and I will enforce them rigorously to insure that all of us will enjoy the list. So I hope you will have fun with this list. Also, remember that if you want to send private e-mail, use the individual person's e-mail address that usually shows up in the e-mail heading. Otherwise, public e-mail can be addressed directly to this mailing list. Now it's your turn. Who are you out there? Tell us a little about yourself and let's start building relationships that will help us with your genealogical projects in Snyder County and pre-1855 Union County. 3. Hi Everyone... I just found this list and I'm thrilled. I have a few things to offer and then I'll give my research list. Most of my research centers around Snyder County. First of all, I have part of the 1850 census for Union County... and since Snyder was formed from parts of it, it's been a great help to me. It's not just the index, but the actual names. I'll be glad to see if I have the townships anyone needs. I also have the cemetery record for Zion Church, RD#1 Middleburg and can answer questions about that. Third, I have extensive books written on the Hackenberg and Riegel families. 3. I am looking for the parents of PELEG M. RUMFIELD who was born March 25, 1818 in Pennsylvania. I do not know which county he was born in but he was called the "Pennsylvania Dutchman" when he later went to Ohio. An article written about Peleg, many years after his death, in a Southern Ohio newspaper, indicated that both he and his wife RACHEL PETTIT were "Pennsylvania Dutch". There were Rumfields in Lehigh and Northampton counties, but I have not been able to connect Peleg to any of them. Rachel Petit was born October 17, 1819. I have very little information on her family and would like to find out who her parents are and where they were from. I am reposting this because I have subscribed to several new lists. I would appreciate any help I could get on these folks. Thanks, Dick Sommer <[email protected]> Stillwater, MN

    1. Introduction and Hi
    2. Barb McCusker
    3. Hello Everyone - I am delighted to see this list appear, and will take this opportunity to introduce myself. I was raised in Sunbury and now live in New Jersey. Along the way my husband and I lived in Lewisburg. I still have a sister in Watsontown, and a brother in Selinsgrove. I've been interested in my family history for 40 years and collected all sorts of information form anyone who would provide it, accumulating some great family treasures along the way. (You know - no one else is interested, take them.) When we got our computer four years ago I could finally put those boxes of data into a program, and have been going strong ever since. I had one line which no one had ever researched, and I made it my personal project. It was the THOMAS line in Snyder Co., and it was mailed (not completed, since no lines are ever completed) a year ago. I am always alert for more information and researchers on my lines, and have been helped in finding them by the internet, as have we all. Met some great cousins through postings. SNYDER CO. lines are: THOMAS, HECKMAN, MUSSER, STETLER, WEADER and FREED. Trying to trace further back THOMAS, WEADER and FREED. OTHER LINES are: BROWN, EVANS, FROWNFELTER, KEIBACH/KEBACH,KELL, KNERR, SCHROYER, SNYDER, SONTAG, WERNER and WETZEL from Berks and Dauphin Co.'s. I am always willing to share information, and hope that this list will help us all. Barbara McCusker
