The houses in undeveloped areas, those that had homes pretty far apart were and still are delivered by motorized (or horse-drawn) vehicles because of the mileage the "mail person" would have to cover. Because the box was at the side of the road, and needed some ID to let the carrier know where the mail should go, they gave them Box #s this confuses people because you can rent a box in a post office as well. I am not sure if the Pottsville post office has anyone there that would equate that to a house, but it is worth a try.
