    2. Arlean Fermanis
    3. Hi Barbara, I am descended from Antonius through his son Frederick. It has been a long time since I worked on my Bensinger files but when I checked, I discovered you are right when you say that we do not know the death date for Antonius. I think I had heard about a deed between Antonius and his son Jacob but I had not pursued that. What a great find! I have forwarded your message to some other cousins to see if they had any other information. I hope that your post will bring out more Bensinger descendants. If it has already been 10 years since the Stone Cabin web site has been updated we all need to get back in touch. Thanks for posting, Arlean -----Original Message----- From: paschuyl-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:paschuyl-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Barbara Welch Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2007 1:22 PM To: paschuyl@rootsweb.com Subject: [PASCHUYL] Antonius Bensinger I'm posting this here because it appears that the Bensinger family site at StoneCabin is defunct, not updated since 1997, and the Bensinger surname list isn't active either. For those descended from the first Bensinger to arrive in Pennsylvania, I'd like to share what I recently found. At the Berks County courthouse there's a deed that transferred fifty acres from Jacob Bensinger to Anthony Bentzinger. Anthony paid Jacob 100 pounds lawful money. Jacob is described as the son of Anthony and the land was near Bolsandy (?) Creek, "over the Blue Mountains in Brunswick Township." The land sale was dated August 11, 1777, and on August 21, 1777, Anthony Bentzinger appeared before a Berks County justice of the peace to sign or place his mark. Bensinger descendents claim that Antonius/Anthony was born in 1720 and arrived in 1743. What I haven't been able to find is a date of death. He apparently left no will. At least this deed shows that Antonius was alive in 1777 and might have moved from Richmond Township to Brunswick where his sons owned farms. Another indication that he was alive in 1777 is the oath of allegiance list signed in Berks County on August 12, 1777, includes the name of "Anthon" Bensinger. It appears Antonius never paid taxes on the Brunswick Township land possibly because he died shortly after he purchased it. If anyone has additional information on Antonius or this land transfer, please post it for us Bensinger clan members. 2. Barbara, Berks used to be much bigger and included Schuylkill County prior to 1811 I was at both courthouses a year ago and some kind people at Berks helped me find leads to my colonial family who started in the Schuylkill area... It takes volunteers to get computerization done. It is intenstive work. Kathy in Las Vegas ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. [PASCHUYL] Schuylkill Co. & Berks Co. courthouses
    2. Barbara Welch
    3. I just returned from a visit to Berks County Courthouse where I was researching my German ancestors who arrived in the 1740s and 1750s. What a disappointment to find that Berks Co. does not have records from (or at least that I could find) before the Revolutionary War and records from 1775-1790 were very scarce indeed. Does anyone know why these records (deeds and wills) are missing? I have copies of land transactions from Bucks County dating from the 1680s and here in Virginia they have wills and deeds from the 1620s. A genealogy friend suggested that the earlier Berks Co. records were possibly destroyed in a fire. I did turn up in the Schuylkill Co. courthouse three deeds that were signed in 1781, 1801, and 1810 but were not recorded until 1900! Strange indeed since those years were before Schuylkill was made a county out of old Berks (1811). FYI: the Sch. Co. courthouse has all their deeds computerized so that retrieving and making copies was quite effortless. The Berks Co. employees in the deed office were not familiar with requests for documents from the 1700s although they did finally find one deed from 1777, that was good news, but the bad news was that on the microfilm it is just about illegible and all attempts to copy it came out poorly.
