    3. The church on Dutch hill that was Lutheran Reformed split 4 ways. The two St. Johns, Zion and Trinity. The last one to go which is the St John's on the corner of Pine and E. Mauch Chunk took the bricks from the original church and built the present chruch at the turn of the 20th century. There is a church that is at the address that you gave the Episcopal Church on Broad but it is not listed in the phone book. 3. Calvary Episcopal Church (founded 1848) 300 W Broad St Tamaqua PA 18252 610/377-0845 (not a Tamaqua phone number) Rev Robert Gildersleeve, priest-in-charge (This is from an old list, so may not be current. Last I heard, Calvary's active congregation was down to just a very few people.) ############################################################## Trinity United Church of Christ Trinity was formed a result of a split from St John's Reformed (now St Johns UCC). Both of these churches started out as Reformed Churches, not Lutheran. Both Trinity and St Johns are still active churches. There may be some confusion because there are two St Johns Churches in Tamaqua, one UCC (Reformed) and one Lutheran. The two St Johns started out as a 'union' church in Tamaqua - individual or separate Reformed and Lutheran congregations sharing one church building. This original building (no longer standing) was on the site of the St Johns Cemetery on Dutch Hill in Tamaqua. Both congregations left Dutch Hill and built their own churches. A bit of denominational history on the United Church of Christ - the Reformed Church merged with an Evangelical Church in 1934 to become the Evangelical & Reformed Church. In 1957 the E&R Church merged with a Congregational Church to become the United Church of Christ. ------ Original Message ------ Received: Tue, 10 Apr 2007 11:19:12 PM EDT From: "Glee Krapf" <gleek@ptd.net> To: <paschuyl@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [PASCHUYL] Episcopal CHurch I live down the street from this church and it was never an Episcopal church. 3. In researching my Bensinger family I found this in the book German Immigrant Servant Contracts Registered in the Port of Philadelphia, 1817-1831 by Farley Grubb: "Aug. 9, 1819, Johannes Fuchs, with consent of Jacob Lichet, to Jacob Osterman of Philadelphia victuler for five years, to have six weeks schooling for each year of the term, and at the end thereof two complete suits of clothes of which to be new and be paid twenty seven dollars. Consideration = $81.25. Johannes Fuchs assigned to Daniel Benzinger from New McKeansburg Schuylkill county, tavernkeeper, to serve him or assigns the remainder of the above indenture. Consideration = $81.25." A lot of the contracts were for three years and most were males from Germany, but I only found a few entries from Schuylkill County, most are from the greater Phila. area including NJ and Del. entries. William born in 1821 is my 2nd great-granduncle he is the father of Emma Robson Born Jul 1876 Died 1949. William is also the father of William Pyle. I'm not sure who the mother of William Pyle is other than obviously her last name was Pyle. William was married to a woman named Elizabeth. Elizabeth had Emma Robson and another child who died and William Pyle is listed as her stepson. You have a Phillip E Robson who died at 7 months old. You have his year of death listed as April 1975. Is there any chance that he died in 1875? If so he could be her deceased child. I am still trying to identify the remaining names that you posted. I'm sure they tie into my tree somewhere. 1. Re: [PASCHUYL] Line Street in Shenandoah
    2. Paul, Sorry I didn't think to explain "Line Street" in Shenandoah. The street that bore that name in the 1900 US census was later called "West Line Street" in the 1920 census and in the 1930 census it is called "West Washington Avenue". House numbers remained the same throughout these changes, and my family occupied #425 and #427. These days it is called West Washington Street. I have confirmed these changes by looking at an 1875 map of Shenandoah held on microfilm in the Pottsville Free Public Library. The map is part of the County Atlas of Schuylkill Penna., published by F. W. Beer & Co., 36 Vesey St., New York in 1875. Line Street coincided with the borough's northern boundary line at the time, so it's east to see why it was called Line St. Bill In a message dated 4/9/2007 11:09:14 AM Eastern Daylight Time, pjstef@yahoo.com writes: << Subj: Re: [PASCHUYL] Surname list Michalski etc Date: 4/9/2007 11:09:14 AM Eastern Daylight Time From: pjstef@yahoo.com (Paul Stefanowicz) To: BillJosey@aol.com Hi Bill, Thanks for the message. I don't know about any connection. Michalski is actually prnounced "Ma-HOL-ski" so there would not be much reason to add the C sound. And as far as the years go, our Michalski family had kids born in Shenandoah in the 1890s. I only have one Michalski immigrant ancestor that I know of, Ignacy Michalski, who was born in 1859 and arrived in Phila in 1884. It is his line that I am following. I can have a look for Mickalowskis though for you. I am also trying to figure out what "Line St" is ...... There is no street by that name anymore. My guess is that, if you look on the census a few pages further it is denoted "West Line St" so my guess is that it is the current "West St"...after 1910 a number of streets in Shenandoah were changed as far as what they were called. As an aside - if you flip one or two sheets ahead of your family, you will see another family "McLosky" or very close to it - have you seen if they are related to you? Another thing - perhaps you are aware - the former GM of the Detroit Pistons was Jack McCloskey, he was from Schuylkill County - Mahanoy City I believe. Have you tried to make any connections to that line? Thanks again for the correspondence. KInd Regards, Paul --- BillJosey@aol.com wrote: > Paul, Michalski may have become McCloskey.
