I've just found info saying my great-grandfather's brother, William Henry Young was buried there with no tombstone. I'd like to at least visit the cemetery and if possible find the records to look at. Also, is Dowdentown located on Dowdentown Road on the way to Minersville? Thanks for any help! (Yes) > > I did not not have much luck with church records in St. Clair. At one time there were at least 17 churches. > (and twice as many taverns!!) Not sure if the records for those closed churches went to Allentown diocese or where) From my husband's experience with his grandparents church in Port Carbon, you must "Grease the palm of the priest" very well to get information" and then they follow up with a request for an additional donation if they should find any records. The only one he had much help from was the german catholic church in pottsville, those people helped him find the records and were tremendously kind, but he had to go to the church. Writing doesn't seem to work. No one I know personally had much luck if they write. But then there are many churches I write to for "directional assistance" and never hear from --Bermuda triangle of churches, everything goes in a deep hole never to be heard from again. :) The ministers either ignore or bend over backwards to help! One exception, the minister in Williamstown, at the church adjacent to the cemetery where John Hain is buried (I thought the cem. belonged to that church) explained and apologized that his church was not the owner of the cem, then sent me all the Bixler's and Hain's listed in the telephone book! Not too many like him! He said the present day store that is up the street from his church was where Seybert's Church was and to his knowledge the past records were lost or burned. Many of the older catholic records are written in Latin or Galic or something so the given names are even hard to recognize. Gugliome for William etc. > Have seen the name Hoy but not Bummerbach. (Me neither I have the book for Friedensburg St John's church but it had no marriages it does have Salome's bapt. + parents do you have book? are you sure it is not Bergenbach?? p. 99: Hoy aka Heu / HAAY Johann Bergenbach (aka Borgenbach/ Borkenbach/ Birkelbach)and wife Barbara were sponsors for a Hoy child. That is another name that will drive you crazzzzyyyy!!!! In the very early days it was not the minister's duty to marry couples in many churches, his main job was to baptize children in gods name.Because of the lack of available ministers, I presume. It was later when more churches were established that marriages were performed by the minister, I've been told)> Sounds like fun with your grandson!!!!
