Hi All. I had a great morning at the Schuylkill County courthouse yesterday. I found my Great Great Grandfather's (Edward MCENTEE, born c1818) naturalization papers (or should I say David searched them out for me). I found two wills left by sisters of my Great Grandfather (Maggie MCENTEE, Annie MCENTEE), leaving all their possessions and properties to their heirs. I so appreciate that I was able to find these records and they did verify relationships for which I didn't have any "official" sources. What I DID NOT find and what I still really, really WANT TO KNOW is: WHERE IN IRELAND DID THESE PEOPLE COME FROM?!?!? I have checked for ship passages, I have found the original naturalization papers, I have checked the cemetery (St. Canicus), there aren't any death records (c1890), the Church (St. Canicus) burial records are lost. Does anyone have any additional ideas for some obscure type of record that might give me this one bit of information I seek? I do have one last hope. Annie, one of the Great Grandfather's sisters, died in 1918, and I will send of to the State of PA to see if her death record will have any additional information. I think though that for place of birth, it is going to say just "Ireland." I guess I have a little bit more to search for as well. There are other possible descendants and I learned some names in these wills. Perhaps I will be able to find family branches that maintained more family lore than we did. Families that are related are FOLEY and CONNERTON in Schuylkill County and FITZPATRICK in Philadelphia. Once again, here is my family: Edward McEntee, born c1818 in ? Ireland, died bet1890-1893 Mahanoy City, . Schuylkill Co., PA Alice ? McEntee, born c1820 in ?, Ireland, died bet1890-1893 Mahanoy City, . I would suggest finding tombstones for these people. In St. Stephen's Church cemetery in Port Carbon (founded by Irish canal workers) there are numerous tombstones that include where in Ireland these people came from. Most of these Irish dead were not well-to-do but were able to purchase large stones with a lot of information on them. Another source might be church baptism records. My husband recently visited the church his grandfather was baptized in 1865 (though in Michigan) and the parish records written in Latin had where his great-grandparents were born. Good luck. Additional ideas for finding where in Ireland your people came from: (1) Don't overlook tombstones of Edward's siblings. Sometimes a tombstone inscription yields the name of the town or parish the family came from. If you think Edward and Alice were married in Ireland before emigrating, then look for tombstones of her siblings, too. They were more likely to hail from the same area in Ireland if they were married there than if they were married after emigrating. (2) If you can get a date and locality of death for Edward's sister Annie, then look for an obituary for her; it might name the town. Likewise for any other siblings.
