I believe my great-great-great-grandmother's maiden name was McGugart, and that she died in Schuylkill Haven. Mary McGugart married a John Kehoe and had my great-grandfather, Thomas Kehoe. I don't know anything beyond that, and can't even verify that she is Thomas' mother. Any information you have about the McGugarts in Schuylkill Haven would be greatly appreciated... Thank you! My ancestor is Jacob Fisher who may been an early schoolmaster. His wife was Elizabeth. He had a son named Jacob who married Catherine Filbert, and had a family of seven sons and one daughter. Two of his sons were named Jacob and Daniel. Daniel was born in 1820, and married Lydia Spankuchen of Pine Grove in 1845. Daniel moved to Pottsville, and then on to Mahanoy City. He died in 1905. Jacob lived in Fountain Springs and Ashland, and died about 1907. I hope to find more information about any of these families. I am not sure there is a connection as I believe he died between 1860 and 1870 because by 1870 his wife was widowed. It is very difficult to find info on him because not only is the last name so common, the first names seem to repeat a lot in the families. Good luck, still trying to find out where he was from. Monday December 13,2010 DAYS GONE BY 100 years ago -1910 Mrs.Elizabeth Hirst,Gilmore or Lutz, of Pottsville, not only lost her suit for $50,000 damages, which was tried in Pittsburg, but got herself in a peck of trouble that may result in her serving a term for bigamy. It was shown by witnesses that the woman not only had three husbands, but that she had two of them in jail at one time, one for nonsupport and the other for larceny. Husband Lutz and husband Gilmore were present at the hearing prepared to testify, while husband Hirst, who is supposed to be the original one, wrote from Calfornia, expressing a desire to come and testify against his wife if the case was delayed a few weeks. Here is a link to the archives: http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/state_archives/2887 Enter "Schuylkill Almshouse" in the "Search Archives Finding Aids" box and a number of records appear. I do not believe any of these records are online. You may go in person to search or hire a researcher. Note that the Archives will be closed until next year. Some history of the Schuykill Almshouse is in this document: http://www.usgwarchives.org/pa/schuylkill/pdf/munsell.pdf I just entered "alms" in the search field.
