Hi Nancy, I grew up with the understanding that the maiden name of my gt grand mother (Margaret Curry of Shenandoah) was CANTWELL. Lately I've found indications that sometimes CANTWELL and CANFIELD were used interchangeably in the 1800s. Margaret had a brother who died 1903 in Cleveland OH, and three sisters; Mrs Robert Dillon of Mt Carmel, Mrs David T Brown of Danville, Mrs Patrick Comeford of Phila. What are your connections with the CANTWELL name? Leo In a message dated 4/13/2007 6:12:27 A.M. Hi Claudia, According to a book I have, the original church was at 14th and Market St. It no longer exists, but a commemorative stone is at the site. My last trip to Schuylkill County I took pictures of these churches but dont remember exactly what town I was in......? I want to write on the photos where they are located. I know I was driving along Rt 422 going WEST. We left St Johns at Stouchsburg going west and stopped everywhere we saw a "Steeple" and took pictures. Zions St Johns REEDS Lutheran Church St Johns (Hains) Church- this one we saw a sign and made a right turn and went on top of a hill. Trinity Tulpehocken- I think the road runs parallel to 422, new cemetery and church on one side and "old" cemetery across the road from church. Could someone tell me where these churches are located--town only ? Thank You, Karen Searching: LUCAS,UHRICH,FERRINGER,WEISS,SHUCKER,LAHR,FETTEROLF,HEBERLING

I have since learned how useful the church affiliation can be -- in working with a group of other BINKLEY researchers about settlement in Lancaster County, it has turned out that confusions about family lines can be separated by the churches -- two early immigrants named Johannes BINKLEY could be separated by the fact one was Mennonite (didn't believe in child baptism) and another was having his children and grandchildren baptized in Reformed churches. The lines between Lutheran and Reformed probably are not as clear, since settlers may have been willing to have an infant baptized by whichever preacher happened to be available at the right time. And I suppose that when the Great Awakenings swept through in the 1800s, members of either group might have become Methodist. Anyone else have a comment on this? My grandmother was baptized in the Zion German Lutheran church near Ashland. Does anyone know if the church still exists? If not, where was it located? Any additional information about the church would be welcome. Claudia from MN ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
I have an article from the local newspaper that says that the German Lutheran church on Dutch Hill was formed in 1835 and the log church building was built in 1837. In 1855 they replaced it with a brick building. Dutch Hill is in Tamaqua I can see it from my house. It is a big hill. It was also called the union church. It was used by the German and the Reformed churchs. The way I understnd it they were two versions of the Lutheran church. Some of my husbands family are buried in its cemetery which still exists. I have taken pictures of graves in there. The church split 4 ways but St. John which was the last to go took the brick from the old church and built a new church on the corner of Pine and East Mauch Chunk. They still use the original bell and it is rung every Sunday and can be heard all over town. Glee Krapf ----- Original Message ----- From: "J.S. There are two Lutheran churches Zion and St. John's. They are only a couple of short blocks from each other. Zion is the largest church in town. I live in Tamaqua and have since 1986. I lived in Quakake for two years before that. Quakake is 7 miles down the road. My husband was born and raised here. He was gone from the area for abt 30 years before we retired here. This is a town of abt seven thousand people. I am from Los Angeles. There are two Methodist churches here both are slowly dying. At one time they were in good shape. I used to attend the largest of the Methodist churchs. What kind of records they have or what shape they are in is unknown to me. I doubt that anyone one is there on a dailey basis but you could get lucky and catch someone there cleaning or other chores. 1st United Methodist church on Broad is not listed in the phone book and it used to be the largest of the two. There is also a Primative Methodist church on Hunter Street. It is not a very big church anymore People wise. Primative is a different domination than the United Methodist. Dear Jan, Now you are getting into my childhood . . . Tamaqua RD is where I attended a one room school for 4th, 5th and 6th grades! I believe the Benjamin Brobst you speak of (below) is Benjamin Kistler Brobst of Albany Twp., Berks County, PA . . . just over the Blue Mountain (South of Tamaqua). This Benjamin was baptised in the Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Stoney Run, Albany Twp., Berks Co., Pennsylvania in July 1832 (not Tamaqua but just a half-day buggy ride over the mountain). (Pyle) Robson (1831-1916). Because her headstone has her listed as Elizabeth W. Pyle, wife of William Robson. She was listed in the church sexton records as Elizabeth W. Pyle buried on Jan 2nd 1917. Her headstone simply shows she was born in 1831 and died in 1916. Emma L. Robson is on the headstone with William R. Pyle. And I agree that it is most likely that Phillip, who died in 1875 is Elizabeth's child. Andrew Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
