July 21, 1924 in Reading aged 81 yrs 1 mo 2 days). Henry married first to Sarah M. Renninger and lived in Oley. A son George R. born in Oley on Jan. 11, 1866. George R. became the Rev. George R. taught school in Oley for 21 years and was pastor of Evangelical and Congregational churches for 41 years. He died in Sept. 1948, leaving sons Henry S. of Dunellen, NJ, Herbst S. Dellecker of Frackville, PA, and daughters Mrs. Allan E. Miller of Allentown, and Mrs. George Lewis of Flourtown. Sarah died on June 24, 1868 at the age of was 30 years 8 months and 11 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Boyertown. A baby girl was born who died when Sarah died according to a personal letter of George R. Dellecker written July 29, 1942. Henry married second on Mar 20, 1869 to Violetta (Maurer) Herbst (b. 12-31-1828 d. 3-18-1902) widow of Captain George Herbst. Violetta was the daughter of Henry and Susan (Dotterer) Maurer. Viol! etta and Captain Herbst had one child, George Edwin Herbst (b. 9-10-1857 d. 2-1919). I have no actual documentation on Henry S. Dellicker, other than what is found in the following letter, shared by Bob Dellicker in 2001. I do not have a current address for Bob. The internet company he used in 2001 is no longer in business at that address. A transcript of the 1942 letter follows. Birdsboro, Pa., July 29, 1942 Mr. Frederick E. Dellicker Dear Friend, Your intensely interesting letter and information were delivered at 11:30 a.m. Thanks! I have read all of it twice already. I have a book that would prove interesting to you, but my son Herbst of 14 S. Third St., Frackville, Pa., has it just now. He is assistant postmaster there for some years. Herbst may seem strange to you as a Christian name. I had a step brother--Dr. Edwin M. Herbst and he was named Herbst in honor of him. Dr. Herbst was an excellent doctor, but he preferred politics. He was Senator for sixteen years, or until he was disabled by a stroke. He died on Feb. 17, 1919 in Oley, Pa., aged 61 yrs. 5 mo. and 7 days. I have no brothers, but a baby girl was born when my mother and the baby died. Mother was 30-8-11. She died on June 24, 1868 and I was born on Jan. 11, 1866. My father died on July 21, 1924 in Reading aged 81 yrs 1 mo 2 days. He lived on Mulberry St. and I at 520 Oley St. Reading when he died. I preached in Grace Church, Reading at Sixth & Elm Sts. at that time but moved to Bethlehem the following May to preach in Emmanuel Evangelical Congregational Church, whe! re I had the most largely attended Sunday School in Northampton County. Our average attendance was 515 and we had only 650 church members. At present there are 750 church members, but only 421 average attendance in Sunday School. In your report you mention the name of the wife of Rev. Frederick Dellicker's son Frederick, a Miss Beitamann. I have her photograph, given to me by my aunt, my father's only sister. My father had one sister and one brother. All three are dead. The sister was Mrs. Mary Rhoads aged 72-9-11. His brother was George Washington Dellicker aged 84-11-3. My father and me are the only ones to spell the name with an e. I don't know why my father spelled it Dellecker. His brother and all the Dellickers that I know besides my family spell it Dellicker. My uncle George had a large family. They lived at Boyertown. My father and mother were raised directly east of Boyertown, very near Falkner Swamp or New Hanover where my great great grandfather and his first wife and Frederick and his son and wife are buried within a few feet of the southeast corner of the church. The chief window in the church is in honor of Rev. Frederick Dellicker. My father helped to pay for it when they r! emodeled the church years ago. The church is out in the country and is the oldest church of the Reformed Church in the United States. The denomination is now called The Evangelical and Reformed Church. Two denominations united about eight or ten years ago. Your New Jersey Reformed Church, I think is what is called the Dutch Reformed Church or the Reformed Church in America. When Bertha wrote that Rev. Frederick Dellicker was her great grandfather and I knew that he was my great great grandfather, I could hardly understand it. But since you explained about the second marriage and the grandfather being born posthumously I can now understand it. This is my family tree: Rev. Frederick Dellicker Frederick Dellicker Samuel Dellicker Henry S. Dellecker George R. Dellecker Falkner Swamp or New Hanover is several miles south of Boyertown and possibly four or five east of Pottstown. It is in Montgomery County and Boyertown is in Berks County on the boundary. The Reformed Church is a two story brick building and the Lutheran Church about three blocks away is a stone building. My mother's forefathers were members of this Lutheran Church and some Renningers are now leading members. Speaking about religious denominations, there is practically no difference between the faith of the Reformed and the Presbyterian Churches. Our denomination also teaches practically the same doctrines. I preached in Philadelphia ten years and my personal opinion is that the Presbyterians of that great city are doing more real Christian work than any of the other denominations. For some years I was a regular attendant of their Ministerial meetings Monday after Monday. I enjoyed their discussions and the papers that were read. Strange as it may seem to you , never! theless, this is true-- My father's brother George was a Lutheran, his sister Mary was a Methodist and my father was loyal to the church of his great grand father, he was a loyal and somewhat bigoted member of the Reformed Church. I never united with my father's church although he was a prominent member of our local church. To prove it is easy. When they tore down the old church and built their most beautiful new one, my father was selected to superintend the whole affair. There were no contractors. He had to supervise and manage everything. He was able to do it well and they have a large and imposing church edifice. Your letter will be filed and I intend to write about some matters in the future. Time will not permit more at this moment. Thanks again for the letter and the records! My oldest son lives at Middlesex, New Jersey. His post office address is Bound Brook Road, Dunellen, N.J. He is a member of the Middlesex School Board and works in a Steel Mill. He has one daughter and four Sons. James is leaving from their home today for Fort Dix. He is a Chemist. His elder brother Ray may also soon leave for service. He and the eldest one George work in a publishing house in Dunellen and William aged 18 years graduated in the Bound Brook High School in June and is employed by Johns Manville. My son's name is Henry. The son living here is Frederick S. and his wife's name is Dorothy Jane. She was born and reared in Philadelphia and is of Scotch parentage--McNeil. Hope that you are well and happy. Write again. Yours truly, George R. Dellecker Betty Burdan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
