Through Mrs. Mary M. Barret, of Pottsville, we are indebted for the following information as to toll-gate keepers. They were named as follows: Mr. Osman, of Northumberland, for a period of five months, who was succeeded by Mr. Gossler, of the same place, who was succeeded by Mr. Osman again. In 1856 Rufus Barret, of Northumberland, took charge of the toll-gate and was there for 6 years and was succeeded by John Locks and was followed by Robert Smith, who was the last toll-gate keeper. This gate like most other gates mentioned, was so located as to catch all the travel in this region.' NOTE: This publication was published December, 1914.
