Hi Karen, Do you know where they were living between 1880 and 1900? I don't see either of them in the 1890 census directory in Hegins Township. There is a Salem Evangelical Cemetery for sure, but I do not know about a church with it. The cemetery is located on the western side of downtown area of Orwigsburg slightly south of Market Street. If you go to map quest and put in Orwigsburg and then zoom in using the aerial view you will see where the cemetery is on S. Franklin Street. I believe I remember a church building across the street from it but I am not sure it was associated with the cemtery, probably was at one time. -----Original Message----- From: paschuyl-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:paschuyl-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, November 03, 2007 9:14 AM To: PASCHUYL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PASCHUYL] Salem Evangelical Church, Orwigsburg This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. That is, is there an older section 'across the highway up on the hill' and a newer section that opened sometime in the late 60s? Are both places under the same name? If not, can someone give me the name of the 'older section'? My husband's grandfather was buried in the new section in 1968. He thinks his great-grandmother was buried "in the old section across the street up on the hill" - sorry, that's all he remembers. Here's who I found: Johannes Schumacher 7/14/1775 - 4/5/1857 Susanna Schumacher (nee Kuntz) 2/15/1779 - 11/17/1856 Daniel Zimmerman 1/16/1812 - 4/6/1854 Maria Zimmerman wife of Daniel, daughter of Johannes Schumacher 6/1/1816 - 6/7/1881 Johannes Zimmerman 2/12/1851 - 2/3/1875 All of the stones are in German. There's no additional genealogical information other than what I've listed. Susanna Schumacher's stone is broken roughly in half, but someone set the pieces back-to-back with the writing facing outward, so it can be read. While I was in the cemetery, I met another researcher who told me she is a long-time member of Zion UCC. I asked her about church records, particularly baptismal, and she said that very little exists because there were two fires at the church. She only knew of the published records that I'd already found in the library in Pottsville. The part of West Penn Twp. surrounding Zion UCC was definitely part of Northampton County before the formation of Schuylkill County. John Shoemaker's 1792 land purchase fits. There's been some discussion of John Shoemaker in the Schumacher Genforum; it seems to be accepted that he was a son of the Rev. Daniel Schumacher. The archives of the Record American newspapers from c 1918 through 1968 are currently in the possession of the Mahanoy City Public Library and are UNAVAILABLE for research until they are microfilmed. The Library has undertaken the project to get the archives digitalized and the first batch of volumes are being worked on....the earliest and the ones in the worse condition. If you would care to contribute to the project, make your check payable to the Mahanoy City Public Library, Newspaper Project and mail it to - Mahanoy City Public Library, 17-19 W Mahanoy Ave, Mahanoy City, Pa, 17948. Hello Fellow Researchers, I'm wondering if anyone on the list would be viewing any of the Shenandoah Herald Microfilms in the near future. I have a date of death for an ancestor and I'm wondering if the papers around that date could be checked for an obituary. I'm not able to get to PA for awhile and I forgot that I had this date. I'm hoping if there is an obit it will provide some clues to advance my research. If anyone is willing, please contact me off the list at: _EDelva7334@aol.com_ (mailto:EDelva7334@aol.com) I am willing to reimburse any expenses Thanks, Elizabeth ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

It is entirely possible that these 2 families intermarried. I have been trying to make sense of the census material from 1790 to 1840. Due to the changes in county names, I'm not sure what corresponded to West Penn prior to 1810. The 1810 census for West Penn records John Shoemaker (married, with 5 sons and 1 daughter), John Zimmerman (married, with 2 sons and 2 daughters), Paul Zimmerman (1 male&female 45 ,1 male 26-44, 1 male/2 females 16-25, 1 male 10-15), Jacob Zimmerman (married, 4 sons, 3 daughters). I also found a land purchase for John Shoemaker on 8/30/1792 in Northampton, PA. So far, I have not come across any Zimmerman purchases. The only other bit of information I have about Mary Isabella (daughter of Cordilla Zimmerman) is that she was very short. My mother said they were all taller than she by the time they were 10 years old. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
