Beltz, Elsie L. 95y d.o.d. 9/21/1986 I found some information on the West Penn Zimmermans in the Schuylkill County book published by J.H. Beers in 1916. Alfred Zimmerman is profiled in the book: his parents were Thomas and Annie, his grandparents were Samuel and Susan, and his great-grandfather was Leonard Zimmerman. Two other children of Leonard are mentioned: David Zimmerman and Mrs. John Zehner. According to the book, Samuel was born in West Penn Twp. and owned four tracts of land totalling about 300 acres. In addition to Thomas, Samuel's children were Rebecca, Benjamin married Polly Martz, Polly married Samuel Miller, Priscilla married Abraham Halderman, Rudolph married Hannah Donert, Joseph married Polly Schaeffer, and Samuel married Lydia Mautz. (Of the male children, Thomas, Benjamin, and Joseph are definitely buried at Zion in Snyders). While it's still possible that your Zimmermans (and mine) are somehow descended from Leonard, I'm also beginning to wonder if they came up through Berks County. With regard to pioneer families, Zimmerman is a far more common name in Berks and Lancaster Counties than in Northampton. I'm seeing that there were Zimmermans established in Albany Township, Berks Co. by the mid 1700s. In my own family history, more than one group made the jump from Albany to West Penn. We might be tied in with the Pine Grove Zimmermans, too, although I looked at those records when I went to Pottsville and I couldn't find a fit for my Daniel. Intriguing observation that P.F. Leiby's wife could have been a Zimmerman...the Leibys are well established in that part of Schuylkill County, and were originally from Berks County. (They are distant cousins of mine.) There's a published Leiby genealogy that probably holds the answer. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
