The best people, hands down, to ask about anything historical pertaining to Mahanoy would be the folks at the Schuylkill County Historical Society, or perhaps they can put you in touch with Shirley Ryan, who is extraordinarily helpful & a very well respected authority on the Mahanoy City area and its origins. The historical society is located in Pottsville, which is also the county seat. The people at both locations are very helpful and friendly. Know what you're looking for before you go. The historical society has various hours so check before you try to go there. They also charge $5/day for research if I remember. There's a parking garage a couple of blocks away. Parking at the courthouse is almost non-existent and you will likely have to park on the street a few blocks away and walk it. From enumerators to transcribers and our ancestors themselves, we need patience and clear thinking to find many of these hidden records. Besides using creative alternate spellings, and so on, I've written the surname I'm searching in several different ways and then squint to see how else a name might appear. One of my surnames I've searched is Sieck from Germany. I never found it the same way twice from one 10 year period to the next. In one instance it was transcribed as Suck: If you write Sieck out without dotting the "i" or looping the "e", it does appear a Suck. Another time it was enumerated as "Ceck"...well, at least I was able to find everyone from 1850-1930, as well as passenger, immigration, & naturalization records for that family. And I'm familiar with going through whole towns page by page. I was just hoping that someone knew which Mahanoy Township District had Coles Village. Thank you for writing and best wishes to you. Perhaps this little conversation can help others too. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I still occasionally have to search a specific enumeration district or even a county page by page myself to find my ancestors/relatives whose names have either been misspelled by the enumerator or the transcriber of those records. Sometimes the original census taker's handwriting was just very hard to read due to poor handwriting or damage to the original records, and sometimes the transcriber wasn't as careful as we'd like. I've seen lots of instances, also, where it's a case of a simple & common spelling mistake or typing error. In any case, a page by page search of a district (although VERY daunting [and tedious] at times if it's a large population) can yield the results you need. It also gives you insight into people of the same surname living within the same area th! at can help you with other family lines down the road. Coles Patch is in East Mahanoy Township...it may be listed simply as Mahanoy or Mahanoy Township. The Patch is located at the West End of Mahanoy City (simply blends into the end of the town). At one time the Patch was located on both the North and South sides of the highway (Rt 45; later Rt 54) and contained approximately 800 families. Today there are about six homes left on the North side of Rt 54. Just a suggestion....broaden your search. The family you are searching for could have moved out of the area completely. Check our the webpage I have on Yahoo for Mahanoy City/Township.... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mahanoycitytownship/ Good Luck, Shirley p.s. There was a Hattie Kelly Walsh from MC...she was a member of St. Canicus Church. Hattie was an elementary school teacher for many years. She died shortly after 2001. S/
