To whoever you are ([email protected]), I have found info on several names by going to a Search Engine (Yahoo, Alta Vista are two good ones) punching in a last name and am amazed at all the info that comes up. You can also add after the name Mailing list or homepage to be more specific and sometimes it helps if you reverse this and add these two items "before" the surname. Have lots of info on descendants of John George Obermyer who lived in Northumberland Co. mid-1700's. Good luck, Teekeela Ann (Robertson) Williams Presently searching for info on: George Holmes Robertson, b. 9 May 1874 in Vevey, IN (Married Alice Susan Overmyer in Terre Haute. She is a descendant of John George Obermyer who was one of the first Grand Jurists in Northumberland Co. and my paternal grandmother. (Obermyer was later changed to Overmyer and other spellings). For more info on descendants of John George Obermyer of Northumberland Co. go to homepage of Ed Tokarz at http://www.csi-net.net/etokarz/index.html (more Overmyer links at this site) or subscribe to the OVERMEYER1 mailing list (that's the number one & not the letter "i" ). I've come across information from my great aunt. In the information it says they lived in a house located in "Hell's Kitchen" near Selinsgrove, circa 1900. Two questions: 1) what general area was this? 2) how did it get that name? I know from her writing it seems to be along Penn's Creek-- Somewhere. I would appreciate anyone helping me fill in the details thanks much, jbucher
I'm new to this list. I am researching ancestors with surname REICHENBACH

Well Hi everyone! My question is what records are available for marriages in Snyder County, PA. I am particularly interested in finding a marriage record for a Gideon Long/Lang and Elizabeth Dabler(SP?). The first child that I know of was born in 1836. They lived in the Shamokin Dam area. I would appreciate any advice in this area! Lisa Long Adrian, MI

Come one folks. Let's get some discussion going on Snyder County. ____________________ Logan Garth Swanger Williamsport PA ____________________
These folks had a house near my parents in Venango County. The Snyder County tie-in may be of interest to someone, so thought I would pass it along. T.S. Strohecker, farmer, was born May 12, 1829, at Lewisburg, PA, son of Jacob and Susanna (Snyder) Strohecker, the former a native of Berks County, born in 1800, a farmer and brick maker, and now deceased, the latter still resides at Lewisburg at the advanced age of ninety years. Our subject received his education at the Lewisburg Academy. In 1858 he recruited company 1., Fifty-seventh Pennsylvania Volunteers, of which he became captain, and was subsequently promoted to the lieutenant colonelcy. He retired from the service in consequence of a wound received at the battle of Fredericksburg, and has since devoted his attention to farming and oil producing. He is a well-known writer on agricultural subjects and ranks with the most progressive and successful farmers of the county. Colonel Strohecker was married in 1850 to Catharine Bachman, of middleburg, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, and they are the parents of four children: Winfield S., of Cranberry Township; Susan M., wife of G.W.Bower, of Rouseville; Mary E., wife of L.L. Ray, of Cooperstown, and Gertrude. He is a member of the G.A.R., and was the first commander of the post at Cooperstown. I am looking for information on my g-g-grandfather Peter Arnold. I can find him in census records and other sources in Royalton, Niagara, NY from 1850 on, living next to his uncle, also named Peter Arnold. The census records say that my Peter, called Peter 2nd, was born in Pennsylvania. His headstone says that he was born 25 Jun 1793. Information I have states that his uncle lived in Synder County, served in one of Captain Snyder's regiments in the War of 1812, married Margaret Fisher, and moved to NY. I am trying to find out where my g-g-grandfather was born and who his parents are.
I have subscribed to this listing and all seems well until I discover that I no longer get any transmissions. Does a person have to re-subscribe every so often? Hello everyone. I just got back from visiting Snyder County for a week. I found a lot of information in the courthouse, which is better organized than it usually is. All in all, it was a helpful experience. However, my consternation lies in not being able to find tombstones of several of my ancestors which were in existence as little as five years ago. A case in point: I am a descendant of a Jacob and Mary KRATZER and a Jacob B and Rachel KRATZER, all of whom are buried in the Kratzerville Union Cemetery next to the United Church of Christ. Five years ago, I had checked their tombstones and wrote down all of the information. This past week, I visited the cemetery again because I had found some new information on their children and was checking the cemetery for the children's dates. When I tried to check on the two Jacob KRATZERs, their stones and those of their wives were nowhere to be found. I noticed that the UCC church had built a new piece on to their building which now comes perilously close to the part of the cemetery that contains the graves of several Revolutionary War veterans, but the building did not come close to the area in the cemetery where I remember my Jacob KRATZERs being buried. The stones are simply gone. I did the same thing in my hometown cemetery of New Berlin, just north of the Snyder County border. In 1970, I copied all of the known, legible inscriptions in the cemetery (not a bad feat when you consider that I was only in high school at the time). Now that I have gone back to field check some of my original information, some of the stones are mssing. Where have all the stones gone? I suspect that as stones fall over, cemetery custodians just pick them up and cart them away to be used for fill or whatever. At one time, stones used to be at least propped up against a nearby fence or tree, so at least you had the inscription, even if you didn't have a marker anymore. I understand that cemetery custodians have a hard time mowing and trimming around the many stones in a cemetery. But can't someone take the time to repair stones that have fallen over or are broken? I'm sending a copy of this e-mail to the Snyder County Historical Society to alert them of this problem. Thanks goodness we have George W. Wagenseller's "Tombstone Inscriptions of Snyder County" which records inscriptions through 1899, or we would have lost many many more inscriptions over the years. Thanks for letting me sound off. I am looking for a Jacob Swenk that was born in approximately 1860. This is my wife's great grandfather. He died in Grants Pass, Oregon on Sept. 20, 1899. In between he lived in Colorado, and Butte City Montana and was a mining engineer (superintendant). He has stated in the 1880 Census in Colorado, and in the 1885 Census in Colorado that he was born in Pennsylvania. I would appreciate any info that is available on the Swenk, Schwenk, Schwenck lines. I have approximately 500 different Swenk, Schwenks that I have located, but still do not no which is the right line. Thanks for any help Jim Lindell (married to Shauna Swenk)

Just inquiring if any one in Snyder County has knowledge of this surname. A Mary Swarm was married to my ggg grandfather. I have not been able to locate any descendants by this name. They lived in the Snyder County area, I think, somewhere about 1810 to 1850. Any information would be appreciated.
